The form table shows FGR at its base, the first time in well over a decade that they have been in that position. And with no game on Tuesday they will remain there until at least Saturday evening.
However despite losing five of the last six games FGR remain in the play-offs!!

Similarly same with Tranmere, 4th in table but 19th in current form.
But should results go against these two teams on Tuesday, FGR will drop out of play-offs but not Tranmere.

Cheltenham are top of table, having deposed of Cambridge on Saturday, but Cambridge have the better current form. What a bizarre season this is becoming.

Grimsby and Southend have equal current form, just below mid-table, but Colchester are clearly floundering. Possibly by last game of season it could be two out of those three dropping into the National League.

Congratulations to Port Vale with six straight wins to top the current form table. Yes there is only an outside chance they might slip into play-offs, but it bodes well for them next season.

There’s so many opportunities for dropped points this week, it’s glorious. I’m hoping Salford won’t relinquish their unbeaten home record against Bolton, Walsall will take points off another promotion side and Scunthorpe can do us another favour. If Barrow fancy chipping in too and Newport/Carlisle could end in a draw then it would be an amazing Tuesday.

Edit: I’m so much more optimistic about our promotion chances when we’re not playing....

To put it simply - IF we beat Exeter then it's 2 from Southend, Colchester and Grimsby for the drop;-
Grimsby would need 13 points from 6 games and Southend 10 from 5 just to get to 47 points

This is one of our games in hand, so a total free hit. A point would be lovely.

You're safe already. We're not getting 7 points on you in 5 games.

your best hope for survival is us mathematically being safe before we play you.... IF Walsall stop Colchester winning and you then beat Colchester and then they lose their last 3 (very hard looking) games a victory against us would keep you up*.

* assuming Grimsby don't get 9+ points from 6 games

Our form over the last three games has been patchy at best, So Salford away wouldn't be my first choice opposition. We are new to this league but one thing i know for sure is that no team are that much better than anyone else and any team can get a result on a given day.

So how the hell have Salford remained unbeaten at home this season? fair play to them a great stat, however law of averages say they will get beaten, we are better away even after the Newport defeat a game we should have won comfortably so just maybe its a day of reckoning this Tuesday evening . And 3 points to the Trotters .

Wasn't their optimism for this season based on them finishing last season as the form team?

Partly, as well as keeping pretty much the whole squad together it wasn't an unreasonable aspiration based on that I would say even if some went a bit overboard about it.

It could be argued though even in that run of form last season we did throw a lot of points away from winning positions through poor game management etc which we took into this season so maybe the signs were there already.

We are struggling for goals and drawing far too many matches, so Walsall are hardly the ideal opponents for us. The draw specialists of the division, that don't concede very often.

If the game follows the pattern of recent matches, we will have 68% possession, twenty efforts off target, and fail to score. Hopefully our luck will finally turn on Tuesday night.

It is the last chance saloon now for our automatic promotion hopes. If we fail to win, we could be four or five points adrift by 9 pm, a gap I don't think we could bridge in our current form. Our play off place is obviously also far from secure.

Largely agree with RLC above. Walsall also turned in one of the most impressive showings from a visiting side to PP this season, though a lot has changed since then. Need to re-discover some scoring form and I'd like to see one of the young strikers, Jake Burton, as an option on the bench.

Away to Harrogate who've not won in 6 games. We simply have to win or our season will be all but over.

We look hard to break down, but we've lost our creative touch and have done mainly for the whole of the second half of the season. The injuries we've picked up in attacking/striker areas haven't helped us, meaning we can only really play one way in a set formation.

Their pitch is awful... Newport levels.

Not that they use it as they launch it, so stand up to that you'd be looking to win that one, Stevenage under Westley levels of bombardment.

Marcus Maddison’s loan spell has been ended early. Looks like he’s been struggling with his mental health behind the scenes. Clearly talented but just not the right fit for us. We didn’t see the best of him.

I’d take a point now to be honest but we have some huge games coming up. 3 would be incredible. I think we need to get a cushion on Tranmere because we have the harder run in and they will be a much better team if they can get Vaughan back. Although I think we will be when Sarcevic comes back too.

Nobody back fit but yet another injury for tomorrow, really are down to the bare bones.

Just hoping the team work as hard as they did on saturday, we've always got a chance of getting a point when they fight for everything.

For our friends from cumbria.
Newport County v Carlisle Utd.

Meetings between both clubs since County returned to Football League action in 2013:

2014 / 2015.
Carlisle 2-3 Newport County.
This was the first meeting between both clubs in twenty six years.
County had the advantage at half time with the only goal coming from the head of Yan Klukowski. Ismail Yakubu increased the lead shortly after the break. Brad Pott got one back for the Cumbrians shortly after before sub Shaun Jeffers sealed victory during injury time. Well into injury time, David Amoo reduced the deficit. Jamie Stephen's played the full match in goal for County, his first appearance of the season. After nineteen games each, County were seventh while Carlisle were twenty second.

