From a long journey for a called-off game, to a restricted view, to getting utterly soaked...

What's your worst away day tale and why?

I recall Accrington Stanley away in 2008/09, went up on the train for a Tuesday game, booked into my hotel... was raining a fair bit, got to the pub next to the ground and the game was called off (this a few weeks after traipsing to Exeter to get called off an hour before kick off)

Re-arranged game was 2 weeks later, did the same thing, train/hotel and we put in a diabolical performance and lost 2-0... so over £200 spent on the two efforts to get to the game... dark days!

Travelled down to Exeter a few years ago only for it to be called off due to a frozen pitch whilst we were walking around town.
Away to Gillingham in our promotion season and the coach suffered a flat tyre on the way home, meaning we got to sit on the M25 for about 3hrs before it was repaired, the fact we won the game was a bit of consolation.

I think the furthest I've been for a postponed match was Norwich thankfully.

Another notably terrible away day would include going to Portsmouth, watching us go 6-0 down, deciding to leave early and miss the traffic, and missing our goal in a 6-1 loss.

Doncaster away last season. Our fans acting like idiots in the stands and our team playing like them.

On way back to the town some of the local youth hauling abuse at the Chinese Bus Driver. Classy.

Getting dicked at Bristol rovers on a Tuesday night 7 1 I think it was. It was a spur of the moment thing to go anyway. What was worse was on the way home feeling pissed off and thinking of work the next day, my timing belt snapped on the car as I got on the m32. Had to get towed back to Burton from Bristol at 1030. Got home at 1am. Engine was fucked. Had to get a taxi to work. May have stomached it more if we had won.

FA Cup first round trip to Burscough in around 2006. None of us had heard of the place, and to be honest you could look at a map for a pretty long time before you'd find it. About 300 of us squeezed into the shoebox that was the away end for the game, which saw us 1-0 down at the break in appalling weather. We turned it around to 2-1 despite having a man sent off and most of us were just looking forward to getting out of there with a narrow win. Cue injury time, and Burscough score 2 to win it, followed by unsavoury scenes as the locals invaded the pitch and a few attacked the travelling fans in our shoebox. Awful day.

If I'm totally honest, I'm still not entirely sure where it is.

I'll recount a tale I told on the TFF. GFC4EVA will be pleased - it's Gillingham away. Fortunately I can't remember most of this, sadly I am reminded of it on occasion by those who were present.
Monday 5th April 2010 - Gillingham v Southend, League 1. We were imploding, players not paid for 9 months, on the field not putting in any effort. I'd done every away and the results got worse and worse. Now Gillingham away is an awful trip, but you can make it good if you avoid Gillingham and go to Rochester instead, nice town and some great pubs. My problems started in the Man of Kent (if you like real ale make sure you head there) where we decided the football was likely to be shit again so lets drink as much as humanly possible. A few football fans go in there and the barman challenged us (about 6 of us) to beat Exeter City fans record of 18 schnapps each. No problem there he could take our money we could get so pissed we'd forget the football. We beat it - 21 each, after this I can just about remember getting the train, just about remember getting to the ground and meeting a friend of mine. You see I wasn't in the away end, a mate of mine's parents had season tickets and had some offer to bring someone along for free, the last thing I remember is him asking me if I was alright.

The rest is recounted back to me as I genuinely have no memory of it. I apparently passed ok to get through the turnstile, was a bit too loud in my colourful criticism of the Southend ownership whilst sitting in the home end, but it was just before HT I upset the locals the most when I projectile vomited all over the 2 rows in front of me - including a little girl. According to my mate I got up and run off to the toilets attempting to hold in more vomit that was just seeping out round my hands. I came back, stinking of puke and basically passed out for the 2nd half.
Now after the game I managed to get out under my own steam but instead of heading for the train I headed for the Southend players coach, managed to shake my mate off and get on and shout about 10 inches from Alan McCormack's face "why the fuck are you still playing, don't play for no money, walk out on the bastard, all of you walk out, Ron Martin is taking the piss out of all of you" McCormack bundled me off the coach and told me to fuck off.
I still don't know how I made it home, I lived in London at the time and had 2 trains, the tube and a walk to make it back but woke up the next morning wondering why I was in bed and a text on my phone from my mate just saying 'call me'.
Next away game, at Leeds, I waited for the players after and found McCormack to apologise, he said to me 'It's ok I could tell you were off your tits.'

Last season I drove to MK Dons, one junction north of MK I picked up two flat tyres. Spent the afternoon in a Northampton layby listening to the over excited commentators on MK radio as they dicked us 6-1.

Drove 100 miles - spent 4 hours in a layby - lost 6-1 - spent £300 on new tyres - then drove home. Shit day!

Only consolation was not buying tickets beforehand.

Nuneaton, by any chance?
Bound to be. The whole town is rough as arseholes. I should know my dad lives there and it's full of headcases. When they was at the old ground they used to get crowds up to 4000 and there where plenty of rough boozers near the ground.

Curzon Ashton....and Carlisle
Worst is easily Yeovil back in 2003 (I think or was it 2004)

Played them in August, their first ever FL home game, I was going to most games at the time so was on the 2 coaches we sent down that day.

Traffic was horrendous, usual August M5 crash f*ck-up meant miles of queues and non-moving traffic, we had all of a 5 minute toilet stop having set off at 6am having heard of big problems. Our coach turned off at Bristol and went down lots of back roads to Yeovil, we arrived at 3.15, we were on outskirt of Yeovil nearing kick-off and asked for a delay to in easier words be told to b*gger off (after you have made a 9 hour trek its disgusting they don't give a f*ck and delay it - yeovil said it was ref....who knows)

we were already 1-0 down by time we got into ground, the other coach which went down the M5 didn't get in until 15 odd minutes after us. Game was dire.....absolutely dire, we lost 3-0 it should easily have been 30-0 and I only seen 75 minutes of the match. Food had sold out before we arrived so having not really stopped I'd had nothing to eat all day, ground took about 45 minutes to get out of afterwards.

then on way home find yet more problems at Bristol....this time typically north and we had to divert over bridge into Wales and go up via Newport back north adding yet more problems before if I remember when FINALLY sensing home finding out the M6 was closed at Lancaster and having to divert off the motorway and through Lancaster to get back on further up to finish off the monstrous journey......9 hours 15 to get there, probably 9-10 hours to get back, a 3-0 defeat, miss part of game, nothing to eat and well..............you do not forget it really.

Went from Cornwall to Bristol City in 2006. Left at 4.30am, and watched us get humped 6-0.

There are a few others as well

I remember getting lost in York once, our bus driver asked a bloke in a York shirt for directions, told us he didn't know the way

As for the game, went 2-0 at half time, only to lose 3-2 after ex-Lion Paul Stephenson ran us ragged. Tuesday night too, no idea what time we got home.

Other dishonourable mentions include successive 0-3 defeats at Exeter and Scunthorpe in 1994, a 1-3 loss at Cardiff, and conceding 2 injury time goals at Plymouth in 2004.

Went to Kidderminster on a wet Wednesday in the JPT back when Conference sides were in it, didn't get there until half time because the minibus driver decided he was 'due a break' as soon as we hit the M62 and then when we finally got there we were losing. Then we lost. All anyone bangs on about Kidderminster is the food and they'd sold out too.

I'd forgotten about that Plymouth game. That was the beginning of the end of our Championship existance
