If we finished where we are now I would be disappointed. We should be capable of the playoffs with the team we have.

That being said: Notts County and Luton are clearly head and shoulders above everyone else in this category.

Orient and Luton considering the wages they pay

If anything I'd say we're over performing. Off the field we're such an abject circus it's a wonder we've been able to maintain any sort of form on it, high wages or not. Actually, the disparity in wages was half the reason the side fell apart and got relegated last term.

I think us and Luton win this. Pound for pound spent and squad sizes alone tell you what you need to know...

We are both shit, just Luton are shitter than us. All the CMS hype too just adds to it.

Notts will limp over the line, you can see it coming. We really need to sort ourselves out soon or the fans will be so divorced from the team it could be irreparable

Not to rub your noses in it but as an outsider looking in the alarm bells were there for County from the summer. I remember posting a few times that there seemed no strategy or planning behind the signings, IIRC you had barely any defenders going into the season. The foreign signings were always a massive gamble, we did it last season when we had no money but at least most had a background in English football prior to moving abroad.

I've got a mate who I lived with last year who's a Luton fan and he adored Still and would show me these interviews. Personally I always found him to be quite arrogant and drew a resemblance to David Holdsworth with the spiel and wheeler dealer type. I did honestly think it would be their year though, the signings all on paper were a cut above and they had the learning curve of last season. Don't quite know as much about what went wrong as much as with Notts but I think there was the expectation for CMS to just rip it up.

Both are similar in a way with over-populated squads, and there's still time yet for one to make a late run.

We were barely satisfactory tonight - 1 point from relegation threatened Yeovil all season.

All the mystic megs coming out now. I still think the squad was good enough had it been coached and managed right. By and large the crap signings have gone now, couple more to go and it would be alright. We were crying out for a top centre back and we never filled the gap.

I think most Stags fans, in fairness, thought that County would either storm the title or be a hulking foreign mess.

So therefore I don't class them as biggest underachiever, I expected more from the likes of Luton and Cambridge, who spent a few pretty pennies and have had incredibly ordinary seasons thus far.

Nothing to do with Mystic Megs Youpies, just look at the pre-season predictions thread. Sure, a lot had County for the play offs, but there were also quite a few who had you lot down for a mid table finish.

well,from a Luton fan's point of view,
this thread appears right on queue.
no proper hatter fan would have expected this,
fellow posters mocking us and taking the piss.
our failure, yet again,to achieve our fans dreams,
of getting promotion have disappeared it seems.
some players have got to look at themselves and take the blame,
they're just not good enough and the excuses are just lame.
our football is dire and the results don't lie,
we are heading backwards to dark days gone by.
there was a time when watching Luton was a joy to behold,
but the style of play currently leaves me speechless and cold.
we deserve nothing other than the justified mocking,
because, yet again, we are nothing less than shocking.
so please, if there is an award for the biggest underachiever it's got to be us,
we would accept it as the rightful heirs with the minimal of fuss.

"there was a time when watching Luton was a joy to behold" was that when you were winning most of your games in the Conference?

to be fair-that promotional year was a wonderful experience watching luton win more often than not.
however,i'm referring to the years when we won trophys at wembley and held our own amongst the big guns in the old 1st division...but those are things that you, being a northampton fan, would know nothing about?? unless you follow the rugby of course!!

does my head in mowgli....its obvious that the higher you go ...the further you're liable to fall!!
just reminiscing about the good old days helps to keep your mind away from the current bad days!!
winds me up when supporters of teams "with no history" take the mick out of those that do!!
be careful of what you wish for....what goes up...must come down!!
blah blah blah .......

I know what you mean mate, some fans call Wycombe tinpot but how many teams in the lower divisions have been in a FA Cup semi-final (2001 v Liverpool lost 2-1) and the semi-final of The League Cup (2006 lost 5-1 on aggregate to Chelsea)

You know Northampton have had a season in the top flight, right?

We know our place these days don't worry, every club has a history though.
