Good appointment. Expect he will continue his England role. Sky will have to find someone to replace him.

Gary Neville in charge and Phil Neville as assistant, who would have thought it?

Sink or swim time for Neville, very high pressure job at Valencia. Can see him doing a Moyes where his inexperience of the Spanish game ended up with his failure.

It's a bit of a big job to cut his teeth on.

RIP MNF. Get Frank Lampard as his replacement.

I think Neville's probably more cultured in that respect than we think. Moyes had nearly a decade at Everton doing the same job with the same type of player in the same league. As a player himself, he did nothing abroad.

Neville has played in tons of European competitions for club and country. He must have done a fair bit of scouting on different nations for England and having lots of European games for Sky will be far more tuned to the style and what is needed to succeed out there.

Not saying he will but I feel he has every chance of doing well. Certainly if you had to back an Englishman to go out there at the moment and be a success, he'd be at the top of the list I imagine.

If he succeeds then the United or England job surely beckons.

Very surprising. A big leap for Gary, I've always wanted him as our assistant rather than Giggsy.

How can you possibly have an opinion on whether this is a good appointment or not?! He's never managed anyone before!

I should have added the word potentially.

Knows his stuff, talks intelligently and with passion, probably has the contacts required by a big club like Valencia. And great to see an Englishman take a job abroad. I really hope he makes a success of it. For someone who is untried at managerial level, to take your first job in La Liga is a bit of a risk though. The contract is for 5 months so if it goes well everyone wins and if not he will be older and wiser and go running back to Sky.

Sounds like Neville doesn't really want to be a manager long term - maybe finding the role tougher than he thought?

The former England and Manchester United defender Gary Neville is not targeting a long-term career in management and says he is “relaxed” about how long he stays at the helm of Valencia. The England assistant coach made a surprise move to the Spanish club last month to take up his first managerial post until the end of the season, but insists his future lies in other projects.

“I’m not going to say where I want to end up, and it isn’t in management or head coaching, so I want to be clear about that,” Neville, who has been linked as a possible replacement for the under pressure Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal, told Sky Sports. “That’s not my ultimate goal of where I want to be.”

Real are beating Valencia, so he's not gonna get a win again...
