Sorry if this has been covered previously but what are your thoughts regarding the new windows 10 operating system? when I bought my current laptop it came with windows 8 installed which to me was total rubbish, I took the option of a free upgrade to windows 8.1 pro which is very user friendly, Windows 10 is available from July the 29th which I have on reserve.

You won't get it tomorrow. It's a staggered release, with beta testers getting it tomorrow and people who pre-ordered getting it gradually over the coming weeks through Windows Update.

I'm heavily involved in IT and have been speaking to Microsoft developers, I'd highly suggest upgrading to this sooner rather than later. I'll be getting it over this evening. But it'll be expensive come 12 months time.

It's supposed to be absolutely fantastic. No proper issues have arisen from over 1 Million testers so far.

If I get a free upgrade now (for 12 months) how much will they charge me in a ear's time? If i don't want it, can I easily roll back?

That's not my understanding. From what I've read you get the free upgrade (from Windows 7 and 8.x), as long as you claim it within 12 months of the release date. Once you take advantage of that upgrade, you have it for life, including all the usual support Microsoft give out. If you wait for over a year though, you have to pay for it as per Vista users and below.

I've had the free upgrade icon in my tray for about a month now, but I'm going to take a rain check for the time being, or at least until I get a proper chance to check it out. I don't use Windows much, I have Windows 7 on my laptop dual booted with Linux. But Windows 8.x was a complete bag of shite, and if 10 doesn't offer significant improvements, especially with that terrible metro implimentation, I'll be sticking with Windows 7 for the odd occasion I'm required to use Microsoft's OS.

It's supposedly still riddled with bugs, although I'd always recommend holding off a few weeks anyway. Allow Microsoft to iron out any issues.

Many thanks for your thoughts, like Pagnell, I have had the free upgrade icon sitting in the task bar for several weeks but will wait a little while before initiating the full upgrade to 10
Cheers.

Ah right, thanks. I've had the icon for yonks, and already reserved a copy. Not had any notification to say I can upgrade yet but i'm not in any rush to be fair. I may wait a week or two to see if there are any issues.

I'll be upgrading this evening and I'll let you guys know what I think.

Not sure where you heard that Rammy, but from distributors of the software I've been told it's basically bug free.

I remembered I had my parents old Acer, which they gave to my son when they bought a MacBook Pro a few months back, and it has Windows 7 on it. I checked it out and it had the update icon in the system tray but, like my own laptop, it wasn't in the first wave of upgrades yesterday and it could be weeks before it was updated. However, for those interested, the update can be forced, which I did using the tool from the following link:-

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Download the 64-bit or 32-bit version applicable to your system and select upgrade. And as long as you have the free update icon in your tray and a genuine copy of Windows 7 or Windows 8, it will download, install and automatically activate.

As for Windows 10 itself, I admit I'm impressed from what I've seen so far, although it was only a few hours. Edge is a bit buggy and doesn't support any addons at the moment, so I've installed Firefox as I can't live without AdBlock Plus. Also, the Windows UI is a bit hit and miss but that's more than likely because I'm used to a more simple layout offered by Linux or Windows 7. Overall it's a vast improvement on Windows 8. And with a bit of getting used to I can see my preferring it to Windows 7 eventually. I will carry on trying it out on the Acer but I can see myself upgrading within a few weeks at this rate.

My graphics card was outdated and getting an upgrade meant reinstalling 8 on disk, which I don't have, and doing a bunch of other stuff. Upgraded to 10 yesterday and it's upgraded automatically so I'm very pleased. I can play youtube videos without my laptop BSODing every ten minutes now!

Have to say i'm quite impressed with it so far. It's very smooth and the new layout is something I enjoy. So far it's certainly worth the wait for the age it took to download and install. Will have a proper play about over the weekend though.

I've played around with one or two of the pre-release versions over the last few months, so I can't say what's been improved or tweaked in the actual release version. What I would say is that Windows10 has bags of potential, but isn't the finished article. The fact that it's been made free for a year tells you that it isn't a fully polished completed product.

