As nasty a thing as Johnson has done, unlike Ched Evans, he owned up to it. More than anyone can say for Evans, who is still in denial and should've started earning redemption first before earning a footballing contract. And I don't think there's no way back for Johnson.

For an isolated incident (I believe, correct me if I'm wrong) and for someone who isn't routinely attracted to young girls, I'm unsure what a 6 year term is aiming to achieve. I'm getting far too liberal in my old age but I see prison as rehabilitation and not simply a punishment. I don't think he's a danger to society or is likely to re-offend so I think 6 years is harsh.

Still, I'm far from being an expert so what do I know?

I agree with the general sentiment but I imagine the judge is likely to have thought that there's a public policy need to send out a message about the sustained and deliberate grooming of underage persons. And I think this is an important point - as much as it may only have been an isolated incident it's not something that can merely be written off as the result of poor decision making, more a pattern of predatory behaviour in which Johnson quite deliberately and calculatedly groomed a minor for sex (he knew what he was doing was illegal but pursued the girl anyway for his own sexual gratification). I also think it important to recognise the psychological harm that victims of sexual offences often experience. It seems to have been a fairly significant aggravating factor in this case (at least partly because the victim endured some quite unpleasant abuse from members of the public, something the judge felt was exacerbated by Johnson maintaining his innocence up until the day of the trial). I think custodial sentences are inappropriate for a lot of criminal offences and I agree with your point about rehabilitation (it's something we don't do nearly well enough - unfortunately I suspect it's not seen as a funding priority) but, assuming he'll only serve half the time, this sentence seems broadly appropriate to me. And perhaps, given that he seems not to pose a risk to minors, what he needs is not so much rehabilitation but time to dwell on the poor life choices he's made. He's certainly been afforded that.
