Even if there's a blanket ban Australia style, I read that there's 88.8 guns per 100 people in circulation in America. You'd have to have one hell of a long gun amnesty to even make a dent in that.
Bloody hell i knew there are a lot of guns in private hands in America but didn't know it was that staggering amount.

I remember once a discussion with a Texan. He boastfully declared that there was a loaded gun in one in every two cars in the state.
"That's why we don't have no road rage!" he gleefully declared. "Bet ya can't say that about Eng-land!"

I congratulated him on the lack of road rage and asked if this was the reason that the murder rate in Texas was 9 times higher than in Eng-land.

At which point, the conversation changed, as it often does, to why the US of A don't need no "Queen and her crown and shit".

Yup...

But I find it interesting to compare Serbia and Switzerland who have fairly free gun laws with - 69.7 guns per 100 people and 45.7 guns per 100 people respectively - although the later will be higher as it doesn't take into account government issued weapons. Yet their homicide rates /1,000 people with firearms are 0.62 and 0.23 respectively. Then there others, France has 31.2/100 guns and a 0.22/1,000 firearm homicide rate.

Of course it doesn't take into account over what percentage of the population guns are distributed.

The USA has 3.55 homicides/1,000 using guns.

That figure is much higher than other western countries, even when taking into account the slightly higher gun ownership. The USA has a disproportionate amount of firearm related homicides, I have no clue why and browsing journal articles will be my weeks homework. Even if there was a total gun ban, there would still be a crazy amount in circulation and I doubt it would have much of an impact.

Murder rates per 100,000 population
USA - 4.7
UK - 1.0
Italy - 0.9
Netherlands - 0.9
Sweden - 0.7

Think long and hard about the whole US "we need guns to defend ourselves" angle. Seriously? For real? Look at the figures again. You realise that the higher numbers are bad?

European countries (excluding former Soviet states) with a murder rate worse than USA
Greenland - 19.4
Albania - 5.0

Countries in Africa with lower murder rate than USA
Malawi, Sao Tome, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Liberia, Senegal, Sierra Leone
All figures 2012 (some from earlier years)
Wonder what vexed the Greenlanders

Interesting definition of "terrorism" in fairness. Referring to whether you'd consider a white supremacist who secludes himself, reads up on firearms/bombs and keeps journals on his plans for the world, a terrorist. They absolutely are by my reckoning. Still, you can tell what they mean here and it's terrifying given the fear of Islamic extremism how Americans should really treat firearms. Those deaths account for 0.1% of the whole population, and that'd be 200 people in my borough alone. Most Americans must know someone who's been killed by firearms. I myself don't think I've even seen a gun in Britain.

Have we a flag or some other worthless thing to blame it all on.

maybe there was a PE lesson at fault and we should remove Baseball from American society to demand freedom.
What's it got to do with a flag? Are you referring to the confederate flag?

Why don't they just change the entire USA country into some big huge massive Battle Royal game like in that Japan film.....would be a lot easier, feed everyone a weapon and see where it goes.
So your answer to a massacre is to give out more guns? Or as I suspect you're making a crap joke. Would you be as flippant if this had happened in the uk?

This comment isn't aimed at Dave...

there seems to be a strange trend and 'in joke' on this forum about showing compassion when something bad happens to other people. Not something I've ever come across elsewhere. People genuinely seem to take issue at times when sympathy is shown towards victims. Tbh I find that far worse than Dave's comment which I take to be a dig at those in power (and the strange arguments that giving anyone a gun makes a country safer) who aren't doing the obvious to try and prevent these things happening.

You can hope as much as you like Sherrif Bud, but it will happen again and again and again until get your fuckin heads out of your arses and start dealing with the reality of the situation instead of hiding behind the constitution.
What kind of an idiot leaves a loaded shotgun around children?

It is the constitutional right of every American to have guns carelessly lying around for instant and easy use by little kids.

As I suggested in an earlier post, the debate ended several years ago when America decided that the massacre of schoolchildren required no modification of the existing system of access to weaponry. Days after that tragedy - and I have underlined the word 'after' in case anyone has a problem with chronology - more than 50% of Americans did not want any gun controls on assault rifles. The point is that anyone can pretty much do anything they like with guns, and I mean anything they like, going waaaaaay beyond what the most twisted mind can consider, once the massacre of elementary school children elicits the "Nope, I think we've done everything we can to prevent that happening again" response.

America used to be a pretty cool, pretty intelligent, pretty advanced place, but it's now really just Burkino Faso with broadband and lattes.

the vast majority of massacres in recent years have been committed with handguns, as well as the overwhelming majority of murders overall. go for another assault weapon ban but it's not the issue really, it's a nice red line to draw and makes an easy PR campaign, but you have to go for handgun legislation if u want real change, which is a lot trickier. how do u limit deaths by pistol without attacking the constitution? u make guns harder to acquire legally. u make background tests a lot stricter, u imprison those who skirt the background checks, store and consumer. u offer federally-subsidised gun amnestys or toys 4 guns or whatever. more importantly u import giuliani's broken window approach, u put money into the inner cities, u stop shooting young black folk and u remove as much of the narcotic industry that's driving organised crime in the u.s. u legalise weed duh. u don't need legislation as much as poverty eradication to bring down crime. u need to present opportunities, and u need to work on improving people's stake in their community and country by not attacking their culture. there are simple things u can do to bring down guncrime. work on federal/state law enforcement co-operation. my mate left the courthouse he was on bail at just after failing a drug test, drove a couple states over got on a plane and flew to china. there's no communication between law enforcement divisions and no coherent approach. deal with poverty, deal with communication and u don't necessarily need to attack an inalienable right (too much)
