For me Garritys problem is if we were to move away from a three man midfield to a two. He doesn’t have the passing ability to do it in my opinion and it takes away from his game. In a three he’s great as it gives him license to make those late runs into the box and will say for him he has one of the best leaps to get on the end of crosses I’ve seen from a Vale midfielder since we had Van Der Laan.

I think the other to watch will be Pett, I think he is capable but I think he tried step up before with Lincoln and they eventually moved on.
Yeah I think we will stick to 3-5-2 mainly because we have 1000 midfielders!

Hopefully they make the step up, Pett might struggle because he is competing with Walker and potentially Ojo for one spot.

Unusual to have a L1 match thread at page 4 before a ball has even been kicked.

Yeah, James Wilson. He'd easily be one of your best players if he played for you. Touch, vision and skill of a Championship player....just ask Swindon or Mansfield, he led them a merry dance.

I reckon he'll stand out in this league.

That’s a very bold shout. The lad should be coming into his prime and didn’t hit double figures in League Two last season.

No chance he would start over Gregory (16 in 36) and Smith (19 in 45) or a fit Josh Windass.

Big gamble, 17 year old Tommy McDermott starts up front. Pett, Wilson and Massey out so Charlsley in. Big test for the kid

Don’t see it like that at all. He’s clearly earned the right to it with how he’s done in pre-season. DC doesn’t give you 3 year contracts and puts you in the starting lineup unless he thinks you’ll contribute. Looking forward to see what he can do.

Deal, 0-0? Clean sheet and a point isn't a bad start for either!

Maguire is on the bench despite being told he can leave, so that tells you where we're at. No Vernam, House, Mandriou or Walsh, Bishop weirdly on the bench (must have a knock). Three, arguably four, of the starting XI didn't really get much of a sniff last season.

Yeah I know just not used to it! Gibbo must be the last youth starter?

Hoping first day oddness means a fluke win because three points today would be a significant chunk of our season total I expect

Not a great lineup from us today. Playing our RB in CB and we're missing Coutts & Finley from CM.

Gibbo? If so he did have some experience in a back three at RCB and was actually really good. Not sure if you just use a flat back four though. Wouldn’t be too keen on that.

Pretty defensive line up from us, Matt up front by himself isn’t ideal as I doubt he’ll run the channels and Little on the bench means we only really have 1 attacking midfielder on the pitch to support him. Set up for a point.

Been to the mem in three different divisions now.

Not gone today.....Decent starting team but by no means our best
Sheehan still not fit, Dempsey and Toal also missing from the squad........Bench fairly strong with Iredale Sadlier and Bodvarsson unlucky not to be starting

No Stubbs or Matt Jay today, and as expected we have Scott Brown in goal at the age of 83.

Should be an interesting afternoon

Sitting back and playing for counters, but we can’t get keep the ball long enough to create any. Gas not looking great either, but better then us so far.

First ten minutes looked like only Fleetwood had turned up but since then we’ve been the better team and a well deserved lead at half time. Looked good on the ball and have threatened on a pretty consistent basis.

Good first half from Vale, sloppy start conceding a really poor goal in the first 5 minutes but from then on we gained complete control and probed.

Fleetwood look really poor defensively and every ball we put in looks like causing them problems and the pressure told in the end with two goals in a couple of minutes mid way through.

Need to keep it up and not sit back, referee is absolutely useless so need to keep sensible especially Tommy McDermott who in fairness has held his own.

Pretty even game at Lincoln. Bit of exquisite class from Brown and Nombe for our goal. Surprised Matt Jay didnt start, would expect to see him in the second half.

No, Hoole - our RB from last season.

Missed too many people in midfield today and didn’t provide the defence enough cover either.

Ultimately we’re poorer in every 3rd of the pitch than we were at the end of last season and today it has shown.

Poor showing from Burton there.

We started very brightly and should have had a pen early doors, and never really allowed them to settle.

JFH must have given them the hairdryer at half time as they came out a lot better at the beginning of the second half, but by that time we were happy to soak up the pressure, and they didn't have that many clear-cut chances.

Smith was the best player for them, but they're going to have to be a lot better than they were today to get anywhere this season.
