Simple - Who has been your sides best player so far this season?

For us, I would have to say Kyle Dempsey. He has been great all season for such a young lad, and I think he is joint top scorer for us from midfield.

Troy Archibald Henville a close second, absolute tank of a defender.

Nathan Doyle easily, if there's a better out-and-out holding midfielder at this level than him I'd be amazed.

It's only a slight oversimplification to say that he both made and broke our season; we were shite before we signed him, went on an amazing run once he came into the team, and our form absolutely nose-dived around the same time that he picked up an injury.

The stats make it clear how key he has been for us:
With Nathan Doyle - W12 D8 L2 - 2 points per game - best in league
Without Nathan Doyle - W4 D2 L9 - 0.93 points per game - 23rd best in league

Can you repeat the question please?

Ah ok. I'll get back to you in a couple of weeks time. So many players had a remarkable year and it's kinda hard to decide who was the best one ;)

Definitely Nathan Doyle, been brilliant this season and those stats really tell their own story.

A few weeks ago I might have championed Wilkinson but he has fallen off a little bit during our poor run of late (to be fair, who hasn't?!)

Danny Holmes. Local lad, gives his all every game and the only player to be consistent for both Rob Edwards and Micky Adams, both in terms of holding down a place and in his own performances.
Owain fon Williams is a close second, as he has kept us in games and indeed won us points that a lesser goalkeeper wouldn't have. For me, the best keeper at this level.
If Odejayi's form in recent months had been from day 1, he would have been up there and Max Power is top goalscorer, but realistically there are a lot of our players who have massively underperformed.

I'd say Troy for us, closely followed by Dempsey. Nice that Dempsey's come through and done so well in his first season but as I said on another thread, I wouldn't like to think how far into the relegation zone we'd be without Troy. Here's our stats for games with/without Troy:

With Troy: W9 D2 L10, 1.38 points per game
Without Troy : W3 D3 L11, 0.71 points per game

Again, like I said on another thread, Troy is a top League 1 player when he plays and if he didn't have Ledley King's knees he'd still be there with Swindon - who he played for a lot last season and got a lot of plaudits for their good run at the end, and who offered him a new deal but on pay-as-you-play due to his injuries - at the very least. Dempsey will win all the end of season awards for us though just because of how much of a revelation he's been, and maybe rightly so.

Considering we've conceded 60+ goals, it seems laughable to think that a central defender has been one of our best players, but when Archibald-Henville plays he's a class above this level. A fairly large percentage of our goals conceded have probably been when Troy's injured or being rested.

I don't think we've had a real standout player all year. Woods has rightly received a lot of credit and has spent most games since Christmas with 2 markers but I for me, he's not been in our top 3. If the below 3 had been fit all year we would have won the league, no doubt imho.

Knight-Percival has been a huge loss, his form was superb most of the season and was our best defender. We've been ropey at the back ever since.
Mangan - Just wish he could stay fit, he's got about 10 goals and probably only started about the same number.
Wesoloswki - Another who's out for the season, supported Woods excellently and we've missed his enthusiasm.

I'd have to agree with the other United fans and say Troy's been our best player, he was always a risk with his knees, and getting a player of that quality at this level wouldn't be possible without taking a risk, but it looks to be paying off, and he seems to be finishing the season strongly.

I really wanted to say Ste Rigg though, it's only his first season of professional football and he won't be as consistent as the more senior players but he's the most enjoyable player in our squad to watch I feel. It's like nobody told him he's only supposed to fill the role of one player on the pitch or that strikers aren't supposed to chase the opposition defenders into our own half to tackle them.

The fact TAH has missed 17 games already is the only reason I never chose him. We already knew he wouldn't feature in every game before the season.

Dempsey has just been so influential for such a young player, and has contributed a lot going forward.

Having said that both have been key this season, and without them we'd probably be relegated already.

Tough one this for a Hartlepool fan, is it the Mansfield fella, or the Cambridge one? Perhaps the one from Scunny? But I think no one can argue if the Reading lad wins the player of the year

If we bundled together each of the best players from each team in this league, alongside whoever the best manager is, I wonder how they'd fare in League 1? Reckon they'd probably be well up there, there's some good players in this league although having said that I watched the JPT yesterday and that Luke Freeman looked a class above, or several for that matter.

