by 2017/18:

A trial of the use of video assistant referees for "game-changing decisions" in football will begin no later than the 2017-18 season.

Technology would only be applied to key incidents concerning goals, red cards, mistaken identities and penalties.

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) says it has had interest in hosting live trials from 12 national associations and one confederation.

Long been debated but maybe will soon be reality..

Good. As long as they sort out a good system of use then it can only better the game. All the crap about goalline tech hindering the game or whatever weak argument there was against it has been put to bed, todays game between Spurs and Arsenal being a great example when Ospina made a save that looked over to the naked eye, ref looks at his watch and play on.... Nay bother.

So do we stop the game whenever there's a debatable incident in the box?

Video technology only works when it's a clear yes/no such as goal line technology and when it doesn't delay the game.

It will end up like rugby where even slightly contentious decisions are reviewed adding an extra 10+ minutes to the game. Presumably no one in the crowd will be told what's going on either making it even more confusing.

"Slightly contentious decisions" are never reviewed in rugby as far as I'm aware. And I think the lines"Goals, red cards, mistaken identities and penalties" is pretty conclusive as to when it'd be brought into use. It doesn't say they'll be using it to determine throw-ins and corners.

I hate the TMO in Rugby. It's used far too often and slows everything down. I'm not against the use of technology but I do think we shouldn't strive for perfection at the cost of enjoyment.

I'm all for them running a trial of different systems to see what works. as Long as it's used in the right way it should be good for the game. More correct decisions should be a great thing

I've seen them review plenty of tries in Rugby "just to be sure" when it's obvious to everyone else.

You say using technology for Goals, red cards, mistaken identities and penalties is pretty conclusive - does that mean every time anything happens in the box it will be reviewed? Could be looking at 10-15 incidents a game that way.

As said there'd need to be a system in place so it wouldn't disrupt the game that much. An appeal/challenge system where either the manager or captain can ask for a video ref has been talked about before. If they get things right it could benefit the game in other ways. If someone dives for a penalty, cons the ref and in an appeal system the captain asks for the video ref, then the decision comes back it's a dive and yellow card for the attacker, that's going to stop players trying to con refs as much. The aftermath of big decisions like pens and red cards usually takes a little time for the game to settle anyway, enough time for a review team to quickly look at an incident.
This is why you have trials, to see if it can be implemented effectively and improve the decision making process. Dismissing it out of hand as detrimental is a bit short sighted.
Like I said before people thought the idea of goal line tech would slow the game down and it does nothing of the sort. They just need to find a system that suits the game.

Official Silkyman Translation™ - Here is a link to an article about video refereeing which I wholeheartedly endorse because (Manchester) City are on the wrong end of decisions numerous times during EVERY match while everyone else gets decisions in their favour. The technology would see TRUE FAIRNESS brought back into the game and (Manchester) City would piss the league every season.

Macclesfield Town/Manchester City. It's complicated.
I had a horrible nightmare last night. Something was stalking me, following me at every turn. Unseen but always there. Obsessed.

Until I caught a glimpse in the distant trees, a faint glow surrounding it... 'Show Ignored Content'...

The whole stoppage argument is bullshit anyway. In the time a player is celebrating, replays can be watched and a decision made. In the time players are crowding round the ref, replays can be watched and a decision made. In the time a player is receiving treatment, replays can be watched and a decision made. In the time players are squaring up to each other and acting like pathetic schoolchildren, replays can be watched and a decision made. Sure there are some incidents where play doesn't stop naturally (eg a missed penalty shout might lead to a counter) but that's why you trial it to come up with a system that works and causes the least disruption.

Some talk about every 50/50 decision being reviewed but they're just missing the point. The idea isn't to use replays for every decision, just major ones ie goals, red cards, penalties which, for the most part, see natural stoppages anyway.

Seen others talking about it ruining the enjoyment of the game but that's nonsense as well. Can't speak for everyone but in my experience coming out of a game feeling like you've been screwed over by officials isn't particularly enjoyable.

The other problem with video refs is that basically, contact doesn't mean a foul. So these super slo mo clips of a player being touched lightly and it somehow making his other leg crumple wouldn't actually change anything. Unless we change the rules that ANY contact is a foul, and put up with the 15 penalties a game that would lead to, and a corner being as good as a goal.

It would be useful for offsides, though, especially as it wouldn't slow the game down, as it would only be used if the ball was in the net anyway, and would also work with penalty calls where the question is in or out of the box, as well as handballs when it can sometimes be obvious on a second viewing.

For diving... As I've said before, evoke the handball law of 'unnatural position' and instigate a one game ban. Left leg collapses after a light touch on the right? Ban. Leg 'left in' trailing behind to ensure contact? Ban. Superman impression? Ban.

Even if there IS 'contact'.

Change the culture to reward trying to stay on your feet and punish any effort to con the ref.
