The first of many games we will get beat in this season.

We look good in the middle but at the back and up front we just aint cut it pre season. Walsall could put 3 or 4 passed us here

Our strengths come out wide with the wing backs, our midfield ain't push overs either but I can see them being overrun for spells of the game by Oldham's quality. Defensively we should be quite solid as we always are, our problem is just whether we can break you down, if we can't we will overextend, the fans will get frustrated and we will be more liable to concede. I think we are favourites, but I wouldn't say we strong favourites, we still have a few big flaws.

Your solid at the back while we are pityful upfront. Today was the first goal we have scored pre season against league opposition. Oldham -0

At the other end we are all over the place at the back especially from set pieces. Again against league oppo we aint kept a clean sheet. You wont have trouble breaking us down. You could score 4 or 5 here

Walsall v Oldham, the game which perfectly epitomises League 1 football.

Oldham were very poor against us today, and some Carlisle fans are tipping them for relegation already. Obviously it's just a friendly, but they offered very little going forward, and missed some good chances.

Comfortable victory for Walsall I reckon.

Swap either Cook with Lalkovic, or Andy Taylor with a new CB or Matty Preston, and that will most likely be our starting line up.

I'd imagine Croft is a nailed on starter because he works his arse off and he’ll need to with Walsall playing with wing backs. That could also work for us with Forte looking to exploit the space left behind. With Jones/Winchester looking to run at the defence and pick out through balls, and even Green & Dunn to come off the bench, there’s some hope for us there.
Still worried defensively, though this Burn (loanee from Middlesbrough) is supposed to be mustard.

First game of the season – excited is an understatement. Not even arsed that I’m pessimistic about the result. 7.30 train from Manchester, into Birmingham for 9ish. Brekkie, plenty of ale and a ruby when we get home.

Splendid.

How many have Oldham sold in advance do we know? Expecting 800 odd? Not sure how we are going to go at all. Not even remotely excited for this new season, last season was dull, nothing has changed on or off the pitch despite the promise of a bigger budget this time. We have a lopsided squad, but a decent starting XI that should see us compete with most sides. Smith normally drills a defence down to a tee, it should be a case of whether we can get 50 games out of Bradshaw or someone to score alongside him.

Look for Rico Henry, the left wing back if Smith decides to play him there..only just turned 18. Best kid I've seen at his age since I've been watching Walsall.

I'll go with a steady 1-1 start to the season, infront of 4,601 - Bradshaw (who else) with our goal.

I'd be very disappointed if we dont take 1000+

HT 1-0 Walsall.
Cracking strike from Sawyers.

As a match, we've played the better stuff, but not sure whether that's us being good or Smith asking Walsall to sit back.

Good goal, probably had the better of the minimal chances. Oldham better on the ball and had more of it.

Don't like wing backs defensively, easy to get down the side of us. A good counter attacking team will demolish us.

Woeful performance second half, Oldham had more of the pressure and ball, didn't give us chance to breath and deserved the point. Not sure whether we were just sluggish today but that's the least rhythm we have had on the ball at home for about 2 years. That was such a boring match though, uninspiring from us and a couple of average league one teams, no real quality on display, lots of effort and work rate but not a lot else. I can see a similar season for both sides. Why didn't Forte start? I thought he was the only real goal threat on the pitch when he did come on.

Good support vocally from Oldham and 990 represents a good following for a club who have spent how many of the last years in league one.

We were good first half, they were poor first half. We were poor second half, they were good second half.

Draw a fair result IMO.

That minutes silence was probably the most moving I've ever been involved in. Thankfully it was observed perfectly few dick heads normally ruin it.
Nice touch by our fans chanting "stand up for the Walsall 3"

Draw fair result we were all over the show first twenty and were lucky to go in only one goal down.

David Dunn despite having zero pace was absolute mustard on the ball. If he stays fit and we get runners around and off him he will be a good signing. I was disappointed forte didn't start but I could see why he was absolutely fucked at the end of the game. He'd only played about 20mins. Top finish from him and from Sawyers.
