Hadn't even seen the rumours that we'd bid for Cathcart but they've already been rebuffe.

Will you lose many players back to the cash cow league or will Rafa keep most of them? You should absolutely piss the Championship to be fair.

According to Rafa's most recent interview we have no plans to sell any players. The only one we had no choice with was Townsend due to the well publicised clause in his contract. He's basically told Wijnaldum and Sissoko that unless the Club receives any daft offers (20M+) then they won't be accepted.

With this in mind we've still released three CB's in the last 12 months in Williamson, Taylor and Coloccini so I think it'll be more about strengthening for this division as opposed to starting again. We've already made, in my opinion, smart signings in Gayle and Ritchie who know the league so hopefully it'll just be a good few defenders in and I'll be happy.

Think we gave you some money for Williamson, not much mind.

I'd rather we got rid of Sissoko though, I've got no time for him whatsoever. He only turns up when the cameras are on - as seen with his recent performances at the Euros!

Aye you did sorry. I just meant in the wider term of not longer being with us. How was he for you? Was as mobile as a tree by the time we got shot of him.

Completely agree. If we were to recoup said crazy bid I'd snap their hands off. He's a waste of space unless we're playing Chelsea and can imagine he'd lose interest in the Championship within a couple of games without a win. I think Rafa manged him perfectly last year by making him captain though. It utterly played to his ego and inflated importance and it showed in his last few performances.

Gayle and Ritchie are great signings for the Championship, but it seems like an awful lot of money for two players Newcastle would want to move on in 1-2 years time. Plus now they have such high wages who would be able to afford to take them off us?

Thought it would be better to try to sign up people like Will Hughes, Cook & Taylor from Leeds, etc. Promise them first team football in a league they are familiar with, and in all likelihood they'd be playing regularly next year in the PL for a very good team.

Regarding Gayle as well, would have much preferred to see Perez Mitrovic and Armstrong given the majority of the minutes up front

Yeah I can see that. I think it's more just overkill more than anything. If we want a player, just damn well sign them, get promoted and worry about it later. I am confident we will go up at the first time of asking with what has been said by Rafa and co. and I just don't think Ashley wants to risk that not happening.

I'm fairly confident Armstrong will be going out on loan again as although he had a stormer in his first 6 months with Coventry, he plateaued a bit over the second half of the year and there's still a jump up to the Championship. Rumoured to be 20 odd FL clubs interested, Championship included.

Ignoring Mitro's suspension, I think we'll line up with him and Gayle upfront with Perez/Ritchie/Sissoko out wide.

P.S. We're on the verge of signing Jesus Gamez from Atletico. He's had his Wikipedia changed and everything.

Since we bought him from you permanently in January he has been injured and not played a game

He was decent enough when we had him on loan before though. We lacked any sort of experience in defence when Stearman left, so he came in and led the line well.

The problem for us is he didn't know what kind of player he was. Flirted with being a ball playing defender and a no nonsense clearer of the ball.

Played his part in a good 2 years for us between 09-11 but he needed to be handheld by Coloccini at all times. Saying that though, he played his best stuff for us in the second tier so I can imagine he'll be OK for you in the long run.

It makes perfect sense to loan Armstrong out to a middle to lower Championship team.
If he has a good season and scores a few against some of your top of the table rival teams, it would certainly not do your prospects any harm.
Can you put a good word in? :bg:

Are Newcastle putting together the strongest ever Championship squad? It's ridiculously powerful at this level IMHO. Anyone taking points off them this season will have done well.

Ha! Aye I think he will be off to a fellow Championship team for next season - it'll do him the world of good and he'll probably have a recall option in case Mitrovic goes bat sh** mental again. As you say it makes sense considering the options we'll have.

IF, and it is a big if, we don't lose any big players (Sissoko/Wijnaldum) then I wouldn't disagree with you. The players that we've added and will soon add will hopefully compliment it too. I am confident but as everyone says it is a massively hard division to do well in. As mentioned we're on the verge of signing Jesus Gamez (made 24 apps for Atletico last season) so the defensive cover is already coming in like.

It's a hugely talented squad Haillay7 but that will bring its own problems. Everyone, and I mean everyone, will be out to take something of you next season. I'm just pleased we get to have a go at it relatively early as I can't see past you for the title and when you settle, you're gonna take some stopping IMO. When you think if Rafa had another couple of games you would have probably stayed up, that's what we're facing and it's quite intimidating tbh.
Keeping Rafa is a huge bonus for you, unexpected but refreshing to see.

Oh no I completely agree. Maybe to a lesser extent but it was the same last time whereby it was still a shock as we hadn't been down to this level in 20 (ish) years. Yeah I think we will be targeted early on for results and I have no doubt that's why we're away on TV on the first game. I just hope our home form is as good as last time as we didn't lose a single game all season, drawing 5, winning th rest. (yes I did just google the stats).

If they hold onto everyone, I definitely think so. Would be amazed if they didn't smash Reading's point total.

Your fans seemed to embrace it last time and many said they actually enjoyed the year out of the Prem. Is it the same feeling this season? I appreciate promotion is demanded but you lot were great fun when you were last here, home and away.
Personally, I'm looking forward to another pre match piss up in Sam Jacks, that was a right laugh!

We were so close last time on 102, maybe...just maybe. In all seriousness, it's a much better league this year compared with 09/10.

Yeah it really was - it was actually my first year at University in Manchester at the time so I got to quite a lot of away days that year in and around the NW which was fantastic. I'd say due to the circumstances that positive feeling remains the same what with Rafa staying and the squad (thus far) remaining largely untouched.

I think as a fan base we're used to a lot of sh**e with Ashley (I know it's all relative and it could always be worse, I get it) . Rebranding of Stadium for a while, Wonga, Joe Kinnear etc, so being in the Championship and not losing every single week like we do is quite refreshing.

BUT, ask me in 12 months when we've missed out on the playoffs or something then that'll disappear in a flash ha!

Just read that Wednesday have had a £13M bid accepted for Ross McCormack. Any truth in it? That's a big fee for a player of his age WTGR.

Hope so. I want to nullify Fulham as a threat entirely when we play them first game. First Dembele...

We signed Kenneth Zohore earlier, if we don't piss the league next season I'm off to support Newport County!

Weaker league than 09/10, well at least the last few seasons have been. Can never predict much about the quality of a forthcoming season by July.

I would also be surprised if Newcastle didn't beat our points record, we've held the record longer than the previous record holding clubs did. It has to go soon. Though our whole squad that season cost about a quarter of the price of what Dwight Gayle has cost them..

Apparently we're favourites to sign Ola John on loan from Benfica.

I'll take it, he wasn't great last season, but with a bit of work on fitness there is a very good Championship player in there. I was massively put off by the transfer fee Benfica were demanding, but a cheap loan is good for me. Meets our transfer requirement of being Dutch too.