Newport County 2-1 Carlisle.
What should have been a comfortable victory for County wasn't to be.
Strugglers Carlisle almost finished the first half in front having taken the lead in the eleventh minute from Courtney Melppen-Walter. It wasn't to be as the Cumbrians conceded a penalty just before the break which Adam Chapman converted. Lee Minshull got the games only other goal with a shot from outside the box.
After twenty four games each, County were in fourth position, four points behind leaders Wycombe, while Carlisle were twenty second.

2015 / 2016:
Carlisle 0-1 Newport County.
Having gained just two points from their opening eight league games, victory at last for County in game nine.
The games only goal came from Tyler Blackwood, on loan from QPR, midway through the second half. County remained bottom, a point behind Dagenham & Redbridge and Crawley while Carlisle were mid table. However, this match proved to be manager Terry Butcher's penultimate game in charge as he was sacked after the following games 3-0 loss against Crawley at Rodney Parade.

Newport County 1-0 Carlisle.
The games only goal came from Scott Boden during the earlier stages of the second half.
After John Sheridan's short reign as manager, this was Warren Feeney's fifth game in charge from which County gained ten points.
After twenty nine games, County were now seven points from the drop while Carlisle were mid table after twenty seven games.

2016 / 2017:
Newport County 2-0 Carlisle.
This match kicked off early afternoon as Wales were facing Argentina at the Principality Stadium later afternoon time. Carlisle started this match unbeaten in their first fifteen league games. Josh Sheehan got the first very early on before Rhys Healey got the second around seventy two minutes. This was the second of three successive victories for County, the only positive note of Graham Westley's reign as County manager. County remained bottom while Carlisle remained second.

Carlisle 2-1 Newport County.
This was County's penultimate game of the season, desperate for points to avoid relegation while Carlisle still had a chance of the play-offs.
County had the advantage come half time thanks to a header from Mickey Demetriou on twelve minutes. It was between County and Hartlepool for relegation along with Leyton Orient County had a five points lead over Hartlepool at half time. However, two early second half goals from Jabo Ibehre and Nicky Adams meant that County's feat would be decided after their final game of the season against Notts County. With Hartlepool losing 1-0 at Cheltenham, County had a two point advantage over Hartlepool but an inferior goal difference.

2017 / 2018.
Newport County 3-3 Carlisle.
Shawn McCoulsky put County ahead shortly before the break. Two early goals in the second half from Luke Joyce and Kelvin Etuhu. Matt Dolan leveled the score from a free kick before ex County right back Tom Miller regained the lead for Carlisle. With around twenty two minutes remaining, Matt Dolan scored his second from a free kick. The draw left both clubs around mid table.

Carlisle 1-1 Newport County.
This was the final game of the season for both clubs and Keith Curle's last game of four successive seasons as Carlisle manager.
Mark Ellis put the Cumbrians ahead on fourteen minutes. Padraig Amond scored with around eight minutes of the first half remaining.
County finished the season in eleventh position with sixty four points, one position and three points behind Carlisle.

2018 / 2019:
Carlisle 3-2 Newport County.
County trailed by two goals after only twelve minutes, Jamie Devitt getting both. Padraig Amond reduced the deficit around seven minutes before the break.
Dan Butler leveled the scores with around five minutes to go and it appeared County had earned a point until Danny Grainger scored for the Cumbrians during injury time.
After seventeen games each, County were sixth while Carlisle were eleventh.

Newport County 2-0 Carlisle.
Adebayo Azeez scored his first goal for County after fourteen minutes. Padraig Amond got the second midway through the second half. With both clubs still in reach of the play-offs, County were twelfth with twelve to play while Carlisle were ninth with eleven to play.

2019 / 2020:
Newport County 1-0 Carlisle.
A very poor performance from County, somewhat fortunate to take three points with a screamer of a goal from George Nurse during injury time 90+.

Carlisle 2-0 Newport County.
Both goals came in the first half from Omari Patrick and a penalty by Josh Kayode, conceded by Dale Gorman. Shortly before the break, County had Ryan Inniss sent off after a bad challenge on Josh Kayode.
This game proved to be the final game of the season for both clubs and many others due to covid19 and the final placings were decided on a points per game system.

2020 / 2021:
Carlisle 3-2 Newport County.
Carlisle were by far the better side over the ninety are were worthy winners.
Ryan Haynes conceded a penalty after fifteen minutes of which Lewis Alessandra converted.
Two second half goals from John Mellish put the Cumbrians three up with around ten minutes remaining.
Jamie Devitt, with his first goal for County, reduced the deficit with around seven minutes remaining.
Josh Sheehan scored a second during injury time but it was too late.

Can’t see anything other than a Newport win given our track record there, our performance at Barrow Saturday and our away record this season.

Do you think Ptay11and his alter ego The Baldy One on The Paddock forum might be somebody on here who follows a team who claim they aren't our rivals but continually post on our twitter site. I suspect it might be.
