I’m surprised, thought you’d go down a similar route to us and Stockport in getting someone in to build the club structure and playing identity and all of that modern stuff.
The priority for the owners is to get into the football league as soon as possible, which is what Phil Parkinson is here to do. Seems a bit of a coup for this level, but I guess so did Brian Little. At least Parkinson has some relatively recent success on his CV.

4-4-2 route one inbound then down at Wrexham

Listen, it won’t be pretty, but if it’s effective, and it gets the job done and you find yourselves in League 2 come the start of the 22/23 season, who gives a fuck

Best of luck to him

if it means that we sign actual wingers who can run and cross a ball, that will be the most progress this club has seen since we have been in this league

Yes, but there’s an argument to be had over what the best way to do that is. Particularly when there’s one automatic promotion place.

I’d love to see an old fashioned 4-4-2 here again.

I think we'll spend big this season, possibly bigger than anyone else going off the new sponsorships. Parkinson has a huge task ahead of him though as getting a whole new set of players to play together and start winning games is really difficult to do from the off, no matter how good they are. I would say we're bankers for the play-offs but I fancy yourselves or Stockport to win the league based on a familiarity among your players.

Someone like Bromley are going to win the league out of nowhere, we all know this.

From the outside, it feels a bit like an appointment that’s neither one thing or the other. If promotion this year is the be all and end all, then you’d think someone who’s done it previously would make more sense, and you’d presumably have the clout to get one of them. If building up a modern structure, style of play etc and putting yourself in a position where you’re one of the richest clubs in the division and very well run so you’re bound to get promotion soon (this seems to be our strategy), then Parkinson doesn’t really feel right either. It’ll be interesting to see who you sign.

Parkinson has previous in getting clubs promoted from the 2 levels above mind. I don't think there's a world of difference between this level and League 2, especially with how strong this league looks this season. The key difference is the number of promotion spots.

This modern approach that you're speaking of hasn't got a club promoted from this level yet as far as I can tell so I'm not sure how you have come to the conclusion that that's one of the ways to get out of this league. I think a professional setup is far more important, and to aid that we also announced today that we are moving back to the Colliers Park training facility for next season which, since being taken over by the FAW has been turned into a top class facility that wouldn't look out of place in the Championship.

That’s what would worry me. My one lesson since we came down would probably be that draws are pretty useless if you want to win the league and just being difficult to beat isn’t enough.

I would also say that Barrow and Hartlepool, while not the richest, both played very modern, attacking styles of football with relatively young, ‘forward thinking’ coaches (particularly Evatt). Obviously I don’t know much about the teams who went up before we came down.

Parkinson is the greatest manager in our club's history and that season we won promotion from League One was some of the most exciting football we've played. Direct at times, sure, but it was never a dull route one style with us - there was always a lot of pace in attack with a creative central midfield. And, when it's working, I'd sooner have a team that attacks with a directness than one which spends half an hour passing it sideways around the back with clumsy lower-league centre-halves.

I thought this too actually.

Ah well, Parkinson and Parkin have a lot of experience between them. Let's see who they bring in.

I agree, the direct approach gets a lot of flak because it’s not the way the top teams in Europe do it anymore, but when there’s an actual plan behind it then it’s extremely effective. I mean think about it, you’re getting the ball from one end of the pitch to the other, at a rapidly increased speed… so really it’s actually a positive way of playing

The downside to it, is that when it’s ineffective, and there’s no real plan behind it, and your centre halves are just leathering the fooker up the pitch at every given opportunity… there’s genuinely more enjoyment gained from sticking pins into the eyes

Believe me, I’d know from the days of Martin AllenBALL

It’s not so much ‘directness’ as your general approach. We were far more direct under Burchnall than Ardley last season, which is the opposite of what you’d assume. It’s more to do with caution and risk/reward than how long your passes are, IMO.

Personally believe that a Parkinson level appointment at this level is usually a great recipe for disaster

Strange how things work out. Martin Allen's team for us was good, played 4132 and at its best we were dynamic going forwards and defensively pretty sound.
Played direct stuff under Warnock and had a couple of our most exciting seasons ever.
Keith Curle broke the club record for away matches without defeat but crickey it was dull at times.

Think Parkinson with a budget is as close as you're likely to get to guaranteed playoffs and a good chance of finishing first.

Put it this way, we went on a record breaking run without defeat under Allen, was something like 18/19 games…

But during that very same period we also broke the record for most consecutive games WITHOUT a win

Dull doesn’t begin to describe it

I'm more or less focused on the 3 promotions on his CV. No one is guaranteed to be a success down here but he's definitely less risky than your latest hire.

Sunderland fans hate him, but Kevin Phillips aside who don't they hate?
If Undr the Cosh has taught me anything, it's that Parkinson is universally hated by everyone he's managed. Weird appointment that, in my opinion. Will be interesting to see what sort of players he brings in.
Grimsby fans are SHOOK

Bradford fans hate him despite getting them to a league cup final after putting 4 past Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, as well as getting them promoted?

We need to all admit we've been 'triggered' and then things can move on.

I have to correct you there, he’s adored here for all that you’ve listed and more: From 18th in League 2 when he took over to the L1 Play Off’s when he left, FA Cup quarter finalists, League Cup finalists as a L2 team, 4-2 win at Premier League Champions that season Chelsea (from 2-0 down with Mourhino’s then unbeaten home record), numerous Premier league cup scalps, attendances transformed, brilliant team spirit, income at its best in years, the best memories many fans will ever have thanks to Parkinson, he’s a legend here.
Many wanted him back here last season and I had him down as someone who wouldn’t drop to League 2, so to see him in the Conference is unbelievable, Hollywood money or not, maybe that Under the cosh Steve Davies interview and his few seasons at Sunderland have done enough damage to warrant him to take over at this level as without doubt, along with Steve Parkin he’ll take Wrexham up no problem, it won’t be pretty by any means but it will work.
His main critics come from Bolton (who he still took up) and Sunderland, where his hoof didn’t fit for two teams who in my opinion probably thought they were too good for him, but for his time here he had nothing but success.

“Bradford fans hate him”? Either way a brilliant appointment, too good for the league and I’m sure he’ll have another promotion to his CV sooner rather than later.

Wasn’t he referring to players rather than clubs? He’s universally loved by fans of Colchester and Bradford, I would’ve thought.

Think you need to read it all again to see what he’s saying.

There’s no such thing as too good for this league, it’s the hardest league in the world to get out of.
