Read I Am Pilgrim last summer whilst on holiday, really is a gripping read. Wonder how much they'll have to cut to get it film length!

Just finished A Time To Kill by John Grisham. Really enjoyed it. Not gonna watch the film though as I don't want it tainted and I probably wouldn't enjoy it! However the casting in the film adaptation was spot on for me. Have got Sycamore Row, the sequel to read next.

Really enjoyed The Girl With All The Gifts.

Just finished The Martian and considering all the hype, it bored me senseless. One step up from an Ikea instruction manual.

I enjoyed The Martian. The science bits were explained fairly well and if I didn't really understand them then I just moved on.

I'm about 3/4s of the way through The Girl With All The Gifts. Thought it was a bit meh for the first 70 or 80 pages but really got into it now.

It's a good flick. The actors are great in it and quite follow the characters of the book. Grisham had a say in the producing process of the film so that's probably why.

Sycamore Row was a disappointing sequel though. Tell me what you think after you've read it.

I just thought there was too much of it but then I suppose that was the point of the book. Also felt the NASA stuff was way cheesey. The film could be good though.

I liked the first 70-80 pages. I did't have a clue where the book was going (didn't read any reviews) so was a little disappointed it veered off to Walking Dead / formulaic zombie story terrority for a while. Picked up nicely though.

Just finished The Treatment by Mo Hayder. Love it.
Also recently enjoyed Lord of the Flies. Reminded me of school. Reading up on the links between the island and real life and historical events is fascinating.

Avalon Burning by Richard Perrot.
A book that destroys the myth of Glastonbury being a town of peace and love written by a guy who lived there for 20 years and i know what he's talking about as i lived there for 14 years until 3 years ago. While reading this sometimes i burst out laughing and the next minute i feel sad as i know that he's correct in his damming put downs especially over mother earth wimmin as he puts it, if you've ever visited Glastonbury high street in the last 20 years you should read this book.

Read I Am Pilgrim while I was on holiday this week. Pretty sure it was in the top 100, in which case whoever nominated it did a good job. I'm not really a big reader of thrillers, but I thought this was superb. It's a bit longer than it needs to be, but a real page-turner so it didn't drag. A few bits that didn't quite seem believable or that I just didn't like, but on the whole I'd recommend it to anyone.
Yep, read this aswell - enjoyed it a good mix of politics / religious content / thriller. Any recommendations for holiday reads? Something like Andy mcnab crossed with Dan Brown???

My copy of The World of Ice and Fire finally arrived the other day so I'm working my way through that in between Lee Child's Jack Reacher series.
Wasn't sure what I thought of jack reacher - whether it was because I read out of series order I don't know. What r the earlier books in the series like?

I've just finished "All the light we cannot see" by Anthony Doerr.

This book was slow and I don't really feel like I enjoyed it. Set in World War 2, it folows the story of a blind french girl, who flees to St Malo and a German Orphan who is an excellent technician, that ends up in the Hitler youth. Eventually their stories come together.

Despite moving slowly the book is well written, I actually found all the charcters interesting and I did enjoy parts of it. The most annoying thing was that it kept skipping forward and then back, the parts it skipped to were actually incredibly dull and pointless in my opinion. It would probably have flowed better if it didn't do that.

Average book in my opinion and I am relieved it's over.

Next up "Mind Altering Drugs in History and Culture"

I finished reading Ravage by Barjavel. An science-fiction novel taking place in 2050 where the world is ruled by electricity until the power goes off all of a sudden and people react with panic, fright and cannibalism. It is a very good book and I can see why it is often mentioned in the same mould as 1984 and Brave New World. Not the same of course and the ending is a bit crap but I recommend it (although I'm not a big fan of reading translated books so read it in French).

Started Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury 2 days ago. It's... special.

Got a bit more in yo reading again.

Near the end of The Fifth Gospel by Ian Caldwell, bit different to my normal choices but been fairly good (not as action packed as I usually go for). Enjoyable read, interesting story lines and built around facts so at least feel I'm learning sumat at the same time.

Claudius by Douglas Jackson. Another novel i'm reading about the Roman Invasion of Britain in 43AD and this is by far the best i've read on the subject, the battle scenes are described brilliantly, finding it hard to put down.

Finished reading 'The Last Wish' the first of the Witcher books i believe, was decent, but definitely glad I played the game first as I imagine some of it would have been confusing otherwise (the signs for example)
Always seem to find these series once they're already famous (ASOIF for example), never get to be a hipster liking it before it was cool...

I've taken "On the Road" on at least 3 holidays and still not got halfway into it. You need a back up - I suggest you try The Nine Tailors.

Just finished Fahrenheit 451. Can anyone tell me what's so good because I'm lost for any kind positive criticism.

Ray Bradbury, that's the man who wrote it, made a whole novel (or classic) about firemen being transformed from people who turned out fires to ones that ignited them to burn books because it was dangerous to manking. Or something. Follows a very strange and scarcely readable type of writing which offers little and delivers nothing. The ephiphany that the main character gets is predictable and apart from killing his boss he doesn't do anything of note.

Maybe Carel or Scumbag can educate me on my lack of open mind. Anyone is welcome to try though!

Reading Missing You by Harlan Coben. It's much better and I think I'll have it done by next week. Fast-paced and all.

Well worth sticking with. BBC 2 have a drama based on the first 2 books being shown next month so i'd hurry up and read the 2nd book before you watch it.

I've picked up "The Heroes" by Joe Abercrombie from the library but I haven't read the one that was released directly before it. Is it necessary?

If you've read the First Law Trilogy you'll be fine, the three standalone books are independent of each other.

Just finished Dan Brown's "The Da Vinci Code".

Read the first 95% of it and thought it was dreadful, but the last 5% of the book was absolutely mind-blowing and explained the poor grammar and terrible pacing of the novel up that point. Dan Brown is a genius. So glad I persevered with it, I'd have felt like such a fool to put this book down so close to the end.

Recommended.
