I had Trading Places quite high, love that film.

Big is the first 'ah shit, forgot about that one' for me.

I'm not sure I get your ranking Craig. You put 2 films on joint 51st then say the next film is placed 52nd. Surely if two films are tied at 51st then the following one is at 53rd...

Curzon Ashton....and Carlisle
They are remaking Highlander again with Ryan fucking Philippe this time in the lead role! I loved Highlander and Highlander II (if you take the second one as a film in its own right and ignore the first film). Used to watch the telly series as well.

That Belly Of An Architect looks decent, Brian bloody Dennehy in it though, he's like a Yank Jim Broadbent, everywhere around that time, and acts the same all the time, though he's a better actor the the dreadfully overrated Broadbent.

I've got sick of f*cking remakes.......far too many at the moment by a clearly lazy movie industry at present.

worst one yet is they are remaking Ben-Hur.......you know the 2nd or 3rd most awarded film in the history of filmmaking and one of the best well known films of all time....................why the hell does a film like that need a remake???

I voted Empire of the sun, its not as such a film I'd watch a lot but I find it one of the most beautifully done films

Maybe because producers are bored and lacking inspiration.

Joint 53rd - 22 points on 2 lists.
Tenebrae (1982) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084777/?ref_=nv_sr_3

Argento's last great film and probably my favourite of all of his, if I had to choose. Another dying breath of Italian genre cinema too, although Argento had long since left that economic orbit. More cinematic Rome also, in EUR again, full of airports, hotel lobbies, modern houses, modern art and such, the transnational, the (allegedly) dehumanising and antiseptic. Makes a great dialectical double bill with Deep Red.

Another auteur who did (some of) his best stuff during the decade. 2 or 3 I could've gone for, but again, this is my absolute fave of his, I reckon. Melding his comedy with his weightier Bergman-y inclinations, a novelistic interweaving of tales pondering all manner of soul bearing Big Issues (not the magazine). Blackly pessimistic but possessing a surprising levity. This feels like the movie he was working towards all his career, to me. He returned to similar themes with the befuddlingly overpraised Match Point, which is about 10% as balanced, focussed or assured.

Exactly. I don't watch any remakes at all whether they be of classic or of foreign films. Ben Hur is another stupid film to remake; no one is interested in that sort of stuff now and it won't make much of a profit I predict due to that lack of interest and what will be gargantuan production costs. The original is sensationally good; I watched it again while flicking over the other month and even though it goes on for 3 and a half hours, its never dull, even the family segments. Why don't they just re-release that? It'd be cheaper and still do pretty well.

I like Empire Of The Sun too, and went to the pictures with my old man to watch it (as I did with Gandhi that will no doubt feature here or already has). I like the progression of Bale's character, from an arrogant selfish schoolboy, to someone who show's humanity and grows up with what happens to him during the war. Its not one of Speilberg's absolute masterpieces, but it's still a fine film.

Just remembered a film I should have had in my list, The Last Emperor - I wonder if that will make an appearance.

Damn, I forgot about The Karate Kid, would have def made my list if I'd thought of it. Legend as well, that might have too.

Yeah, that's probably fair enough. That's the second of mine to go out... I still love it because it's Ghostbusters, but it's so much worse than the first one.

I think GB 2 is a really strong sequel and maybe a bit underrated. It makes me laugh a lot. Not as good as the original but I like it a lot. Only thing that might have made it better is if the formula wasn't so similar to the first. i.e. in the first one they start out not in the Ghostbusting business, then they get into it. In the second one they are out of business at the start and get back into it. So maybe rather than another origins style story it would have been better to see the next stage so to speak. But they could have been saving that for part 3....which never happened :(

Cool, two other people put Honey I Shrunk the Kids. Another that I watched to death as a kid. I even liked Honey I Blew Up the Kid and Honey we Shrunk Ourselves for fucks sake. And the TV show that was on the Disney Channel!

Also, Commando is another of those films I've never seen where everybody goes "how the fuck have you never seen that?!". I should check it out one day.

On the subject of films on the list we haven't seen I was flicking through the channels last night and Some Kind of Wonderful was showing on one of the Sky movie channels, gotta say I quite enjoyed it. Mary Stuart Masterson is much prettier than Lea Thompson too, imho.

How did Lethal weapon only make 3 lists? Abolish yourselves. Wish I'd seen this before the deadline. Best films of the 90's next Craig?

I imagine the member base on here would find it harder to select a top 90's list than they have a top 80's list.

A full days worth of decent selection discussion lost?

Speaking of what's on and that, the Tom Hanks collection on sky doesn't include any of his 80's classics.

Yeah, bit of a fucker that. Me,Carel and Salty had quite the discussion about the merits of Italian Giallo films, I was hoping some of you would pick up on and give the films mentioned a watch. CBA to go through it all again now though.

Was very close to making my top 20, I chose another Molly Ringwold film though, which featured very highly on my list

What I will mention again, is that I can't believe I forgot totally about Young Guns, and it was too late to change things when I realised. That would definitely have made my top 20.
Oh, and I was talking about a David Lynch masterpiece , his seminal piece of 80's film making (Not Dune or The Elephant Man)and how glad I was that it hasn't come out yet. So someone else other than me must rate it very highly. Can't wait to find out who's list it was on.

On the topic of Lynch, Series 3 of the greatest TV Show ever made comes to our screens next year, exactly 25 years after the second, just as he promised....

Twin Peaks. I am so fucking excited for this.

Fish called Wanda and Princess Bride were both on mine, just in the 10-20 group....love both films.

it should be inconceivable that Princess Bride only got 2 votes.

I had Phenomena on my list, but cant remember if it made my top 20 or not, think I just cut it. None of the other Argento ones Ive seen were 80s.
