Having seen the highlights, I will admit there was no punch thrown so in hindsight maybe the second yellow was ample punishment. However, I stand by the fact that if the referee had control of the game from minute one then that 'melee' doesn't happen at the end. It was clear a lot of our players were very frustrated by the officials and I would imagine yours were too but just handled it better.
Fair play to Carlisle though - it's not their job to referee themselves and Curle came right out in the buildup and told everyone what he was going to do. He did it and it worked. We deserved to get beat on the day, we move on to Newport tomorrow night who will no doubt record their first win after 4 straight defeats.

Yeah, the referee ran right in there when the first push happened, and then just got surrounded by melee... very bizarre, but the referee we had against Mansfield in our last game was similarly bad.

According to one of the fans on a Tranmere forum I just read, the referee then forgot he had initially given a foul against Tranmere before it all kicked off, and awarded Tranmere a throw-in only for the linesman to remind him he had already indicated for a Carlisle free kick. His arse must have went.

Highlight up

Wyke took both his goals well.

On the sending off at the end, Asamoah is show pointing towards Rory Donnelly, I believe that Donnelly had kicked the ball at him although this is just what I've read, the highlights don't show what Donnelly did to get the Carlisle players confronting him. CMW squares up to Donnelly and Donnelly pushes him away, Dempsey then steps up and pushes Donnelly back, albeit with a bit more force. The referee then books CMW, Donnelly and Dempsey for their parts in what was really just a bit of handbags. I think it would have been a bit harsh had the ref given Dempsey a straight red.

In fact the referee is already reaching for his pocket before CMW squares up to Donnelly, so is presumably already planning on booking Donnelly for his actions, therefore if he was acting with any consistency (in that he considered CMW squaring up to be a bookable offence) surely Donnelly should have been booked twice... one for the incident the referee was already planning on booking him for and then a second time for pushing CMW.

I only bring this up because there seems to be a lot of injustice felt among the Tranmere fans that Dempsey won't miss as many games as if he'd had a straight red... maybe we should just accept we all live in glass houses and put the stones away.
The full incident is on the highlights on player.

In the lead up to the incident Donnelly kicked the ball away in frustration and was rightly booked so I suppose it does seem strange that he wasn't also sent off for a similar push to the one from Dempsey, although maybe Dempsey's was with slightly more force. As 1884 Belmont said though, if the ref had control of the game from the outset incidents such as this probably wouldn't happen.