The idea of forever rolling patching and driver updates makes me a little nervous. Windows and patches / driver updates don't have the greatest track record, so limiting everyone's control over their application is worrying. But give them a chance, they might impress us.

Also there's a myriad of data protection and privacy issues if that's the sort of thing that interests you. Win10 will be constantly calling back to base at Microsoft telling them all about you and your habits - giving MS a Google style tranche of data to manipulate and sell off. You can limit this by configuring various privacy options, first and foremost not using Cortana.

But it looks quite good, it fixes all sorts of dumb things in Windows8, although personally I think 8.1 did a good job of that. Edge browser could be the start of something really good depending on how MS develop it.

I won't be in any rush to ditch my 8.1, but I'll get there. When I do I'll format and install from afresh, not a fan of installing one OS on top of another.

8.1 is a bag of unusable shite. Even ignoring the fact I much prefer Unix to Windows, I'd be all over 10 if I had the misfortune of owning a system with 8.1 as an OEM.

When I do I'll format and install from afresh, not a fan of installing one OS on top of another.

Agreed, something I never do personally. But one of the three install options is a fresh OS without losing personal data, which I selected. A format isn't required.

I feel like i've been on the waiting list for an Eternity. Microsoft seem to be letting people through in batches to create a bit of a "buzz" around it on Social Media etc.

Well I went back on my advice earlier in this thread, and attempted to upgrade last night. It hung on a black screen of death, before dying.

Had to restore back to Windows 7, and then installed a fresh install of 10 today. Not pleased to say the least.

See my post earlier in the thread. The upgrade can be forced using the tool I posted a link to, I've done it on two laptops now, one running Windows 7 and one running Windows 8.1, both upgraded to Windows 10 with no issues.

Yep no issues with me. It's far better than 7 and 8.1. Upgrade when you can.

I don't mind helping anyone with the install too. Drop me a PM.

I just upgraded to 10, it takes a while, about 1½ hours for me but I'm pleased with the result although I chose not to use the Microsoft browser as I prefer Chrome, all up the upgrade is well worth the effort.

I upgraded then found out that the updated drivers for my trackpad didn't work, was annoying for a few days but they have fixed that now. Liking it better than 8.1 so far.

Really like it, good stuff from Windows. Got it at home & at work now.

Edge has potential, needs fine tuning and add-ons to make it viable.

I'd recommend it to anybody with the option for the free upgrade, haven't encountered any issues to date.

It's good so far, no major complaints and I'm actually starting to think it's an improvement over Windows 7. Small things make the difference, for example I like how the option list for a newly inserted device appears as a notification in the bottom right corner, rather than a really annoying option windows in the middle of the screen, which often led to accidental selection of the wrong option as you went to click something that was behind it moments before.

It's worth noting that Microsoft are as bad as Google for harvesting user information for commercial purposes, and Windows 10 is set up by default very much with that in mind. My advice is not to use Edge (which is too buggy and feature lacking anyway) rather use Firefox, plus don't use an email account as your login account, rather set up a local user instead. I've gone one step further than that and removed all their bloatware like OneDrive and the location services, the latter of which I have zero use for on a laptop and the former for which I use Mega instead.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/3f38ed/guide_how_to_disable_data_logging_in_w10

Worth a read. I've made a few of those changes to make W10 more secure. It's still not up there with Linux, but it's certainly better than you have by default on a normal install.

Far superior than the last two flops, this is what they should have done in the first place, ease the changes in rather than changing the whole interface and frustrating everyone.

Meant to also say that I like the option of changing the font size & colour to a permanent setting in emails, couldn't do that with 8 or 8.1

Surprised to see so many positive reviews. I have Windows 10 on my desktop, while my Laptop still has Windows 7. Personally, I still prefer the windows 7 since it is much simpler and stable.

Disagree with stability, I think they are worlds apart with 10 comfortably ahead. It's much faster aswell as they've rebuilt the core.