Why would Bingham win your player of the year, he only scored like 1 goal?

There are three players for Newport that are currently in close contention in my view: Joe Day, Darren Jones, and Mark Byrne. Hard to choose one from those at present - let's see what the run-in brings...

One of two for us.

Tom Nichols - Homegrown. 14 goals this season. Really has improved throughout. Not only is his finishing good but he's worked hard on his all round game and now links up with the side really well. He will probably be the next player from our youth set up to get a good move for himself. Not quite yet but another season of scoring 15-20 goals and bigger clubs would take notice.

Christian Ribeiro - I know it gets said a lot but he really is a class above those in his position(s) in this league. Released by Scunthorpe in the Summer and was only one of two players we managed to sign before the end of the Summer transfer window. Played the majority of the season at right back where his attacking threat has won us a lot of chances and goals but has recently moved to centre back where he's been brilliant. He's got everything you want. Pace, strength, good in the air, reads the game well. He was an absolute find.

I have to say I'm surprised with all the Troy choices from Carlisle fans. Obviously been hampered with injuries this year but the two times I've watched him play this season he's looked poor and our nippy strikers had given him the run around. Looked nothing like the player who had left us for Swindon.

Crucial goal , linked up well with Fenwick who scored a few before injury, I will come and get Bingham myself and drive him back if you don't want him, oh by the way , he's a striker not a winger

Scott Harrison should win our POTY. Great defender and he's on a permanent deal too. Shock horror.

He'll definitely be a stags player next season, he can play both positions but he was only given to you for fitness anyway.

Maybe, but he's better than anything else we've got, and he still has off days like anyone else. We aren't best equipped all round to deal with nippy strikers and perhaps he would have looked better if he was alongside a quicker defender able to pick up the scraps he's let by.

Yeah he had a poor game at Brunton park against the nippy Clinton Morrison. But he's better than that and was immense for Swindon last season. He'd walk into any team in this league and most in the league above. We're lucky to have him as we'd already be relegated without him.

We haven't had one player who's played well (or played enough games) to be considered player of the season. Richard Money's squad of 40 put paid to that.

I'm sure they'd do well. The step up isn't tiny but I don't think it's that massive either, look at how the teams who went up last year are doing and none of them were exactly stand-outs who pissed the league. I have no doubt that the top players at this level could do very well at the one above. Ours (Nathan Doyle) played there last season with no problems and supposedly had offers from League One and Championship clubs in the summer (which he stupidly rejected hoping for more money only to get left without a club). That Woods fella from Shrewsbury is clearly a class above and attracted interest from the Prem so no reason he couldn't thrive at League One level. McCormick would be a top keeper at League One level I think, he's too good for this division and if he didn't have his history I'm sure he wouldn't be here. I guess the hardest area to make the step up would be strikers; there's no real outstanding ones that I've seen this season. Tubbs is top scorer and he's always prolific at this level, but never performed at League One.

Although that said, I doubt taking the single best player from each team would represent the best squad possible from the players in this division. I'd have at least two from Shrewsbury, for instance (Woods and Knight-Percival).

Well you only have to look at last seasons promoted sides. 3/4 (Chesterfield, Rochdale & Fleetwood) all going for the Play offs.

Here's a tweet from one of our reporters about Troy's performance on Saturday: "If Archibald-Henville was a mutant beast with several dozen feet he still wouldn't have put any of them wrong yesterday. Classy performance." He needs a better centre back to play alongside him, but he'd get that at most other teams at this level and would in turn find the players he comes up against all the more easy. He was in Swindon's team a lot when not injured last season, and I can only assume this was with another alright centre back, and they kept a load of clean sheets if I remember correctly.

For Mansfield - i'd be quite happy to go for Jack Thomas in midfield, not played all season and is still learning the game, but has showed commitment and class that few others in the team have.

Other than that, I can't really think of one - maybe i'd have gone for Ryan Tazafolli a month ago

Definitely Knight-Percival for us. A really classy player and a huge loss for us when he got injured.

Also, Liam Lawrence has become a vital player for us, after a pretty slow/steady start to the season.
