I often tend to disregard the fact that Gang of Four released two more albums besides Entertainment and Solid Gold, back in the 80's. I have always disliked Hard, their 4th one, but Songs of the Free which was their third LP is an amazing album. Granted, it sounds nothing like Solid Gold, the sophomore GO4 album (a better album than Entertainment IMO) but it's still a very strong album worthy of a listen every now and then.

Never got into the albums but this hit the spot and coincidentally chimes with tonight's (slightly more embarassing) entertainment.

Happy days. I saw this bunch in Preston Guild Hall in the mid 80's and risked my credibility by loving their offerings - I was dressed in denim and possibly tie-dye.

I've been listening to British hardcore of the 90's a lot recently. A largely forgotten or ignored era with Britpop, indie, grunge and American metal holding sway over guitar inclined ears. Some marvellous bands especially live. It was a great time for live music too with many venues for bands even in the provinces. Saw this band in Blackwood miners institute!

This lot in some horrible dive in Bristol ( can't even remember the name.

There was really quite a vibrant scene. I suppose one of the bands to make a sort of crossover into mainstreamish was Pitchshifter but they still stayed fairly obscure. Their fame ( or infamy) consigned mainly to the gigging scene. Bloody noisy though...

Anyway, thanks for reading. I'm off to look for a Armour of God split single on Ebay, pray for my bank account

Aber gas Was the AOG split ever released on vinyl? I could only find the cd version single on Discogs - https://www.discogs.com/Armour-Of-God-3rd-Stone-Armour-Of-God-3rd-Stone/release/6134153. It's a bit pricey but the seller accepts offers too, and it might be worthwhile to make one as the guy's new to Discogs. You know what I'm getting at don't you - some new sellers will accept even half of what they're asking just so that they can increase their feedback score.

I'm assuming you've already got the tunes as mp's or something but want to get your hands on the real thing right?

That's right. I'm a bit of a collector/ hoarder. Cheeky sod wants £20!for the cd . I'll have a sniff about.

I don't think it was Vanni. If it was I can find no evidence of it anywhere. I have heard that there is a live album ( bootleg) knocking about on vinyl. The search continues

TBH, most of the underground releases were only pressed in very limited quantities (around 500 for the most part), and only got a repress when they sold out very quickly. And it's still the case nowadays afaik. I had loads of psych.trance cds/12''s that were going for very decent money on Discogs, and I didn't even know it until a friend of mine told me all about it. I mean I knew that they were all pressed in ltd quantities as I became good friends with a girl who used to work for the small mail order firm that I got them from, and she (RIP ) used to tell me all about pressing details. I just didn't know that there is such a demand for this stuff, just as there is for the usual collectible stuff like reggae, punk and prog rock.

Re. AOG, I'm afraid I can't help you at all as I only heard of them through the Iron Monkey connection, and tbh I was never an IM fan. All I know is that there were a couple of IM cdr boots made at some time or other, but have got no idea if these were factory produced cdr's or just home made stuff by some fan, though I strongly suspect it's the latter.

I have been reflecting on the bands/albums that I go to when in my cups.

Housemartins are up there, along with Saw Doctors, Fairport Convention, Ramones and lots of Spanish stuff that I can't quite understand. This one featured this evening..........and they are up there with Black Uhuru and Steel Pulse in my "Reggae Bands that are not from Jamaica," list:

Right, a mate gave a couple of pretty beat up old Neil Young records, and after a good wash I managed to get one - Hawks and Doves - to a pretty decent shape. The other one's damaged beyond repair (After the Goldrush), but I think I still have it on cd somewhere

Hawks is one of those Neil Yong records that I had never owned or listened to before, and tbh there are quite a few of those, I'd say possibly around 5 or 6 albums actually. I was only familiar with a couple of tracks off Hawks, so today was the first time I listened to it in it's entirety, and it's decent enough esp. the first side.

Another record I'm listening to right now is Nebraska. Now I don't like Bruce Springsteen a lot, in fact I find most of his stuff to be virtually unlistenable. Having said that, Nebraska is a classic and imo the best thing he has ever done.

Anyway, my recent purchase of a Whippersnapper LP has lead me in strange directions. The album is called TSUBO and in seeking some tracks to share from Youtube, I've gone from Swarbrick to this...............Italian Metal? Is there such a thing as Grindcore? If so how would I recognise it?

I think I need an expert's help to get it in the right ghetto.

I'm no expert but I'd put them down as grindcore with a touch of death and doom metal on the side. The Cards what say you?

I'd label them as death metal/grindcore definitely

Usually a grindcore album and it's songs are very short, which means they try to pack in as much as possible, no chorus and what sounds like no real construction to the songs.

It was originally influenced by extreme punk and extreme metal back in the 80s.

That tune is most definitely death metal and I'm not hearing any grind at all. But apparently they label themselves as grindcore so I checked out the whole album and sure enough, the grindcore is much more evident on the whole album just not on that particular track that Alan posted.

To sum up, the expert agrees with The Cards and Abers. Deffo death metal/grindcore, with the emphasis on death metal, and it is the opinion of this expert that the band are wrong to label themselves as just grindcore.

I spinned Hawks and Doves a couple more times, and have to say side 1(aka the folksy quiet side) is so much better than side 2 (the rock side). I'm also listening to Live Rust and RNS right now, but can't shake off the thought how much Mercury Rev were inspired by Neil Young. The Rev recorded 3 albums and were going to call it quits but they took a chance with one last throw of the dice and decided to record something totally different to their usual stuff, Deserter's Songs. It was well received by the critics, and they all thought it sounded like some lost album by The Band, but I've always thought Neil was the bigger influence. So now I'm listening to Mercury Rev thanks to Neil Young!

I've got Deserter and it's follow up All Is Dream on cd, and tbh I've always thought Deserter is a vastly overrated album. I also happen to think that Dream is a much better effort than Deserter, but I've yet to meet anybody who thinks likewise.

This one's off Deserter, and the following two are from All Is Dream.

Thanks for the intro. Not a surprise but our tastes differ. The Deserter track piqued my interest but the All is Dream tracks killed it - at least at this time in the morning. I like/enjoy most Neil Young efforts but the albums/tracks that get the blood racing are mostly Crazy Horse type with loads of guitar riffs and/or great vocals. That said, it's all great
