GK - Elliot Parrish - Sean O'Driscoll

RB - Nicky Hunt - Steve Coppell
CB - Osei Sankofa - Brian Tinnion
CB - Dave Partridge - Brian Tinnion
LB - Ryan McGivern - Keith Millen

CM - Martyn Woolford - Keith Millen
CM - Tony Dinning - Brian Tinnion
CM - Nick Carle - Gary Johnson

CF - Peter Styvar - Gary Johnson
CF - Alvaro Saborio - Gary Johnson
CF - Bas Savage - Gary Johnson

Any other City fans who could add to that team?
Gary Johnson had a good eye for a Striker
Richard Foster could certainly fit in there.

Woolford wasn't bad on his day, but he didn't have enough of them.

Evander Sno could fit into this one - was such a hype about him, and he was smack bang average.

Also - Kilkenny?!

Thought Carle was fantastic - he was quick, his feet were even quicker, and I was sad to see him leave.

Good player.

I did think about Foster, he was bad but as bad as Nicky Hunt?
And fair shout on Sno, he could have been so much better.

Knew the Nick Carle inclusion would come back on me. We have had so many bad players in the last 5 years but cant recall many from midfield.
Darren Caskey should replace Nick Carle.

Nothing in this world is as bad as Nicky Hunt, how that bloke made it as a professional footballer is beyond me.

I think it's because most of our fans mistook Sno for Emmanuelson who was the one who destroyed us for Ajax in a friendly, hence the hype  Saying that Sno did have a few magic moments for us, scored a few including a great goal against PNE. Kilkenny has a far bigger right to be in the side

Some interesting names in there.

Maybe as a Dale fan I'm used to watching a poor standard of football, but Messrs Whaley and Howe were pretty reasonable in their loan spells at Spotland. Elding, too, wasn't hopeless and will probably remain our only ever sigjing from Ferencvaros.

Anyway, here we go:

GK - Kenny Arthur (Hill). Signed from Accy for unknown reasons - maybe he looked good as we put our usual four past them. Looked a bit dodgy, then injured and retired.

RB - Andy Fensome (Barrow). Signed to replace Andy Thackeray (ropy defensively, but good for half-a-dozen goals per season).
Little tubby squeaky bloke who wasn't very good either going forward or staying back.

CB - John Pender (Barrow). Veteran crock who might have been decent for Wolves in his youth, but took up residence on the treatment table.

CB - Pim Balkestein (Eyre). Archetypal panic-merchant with a 50p head. Whoever said the Dutch invented total footbal.

LB - Marc Twaddle (Eyre). Sometimes, names are misleading. This one wasn't. Included at left back because he apparently played there for whichever Scots team we acquired him from. At Dale he played a couple of pre-season games at CB, then even Eyre wouldn't pick him.

RM/W - Lee Cartwright (Barrow). Probably pretty decent at PNE when he was fast. By the time he turned up at Dale, he wasn't.

CM - Ian Crainey (Coleman). Permanently injured scouse crony, who was presumably signed to make up the fifth in the ex-Accy poker school.

CM - Peter Conning (Halom or Gray). Probably OK for Weymouth/Yeovil in the Conference, out of his depth in a crap Rochdale team in Div 4.

LW - Morike Sako (Parkin). Might have been Ok had he actually been played as a wide midfielder; however being 6'17" tall was inevitably shoved up front. Might actually have done better in the current set-up with K Hill using Chris O'Grady and Peter Vincenti succesfully in the "tall bugger out wide" role.

CF: Paul Williams (Sutton). 6'2" in his socks, 5'2" when attempting a header.Mind you, at least we didn't pay £250k for him in a case of mistaken identity (hello, any stray WBA fans!)

CF - Mark Carter. Blackburn may have had Shearer And Sutton, but Bury had Carter, Rigby And Pugh. And by the time they saw fitto pass Carter on tu us tthey'd squeezed every last drop of oomph out of him and he was running on empty.

Subs:
I've avoided loanees here, but will nominate Kangawa Lord N'Diwa as the one to challenge Exodus as the worst ever.

This one is hard for me as I only really started watching us weekly in 06/07 and since then we have been champions in league 2 and hung around in league 1, with only 1 real relegation worry since then. Mine are probably not that bad when it comes to Walsall historically.

GK - Jon Brain
The worst professional goalkeeper I have ever seen. Cost us about 15 goals in a 6 month period. Very awful. - (Hutchings)

RB - Lee Beevers.
He was just dreadful. Couldn't defend for love nor money, slow, poor on the ball. A proper league 2 utility player. Atrocious. Can't remember for sure who signed him, but I think it was Hutchings. Mention for Chris Palmer. - (Hutchings).

CB - I'm trying to thing of a loan player Brown I think his name was, bit of an oil tanker, played for Yeovil too I believe. Yeah, Aaron Brown. Was dire in a loan spell I believe. Clayton McDonald and Olly Lancashire are candidates here. Stephen Roberts was almost finished. (Hutchings)

CB - Clayton McDonald. Beast, but very slow, loved hoofing it and was generally dire. (Hutchings)

LB - We have been blessed with good or solid left backs for years. Netan Sansara was probably the worst I can think of. Mal Benning is also mostly dire. Ryan McGivern was poor. (Youth)

RM - Martin Brittain. Joined on loan, played a short period, never seen again. Pretty awful. Shout out to Carlos Fangueiro, just because of who he is and his spell here. Nearly forgot Kevin Betsy. (Money)

CM - Paul Smith. Bald, fat, slow and playing a game with the wrong shaped ball. He was, atrociously bad. (Merson)

