Wasn’t going to watch, but decided to have a look despite fearing the worst. Exactly as I had expected I'm afraid. Utter drivel, scripted banter, the same old boring format and Evans is an odious c*nt. If it keeps up like this I won't be watching for very much longer, that's for sure.

Watching that was like turning up to see, say, Dread Zepplin, Noasis or the Bootleg Beatles and having them open by saying ''we'll mainly be playing new songs tonight''.

Awful. And Evans clearly is a MASSIVE EVANS.

Controversial...

but I liked it.

Thought it was a good mix for a car programme. Wasn't quite as dull as Fifth Gear or something, but it was a bit more informative in certain sections which I liked, and I thought it was funny in places without being over the top. Evans is a bit shouty, but people who have ever seen/heard him do anything will know that. Thought Le Blanc was a decent co-host too.

Think I'm in the minority though. There are huge amounts of people who wouldn't have liked it whatever happened to be honest, cos its not Clarkson and co.

EDIT: For example, every second tweet about it tonight mentions Clarkson, showing how many of the viewers centered their own enjoyment upon him. The beeb was fighting a losing battle, it'll get less viewers but I don't think its a bad programme.

In the interests of balance, every second tweet that is in favour of the new Top Gear is because ''that...racist/violent/xenophobic/middle-Britain hounding/producer punching/arrogant/double denim*...knob Clarkson isn't on it (*delete as applicable)''.

Which smacks of something very different to enjoying that show.

Sorry. Wrong. The show has been an embarrassment for quite some time now, but this was a new low. I said all along it was going to be an unwatchable mess, and I was proven correct almost immediately, when they wheeled out those Indians to be 'PC'. Sigh.

Fair enough if that's what you saw, I think its best to analyse the programme on what was there, rather than what wasn't. I tried to look at it without the influence of Clarkson and co.

What, the ten second clip in the first couple of minutes of an hour long show?

Unfortunately, I think the 'its going to be shit' and 'its going to be PC' arguments have been peddled so much for the last six months that people were looking for stuff.

What I saw on Twitter, I meant, not on the show.

I thought it was alright as a first attempt, although there's plenty to work at. LeBlanc was better than I thought he'd be as well.

Not watched it yet but the BBC will not be able to win, without Clarkson it's just not Top Gear.

I'm another one that thought it was certainly watchable. Definitely not awful, just different. To be fair, Top Gear with the old trio was only ever good to watch when it was a 'special' episode. Truth is, not that many people watch it for car information, so the presenters have to be interesting. As it goes, I like both Le Blanc and Evans, and they seemed to have decent co-presenter chemistry. But as has already been said, it was never going to be good enough for some people, regardless of what they did.

Someone having fun in this thread at my expense I see. My money's on Smat the bearded scoundrel.

Anyway, I enjoyed it and reckon it will get better. Looks to be a big improvement on what the last incarnation became in the last 4-5 years.

personally i thought it was absolutely watchable but not laugh out loud like some of the old jezza / hamster / may era. will be watching again. Le Blanc is actually a good driver too which surprised me. had he done star in a reasonably priced car?

I'm not a massive Top Gear fan but I am currently watching the new episode. I don't really understand the hatred, it's not that different from how it used to be and presumably the new presenters will grow into the role. Chris Evans is the loud obnoxious one (Jeremy Clarkson), Matt LeBlanc is the likeable one (James May) and no one ever needed Richard Hammond anyway.

I tried to watch it and it just doesn't seem like it is for me.

I love driving but give pretty much 0 shits about cars and motoring. The things that got me so in love with the show was the banter, humour and wacky shit they did week in week out. I'd typically fast forward through the more serious review segments and the reasonably priced car and get straight to the race across countries or sheds on wheels. Liked the news segments as well as they were just a good laugh.

New show just doesn't have this fun feel. What made Top Gear so successful was that it appealed to wide audiences. It appealed to car people, it appealed to people coming for the humour, it appealed to those wanting to see cool shit, it appealed to those who wanted to see celebrities etc...

I agree with this. Helps that I wasn't crazy about the previous incarnation though. I didn't watch it every week before and doubt I will this series either, but it wasn't as bad as some of the stuff I'd read about it prior imo.

The other thing that shouldn't be forgotten is that it's the first episode. If we judged the previous incarnation of Top Gear on selected episodes it could comfortably be listed as one of the worst shows ever to appear on television. Let's wait and see how Evans and LeBlanc get on throughout the series, rather than just the first 60 minutes.

Yep, I'm surprised how seriously mad people have been over it (mainly on Twitter, admittedly). It was pretty much exactly the same, down to the structure of the scripts, just with different faces.

The worst thing about it was Evans has missed an opportunity to change/refresh it.
