Sadly I have a bizarre memory where I can vividly remember some things and forget others easily and its totally random as to when, so I sort've am not sure if this is my first memory of football, but I just always remember it as one of my earliest.
That was a Tuesday night game in 1991, we were absolutely garbage, I'd been going a couple of years by then but never really bothered enjoying it, was moreso dragged down like I am sure afew of you lot were at first.
We played Gillingham at home, they had not won away I don't think for a couple of years, they go on to win 4-0 in one of the most ridiculous ways ever with some truly horrendous defending.......the goals are online and well worth a watch if you want a laugh.
anyway a reason I remember this game is our crowd, only about 2,000, they were p*ssed off before game and on brink of revolt, the game had a nasty atmosphere before it even began and got worse very quickly. the Entire game was spent with 2,000 fans...all back then drunken yobbish blokes really, utterly destroying our team, slagging every tough, attacking the manager on touchline, attacking the board members in main stand, cheering on Gillinghams every touch which as you can imagine got worse at 0-1, 0-2, 0-3, 0-4.....final whistle to mass boo's, sack the board, sack the manager, players hounded off the pitch, their players get a standing ovation before 20 odd minutes protests ing round after the game.
while it never got violent, as you can get from early 90's football fans it was quite vicious and nasty and felt intimidating all night............but wonderfully captivating for a 10 year old who has never seen all this tension/atmosphere and stuff.
manager was sacked next day I think and somehow we appointed worse!!
Although I was only 5 I can remember tv news footage about the battle of Santiago in the 1962 World cup ! First game I went to(I grew up in Wolverhampton until I was 10) was I think Wolves v Spurs at the old Molineux on the old north bank, right at the front by behind the goal and the wall, think my head was at pitch level ! not sure of the date maybe 63 to 65, Ron Flowers I remember was the Wolves captain and Jimmy Greaves I think was playing for Spurs. Was a long time ago, I can remember there were a few goals and Spurs won. Around the same time a friend of me mams took me to see Villa play Spurs I think, Villa won 1-0 and Phil Woosnam scored the only goal. Moved to Burton around 68/9 and had never even heard of Burton Albion. Saw some reports about them in the local paper and that they were in the Southern league. One day at school I saw a youth with a Burton Albion programme, he let me have a gander at it and said he was going to watch them on Saturday if I wanted to go. I did just that, can't remember who we played or the score but I was hooked and Burton Albion FC has been my club and in my blood ever since. Strangely I do remember my very 1st away game, it was in the 1969/70 season against Barnet at Underhill. We lost 10-0 ! I gather the club were skint and the players hadn't been paid for a few weeks. Albion finished bottom of the Southern League Premier division that season registering 3 league victories ! The chairman re-mortgaged his house without telling his missus to keep the club afloat ! That man Tom Bradbury has the main suite in the new ground named after him.
My first football memory was of not being very interested in Italia 90 when it was on the TV. Bloody missed my cartoons because of it, wretched football.