CM - Marc-Antoine Gbarsin. He was poor. Proper lower league clogger. Toss up between Josh O'Keefe and Anton Peterlin too. Both just lacking really, O'Keefe was technically better, Peterlin worked harder. Both just non league dross. (Smith & Hutchings)

LM - Matt Richards. Beyond horrific when he played wide. Never a winger, just too slow and lacking in all areas. (Hutchings)

ST - Ryan Jarvis. Pathetic. Carthorse. Just really very, very bad in all departments. Be surprised if he isn't in a few here. One of the worst players to ever play in league 1. (Smith)

ST - So many choices here. Liam Dickinson, Sam Parkin, Michael Ngoo, Ashley Grimes, Troy Hewitt, but the number one mention goes too, Per Cederqvist, a randomer from scandanavia who money brought in during promotion. He played at Stockport 1 Tuesday night and actually jumped out of the way of heading the ball, we didn't have a shot, he didn't have a kick and we lost 1-0. (Money)

Some awful players I have missed off there that others will remind me of. Richard Taundry to name one. Shit, Trevor Benjamin. Carlos Carneiro, Mark Bradley.

What did you think of Hector "Ronaldinho" Sam? Personally knew him and many said he couldn't hit a barn door his composure was that non-existent.

He was alright defensively in his brief spell for us, zero footballing ability mind.

He did score a decent goal on the final day of the season though against Charlton, in Grezza's final game.

He was step up from David Gray anyway.

My absolute all time footballing hero. Can't believe you mentioned him!

I feel I should clarify in case his name crops up again. It's officially: Super Sammy Parkin

Struggling to think of shit players we signed from the non league.

At worst, we tend to get shit players from 'better' teams more than anything. Only very rarely do we 'polish a turd'.

Winger...Toby Ajala. Never made it. From Hayes & Yeading.

Striker...John Akinde is the only one off the top of my head. Signed from Ebbsfleet (I think) and was a big, fast battering ram with no footballing ability. Turns out he's doing well for Barnet this season. Maybe he's discovered a first touch?! His only goal came off some random part of his body, think it was probably one of his bollocks.

Striker...Guy Madjo was another - absolute dog shite, but kind of tried. If he signed for City, then I probably could. Signed from Petersfield Town.

Striker...Tyrone Barnett can be added <see P'boro post above>

Albert Adomah, Yannik Bolasie (both Barnet) and Adriano Basso (Woking) were good though.

CM - Paul Smith. Bald, fat, slow and playing a game with the wrong shaped ball. He was, atrociously bad.

He was one of the most solid, dependable midfielders we have ever had. Strong in the tackle and did the simple things with brutal efficiency. Well over 300 games during the best spell in our history, he was a rock.

However, by the time he left us, his legs had totally gone and he was a shadow of his former self. When you sent him back to us on loan it was painful and embarrassing to watch a club legend struggle to look like he'd ever played the game.

Amazingly he carried on playing well into his late 30's at non-league level.

Sounds like when we signed Ian Ashbee, Hull fans absolutely loved him.

Good player.

Produced one of the best midfield displays I've seen up at Sheffield United in our play off season. Was pretty gutted to see him go in the end. That said, went on to do nothing so a decent price in the end!

Ahh the memories.
C
Mathieu Manset - French striker, is a lower league journeyman at the age of 25. Released after 6 months
Legend. When he first joined Reading from Hereford I had high hopes for him. Fitness was a problem (and his undoing) but he looked a reasonably good striker until the confidence went. Would not have won the league / got promoted without his goals so don't think too badly of him. Shame we never got to chant his song too much, "A brimful of Manset on the 45". In the three years since he's left us he's played for Shanghai, Sion, Carlisle, Coventry, Antwerp, Walsall and Cheltenham!

If Cedric Baseya, Cameron Park, Mesca and Aman Verma had played for us for longer they would have ended up in this thread without a shadow of a doubt.
Ahh Cedric Baseya, we signed him four years later after he left Lille. Not sure how he played for Southampton in the Championship and Lille in Ligue 1. The highlight of his Reading career being a goal against Reading University in a reserve team friendly. Part of our deadly summer 2011 non league strikeforce alongside Brett Williams (now at Aldershot) neither played a game but both got Championship winners medals!

Bad Savage - what a guy. Set clean through on goal against Yeovil with no one around him for 20 yards and managed to trip himself up. Had the gall to throw his arms up to appeal for something too. Luckily we were winning so the whole of Ashton Gate broke into laughter...

Potent.
I realise that Steven Gregory may have been harshly dealt with, but he didn't drop down to the Southern Premier League with Dunstable for no good reason. Assuming he is still there, I will watch him play next week

I'm sorry :(

I do think had he have played for us this season, we would've seen a far better player than the one last season, similar to what has happened to Flint. Did well when he was coming on earlier in the season, albeit brief appearances, and has done well at Bury (apart from his red card last week  )

I'm sure he would of - a back 4 with Flint and El-Abd as the two centre halves was suicide.

In a settled, solid back 3 with a fantastic midfield infront of him, he would of recaptured the form he shown at Brighton.

LM: Lee Molyneux - Contentious one, signed from Accrington with a bit of fanfare given his knack for scoring goals. In his defence he was a LB but Davis tried to convert him into some lower league Gareth Bale when he lacked pace. Molyneux and the Dull one didn't see eye to eye and he was a disruptive influence in the dressing room. Currently preparing for a Conference tour with Micky Adams and Tranmere.
Not sure where this myth that Davis converted him comes from? He was converted to a LM at Accy, hence the goals he scored, hence the Bale references, hence why we signed him. He was our 2nd choice when we missed out on Sam Clucas.

Bury down to 10 men and he pops up with a 90th minute winner today
