It's not the massive news is been made out to be, it's probably quite cynically timed to be honest. Given that NASA has known about water ice on Mars for years and years and this phenomena was first spotted in these pictures in 2011, it's probably not a coincidence that this news was released the week that The Martian comes out.... a film that was made in conjunction with NASA and is very pro-NASA.

I work for Fox and that's not true. It wasn't a publicity stunt.

I'm not sure why a Fox employee would know either way.
Meaning if it was some sort of publicity stunt we would have known, since Fox handle all the marketing for the movie.

I haven't read about the announcement in too much detail but I'm pretty sure it's not old news. Nasa were pretty sure that there was water on Mars but that's the first time that they've managed to prove that it does exist, in some form, today.

I'm not suggesting that there was some grand conspiracy between NASA and Fox to sit on this and then make a movie about Mars to capitalize on it, but it does seem awfully convenient that this should come out the same week a movie about Mars with which NASA were involved should come out, especially when the guy primarily responsible for the discovery said the phenomena was first noticed in the photographs back in 2011.

Aye but the photos in 2011 they were only using an educated guess that it was water causing it. Its only now with the discovery of the hydrated salt that they know its water.

Ridley Scott has has said he was told about this a while back but it was too late into production ion the Martian to change the plot...

I know you're not and that's not what I was alluding to. Nasa were pretty involved in the making and the publicity of the movie but that announcement in particular was a pure coincidence in terms of timing and nothing more.

Frealaf summed it up well; they did notice that in 2011 but had no evidence for it until now, so it is pretty big news if you ask me.

Again, how would you (or Fox) know that?

Cant wait for them to find life on Mars. It'll turn out to be some single-celled bacteria-like organism as opposed to a big green thing with ten eyes and the whole world will go into meltdown.

Well yeah but I'd still find that pretty interesting?

Finding life on Mars, no matter what kind of life it is, would be the most monumental scientific discovery in human history.

Not saying it wouldn't be interesting. You just know people will go into meltdown over it being an anticlimax and not like Hollywood though.

As for it being the most monumental discovery I disagree but I'm biased.

Biased how? What scientific discovery are you a stakeholder in?

Definitely going to be life (in some form) there if there is water.
