Yeah, suffering from regular bouts of insomnia helps when you enjoy American sports.

Great month January with some significant records..

Klay Thompson scoring 37pts in a single period, while yesterday Irving scored 55pts against Blazers with 11 3pts made..

Oh didn't notice..If there is a mod watching,delete please..

The sub-forums are less obvious on this forum compared to the old TFF. I always forget they're there. Wonder if the lads upstairs can change owt layout/style wise to make them a bit more conspicuous.

Been getting back into NBA a bit. Houston are my boys (used to have an Olajuwon jersey). Currently beating The Celtics, who are defending really badly.
Who are all your favourite teams? And who do you like the look of this season? Besides Atlanta, obviously.

I chose the Knicks as my team but that was before the season even started so I'm calling schoolboy error on that one.

I've enjoyed watching the Rockets, Clippers and Bulls so far. Hawks are tearing shit up though along with GS.

Also as a newbie to the NBA but coming from an NFL background wtf is the deal with having the all-star stuff mid-season?

Not sure to be honest, I know it's a full on weekend event though. Is that the same in the NFL?

The Knicks have one of the coolest logos at least, so you're winning on that front.

Boston pulling it back here, but their crowd is flat.

Nah it's just the all-star game really, gotta say I'm looking forward to the slam dunk contest though.

My boss is a Celtics fan, he couldn't be more Irish unless he was Irish (he's Scottish).

Haha, yeah that's kind of the equivalent of the who can hit the puck the hardest thing in the NHL all-star game too. Come to think of that, I think that might have just been on mid-season too, as I saw a few things on Facebook that people had posted.

Ah Ice Hockey, there's another sport I've been getting into lately.

You still in Korea SoC? what are the prevalent sports over there?

Yeah, still in Korea. In terms of Korean leagues, then baseball is by far the most popular. MLB is popular too, a huge reason being Ryu Hyun-jin at the LA Dodgers. La Liga, The Premier League and MLB are definitely the most popular foreign sports leagues. I don't really like baseball, but it's a lot of fun to watch in Korea. Everyone just gets drunk and eats fried chicken and they do things like typing plastic bags on their heads to rally their teams when they're losing.

In addition, anything that they're good at at The Olympics (all the ones were you aim at target, dancing on ice and martial arts) gets a lot of media coverage. The football league, The K-League, is poor. I go watch FC Seoul a bit and it's probably around League 1 level. There are also Korean basketball and ice hockey leagues but they're not big time at all.

The NHL all-star skills competition is worth a Youtube if you wanna watch some fun ice hockey. I've got a Canadian co-worker at the moment who is a mad keen Edmonton Oilers fan, so I've been getting forced to watch a bit recently.

93-87 to the Rockets today. Had a big lead after the second quarter and it looked like Boston were gonna come back. Good win for Houston without Dwight Howard.

This Mavs-Heat game is shaping up to be the worst game I've watched this season in terms of scoring, but to be fair they've both been so shit it's actually quite an entertaining close game.

As long as there's less than a 10 point gap, I feel like most basketball 4th quarters are entertaining. I'm definitely no kind of authority on these matters, though.

NBA All Star Game is derived from the MLB version, which was the original mid-season show piece. Provides a festive occasion and something of exhale point during a never-ending slog of a season.

Important also to understand the context in which these games originated (especially MLB), ie pre-TV & other mass media saturation. A star player who played on the opposite coast (or in the other league in the pre-interleague MLB), may as well have been a mythical creature; mentioned in dispatches, but seldom glimpsed and genuinely remote. Accordingly having all the great and the good gathered in one venue for a day was a big deal publicity wise. That was important for the NBA since it wasn't exactly a thriving media property in its youth (finals weren't nationally televised in full until 1970, and they had tape delayed finals games as late as the early 80s (!) ). Having that buzz come after the season would have been a bit of a wasted opportunity.

The NFL, with its short season/scarcity of product, pseudo-martial routines and catastrophic injuries every 5 minutes followed another model, and I suspect the precedence of post-season bowl and all-star games at the collegiate (and even high school) level was influential there also.

Took me a while to find this forum again... anyway not sure if its been discussed but some of of the all star selections (namely melo and kobe as starters) were scandalous. More emphasis needs to be put on All-NBA selections.

Does it? It's an exercise in fun. A popularity contest in a star orientated league. If people want to see a 39 year old Shaq trying to play point guard then more power to them, cos we get serious basketball the other 150 nights of the year. It's not MLB where the wurmy corpse of Derek Jeter ends up determining home field advantage for the World Series.

Was a pretty good game for the most part. Also had the Nuggets-Celtics game on stream, that was a great game.

Clippers @ Cavs tonight Craig.

I feel bad now.

What's worse: Rick Barnes' current coaching performance OR "a bone marrow aspirate injection"?
