The Rise and Fall of Football in Yorkshire - Part 1: 19th Century Trailblazers and The Steel City Boys.

It seems hard to believe now but there was once a time when Yorkshire was a respected hub of the beautiful game. With the founding of the worlds first football club in 1857 in the great city of Sheffield began the emergence of Yorkshire football as a staple of the English game. In the 1860's Sheffield FC and rivals such as Hallam FC paved the way for their more widely recognised successors. In a time when football was usually played using set rules from certain areas it was the Sheffield rules which were a heavy influence on the Football Association rules which we now adhere to. In the early years the game was mostly played locally. In 1867 The Wednesday cricket club founded a team to play this new sport that was becoming so popular amongst the working men of England's industrial heartlands, this club was the first of many that would spring up around the old industrial areas of the West Riding in the coming years as the game gained popularity with the masses.

With the introduction of competitive football on a national scale to the English game in 1871 came early domination from clubs such as Wanderers FC, Royal Engineers, Old Etonians and more heartbreakingly a club from across the Pennines in Blackburn. Along with this the clubs from the Midlands were on the rise with the likes of Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion claiming their first FA cup triumphs.

In 1887 came the founding of Barnsley St. Peters who would initially play in the Sheffield and District League.

In 1889 with The Wednesday leaving their first home at Bramall Lane came the founding of the club that would become their eternal rivals in Sheffield United.

In 1888 a new competition was introduced, The Football League. This competition initally pitted twelve teams from the North West and the Midlands against each other with Preston North End winning the first of many titles. The following year in 1889 The Football Alliance was created and in the first season The Wednesday triumphed over the 22 games. This victory was dampened somewhat however as they were trounced 6-1 by Blackburn Rovers in the 1890 FA Cup Final. The following season they finished bottom of the league. The next season they recovered to finish a healthy 4th and then in 1892 the Football League and the Football Alliance merged to create a First and Second Division. With expansion of the First Division from 12 to 16 teams The Wednesday squeezed into the big time finishing 12th in their first season as a top flight club. Across the city their soon to be bitter rivals Sheffield United finished 2nd and earned their place at the top table of English football. The following season United finished two places above The Wednesday in 10th but neither club was troubling the North West and Midland clubs that were coming to dominate the early years of the Football League. Meanwhile in the 2nd Division Rotherham Town finished their first season 14th out of 15.

After an uneventful 1894/95 season for all three clubs came the first success for Yorkshire clubs in the 1896 FA Cup. The Wednesday beat Wolves 2-1 with a brace from Fred Spiksley at Crsytal Palace in London. Neither they or United made any impact in the league though and Rotherham Town were relegated from the Football League when they finished 15th out of 16 clubs. In the 1896/97 season United finished runners-up but never really troubled champions Aston Villa who finished 11 points clear at the end. The following season however they went on to win the First division and becomes Champions 1897/98 while The Wednesday watched on in disbelief from 5th spot. They were unfortunately unable to retain their title in 1898/99 though and only just avoided relegation unlike their cross city rivals who finished bottom of the league and would join Barnsley in the 2nd tier. Barnsley having finished 11th in their first season in the 2nd tier of the football league. It wasn't all doom and gloom though as Sheffield United did win the 1899 FA Cup smashing Derby County 4-1 in the final at Crystal Palace, London. In the last season of the 19th century United bounced back to narrowly lose out on the league title to Aston Villa by just 2 points while The Wednesday made an immediate return to the top flight in a season that saw Barnsley just survive in 16th out of 18 second tier teams.

Holidays will soon be over pal, better get your school bag ready.
Only so many times you can make schoolboy jokes before it gets tedious. Need some new material pal.

Oh fuck of you Lancashire and West Midlands people. This is a Yorkshire thread!!!
Can you blame em? If you lived in Lancs or West mids, wouldn't you be looking on the Yorkshire thread and wishing God had given you the gift of being a Yorkshireman? Its only natural to want the best, bless em, they can't help themselves, poor souls.

Nah, if ever I feel down, I think of Yorkshire and my world feels all rosy again when I think how bad it must be in that hole on the wrong side of the Pennines.

Exactly pal. Point proved. I think of Lancs and feel suicidal. Think before posting next time mate. Good luck next year in both league games against the Blades though mate. Even that dark part of Yorkshire is better is Lancashire.
