Shock of the year as Awford doesn't last the season as Pompey boss, pretty sure everyone realised that he wasn't the right man for the job.

Who next for Pompey?

You would expect they could entice a league 1 level boss. With their budget next season automatic promotion should be the only target.

I'd like to see Warburton down there if he fancied a challenge, although Gary Waddock is the early bookies favourite....

The problem is I think they look for the right man in the long term, but I think for a big club like that they just need someone for the short-term, the dogged, horrid type of manager theirs fans won't really want for more than a season or two, but one who frankly knows how to get them out

I'd still said Martin Allen, its not an easy job a big club down these levels, a lot struggle to get out, Leeds, Forest, Wednesday, Sheff Utd, or in Conf Oxford, Luton, etc etc you have the money, the budget, the quality players but seem to need that gritty fight and passion.

Even maybe Still, I know its gone abit wrong at Luton but I'd think you shove the budget at home, he'd add the aspects to get you out.

Waddock is shit just ask Oxford fans after last seaseon, he joined them just outside the play offs and thwen lost 9 out of 10 games i think it was.Got us relegated twice as well with a promotion between i admit but we went up despite him not because of him.

I'm surprised at the timing of it all. There seems to be no point in him going now with just four games left unless they have someone lined up, which it seems they don't given that Waddock has the job temporarily. And I really hope it is temporarily as he's not someone I'd want in for good given his track record.

Looking at the possible names to replace him, some of them absolutely fill me with dread. Gary Megson, Danny Wilson and Brian Laws are not men I'd want to see in charge but I'd still take any of them over Harry Redknapp who is currently the bookies' favourite. I have no idea who I'd want, someone like Mark Warburton or Uwe Rosler but I'm not sure if they'd fancy it.

Surely Warburton is way out of Pompeys reach, he could possibly be getting a team promoted to the Premier League (then leaving which is shocking). I would of thought someone like Tisdale would get a mention, you want someone proven, but at the same time I hate all the same names getting mentioned

And most of them are unemployed for a good reason - They're crap and keep getting sacked so what's the point of giving them a job then having to pay up their contract when the inevitable happens again?

I can assure you there is no one within the club and an absolute minority of supporters that would want rid of John Still. IMO, he's one of the best managers in the lower divisions. He has I think 7-8 promotions on his CV. He has a proven track record of bringing through young, hungry, talented players. He, last season, managed to bring the club together at a time where the supporters were constantly on edge. He said the right things, at the right times. There was no bullshit - just honesty, integrity and a passion to succeed.

And there's absolutely no chance of him leaving for Portsmouth either, for the record.

Still has also stated numerous times that he is not a short term manager. So the reasoning put forth in the post, the need for a short term manger to pull them out of the league, doesn't match up with Still at all.

To be honest, we had some dire performances under Waddock (2 delicious 6-0 defeats LIVE!!!!! on Sky to Hudds) and he had a shit eye for a player.

I would say if a manager has a 70/30 good/shite signing record they're doing all right.

Waddock probably had a 50/50 record, if that.

BUT - 2 promotions (with us and Aldershot). It just isn't that easy to do - what's the % of managers that have managed even this?

I don't see why it has to be some one experienced, look at my club, we have started the careers of Neil Warnock, Nigel Clough, Gary Rowett and now Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. The only appointment that didn't work out was Paul Peschesolido.
Some one looking to prove himself in management with ambition would be a good fit at Pompey, you may only get them for 2 or 3 seasons but it can set the club in the right direction for the future.
Surely there is an ex pro out there of the right calibre, are the club brave enough to find such a candidate ?

We've gotta go experienced imo, we've tried two inexperienced in Whittingham and Awford and neither has worked out so we just can't take the risk.

We need a name that will get the fans buzzing again, we're quite a fickle bunch.

You make a very good point but I think there is a difference to a Burton, especially in the FL, to a Portsmouth in the respect that...

A: you have no demanding fanbase who expect promotion and will give the new guy time to settle down and build

B: You are not the side which other clubs 'raise their game' for. Portsmouth have to dogfight their way out of this league till at a level when sides play against them than treat it as biggest game of season.

that is why I think sometimes these clubs need a manager with good experience to battle their way out.

SSN saying they are looking at Phil Brown. This job would definitely interest him think he would jump at the chance if he got offered it. I bet he is already picturing himself all over the media as the man to get Pompey back up the leagues

I take your point there. I would have thought Pompey would be able to attract someone of high profile. We shall see.

I mentioned Warburton as I think if you view Portsmouth as a project, as a club that could eventually be taken back up league by league to the top, the for me it feels like a great fit. I'm looking at it from the perspective of a Portsmouth fan, as a fellow League Two supporter I don't want him to go there (and don't think he will), as I reckon he'd be a great appointment.

I think whoever Pompey appoint you want someone long term, as I said above, I'd view it as a project.

It's coz the local meeja have come out and said that Brown would interest the chairman. I could think of worse candidates than him, but if he takes Southend up I can't see him wanting to drop down a division, even for us.

As said before, we can't do long-term if it means staying in this division for another season. The "novelty" has well and truly worn off and the fans are fed up with it now. We have to get in someone who can get us out of League Two with a view to getting out of League One too.

He's out of contract in the summer which is why I really think this does have legs. If we don't go up I'd be surprised if it didn't happen

If Redknapp is appointed then it will be Paolo Di Canio all over again. Never have I see the media define an entire division as 'the one that XXX manages in' more than when Di Canio was Swindon manager. Watched them in the JPT final and the cameras were more interested in what PDC was doing on the touchline than in whatever might have been going on on the pitch.

But also I don't think Redknapp knows how to get out of the lower leagues. He might have managed Bournemouth once, but that was before the invention of crossbars and the introduction of the offside rule, things have changed. He'll sign Niko Kranjcar and that'll be job done.
