We've discussed it before but today our parliament is debating this for the first time in 20 years.
Thoughts?

Been rejected quite comfortably by parliament.

Personally think it should have been approved. After seeing family go through situations I'd hate to see myself in near to their end I'd welcome the choice to not have to go through it.

We have a do not resuscitate option, so we should have a right to end our lives painlessly if life itself becomes too painful. I know theres a difference between DNR and assisted dying but in both situations the individual would have chosen that medical intervention to continue living is not what they want.

Totally agree with this. With appropriate safeguarding it should be a person's choice if they want to end their own suffering.

It's not getting much of a response is it? I thought people would be dying to discuss this.

If regulated and monitored correctly I don't see the problem. Nobody wants to linger on and on deteriorating further.

Basically this. The safeguards need to be robust, but it's downright cruel to force someone continue with a life they can't stand living.

But it's far easier to just say no than to do all the work it would require if you said yes.

Such is life.

Or death in this instance.

My gran is in this predicament now. She was independent till the age of 98 and things started to get on top of her. My sis and myself would alternately do her chores and get messages for her etc, then she had a fall and has eventually had to be put in a home as neither of us are in a position for her to be taken in with us (and tbh it would be too much for us all anyway unfortunately ).

She has been in a home for a year now and is now 101, saw her son die in February and has to have everything done for her now. She is still sharp in the mind which makes it even worse to an extent and she just wants away. However she has good genes and a healthy heart so from that pov she isn't going anywhere. It's sad seeing her fade like this. I'm not saying assisted suicide would be correct in this example but she is losing her dignity now. You wouldn't let an animal suffer like that.

It's such a shame that the no vote was successful. At the very least terminally ill people should have the right to decide when and how they die.

Why should people be forced to lay in bed and pumped full of morphine and countless other drugs against their own wishes? It makes no sense at all and is quite simply abuse. It's disgusting that people have to travel away from their home and family so they can die how they want.

I appreciate that some people worry it will be manipulated but as Alty said the conditions would have to robust and monitored correctly.

It's another example of how this country is stuck in it's ways while more progressive countries move ahead.

Its weird Natch though as usually its a case of the general public being set in their ways or at least their is a decent amount of opposition. With assisted dying this really doesn't seem to be the case in my experience.

I was going to say in my last post that I don't personally know anyone who is against assisted dying.

Obviously the religious groups are against it and also there are a few disability groups that worry what it means for people they work with.

I haven't seen how my MP voted yet but I hope she at least voted and didn't abstain.

I was thinking earlier it would be better if more things were put to a referendum, it would be interestig to see what the outcome would be on this.

We had the vote for it up here this year too and it also failed. You think those who vote against it haven't seen a loved one in pain.

I think that a lot of politicians worry about how they are going to be perceived when voting for issues such as this . Any right thinking human being can see that making somebody suffer on against their wishes is barbaric but politicians , being slimy bastards for the most part are worried about being targeted by religious groups or painted as heartless for allowing assisted suicide . We see that as an oxymoron but many MPs don't want to rock the boat in fear of losing their poxy privelages and status . Gutless and pathetic imo .

In the Commons they are also probably told by the whip the party line on it and to do as they are told otherwise the other things they want won't be achieved. The prose some of them use though like 'killing' makes it sound abhorrent. Bunch of tossers the majority of them.

This is when religion really starts to annoy me. I dont care that you're religious, but please don't impose your values on me. Just because assisted suicide would be legal doesn't mean we're now going to force you to use AS.

The language used is extremely provocative and designed to scare , issues such as this should always be given a free vote in the commons but unfortunately leading members of political parties seek to make political capital out of ( let's be honest here ) people's suffering .

Absolutely and it shows the worst side of politics.

Your absolutely right and it just shows that even now the separation between church and state is negligible . I Think many people who would consider themselves religious can also support AS but as in many issues eg gay marriage , religious leaders are decades of not centuries behind most of their followers .

I wholeheartedly agree with the principle of assisted suicide in certain circumstances.

Equally I recognise how tricky it would be to implement, and how difficult it would be to monitor. It's one thing saying safeguards would need to be robust, it's another entirely to ensure that this is actually the case.

Too many politicians seem keen to take the easy/safe route and just dismiss this out of hand because they know how problematic a task it would prove to be.

It's a shame, but I'm not sure I can ever see there being enough politicians willing to stick their neck on the line and follow through with this. Most are too concerned with self-preservation than doing the right thing for the wider majority of people.

How people can evolve to unimposing their morality on homosexuality yet impose morality on people that are physically suffering amazes me.

forcing someone to live is as bad as, in certain circumstances, forcing someone to die

Just another example of the political elite having no interest in representing the people they were elected to represent. In a functioning democracy when 82% of the public support something then it should be fairly cut and dry.

There's gotta be a way of linking the two so we can kill 2 (dying) birds with one (merciful) stone.
