I didn't go to Watford, but by all accounts it was a vast improvement on the Stoke fiasco. A clean sheet and several good chances created, another point towards safety, and the huge positive of Maxi Gradel getting 75 minutes after over 6 months out. He must be knackered now though so I assume we won't see much of him.

Southampton of course is another kettle of fish, and on pretty much every occasion in recent years we've completely frozen, been poor and been fairly soundly beaten. Can we at least give a good account of ourselves? Granted the second half at St Marys was good, but it meant little when we were already 2-0 down!

It must be said - we were in a complete mess back then with injuries, we're far more settled and far more organised now. Saints should expect a better Bournemouth side tomorrow. But by the same token, Saints have been largely solid and winning for a while now, and will be frustrated by their second half capitulation at the weekend. So they'll come out with a point to prove as well.

Newcastle on Saturday is a bigger game in reality, but emotionally we will inevitably put a lot into this, perhaps even at the detriment to Saturday.

We have been better away and worse at home all season. So anything we can get tomorrow is bonus, but lets at least give them something to worry about.

About as a guaranteed a loss as you can get this season. I would even take the decision to rest Gradel ahead of some pretty season defining games against Newcastle and Swansea.

As Mark says we'll be better than in October when we were at our lowest point, both in terms of injuries and form. It was actually the second half of that game that Eddie created his new plan and a few previously peripheral players really started to step up after that.

Pelle will score a header (As inevitable as the sun coming up tomorrow morning), we'll huff and puff before someone like Shane Long or Mane adds a second. Afobe is someone who really needs to step up if we're to get anything tomorrow, desperately poor against Arsenal, Stoke and Watford. The guy thrives off good service, but even his hold up play and passing was woeful on Saturday.

Shame that Long looks doubtful and we'll probably start with Pelle up top.

I would agree that the sensible hard headed thing to do is not involve Gradel at all tomorrow and save him for Newcastle.
But you can bet anything that if and when we are behind in the second half, the entire ground will be crying out for him.

Ideally we don't really want Afobe to have to hold the ball up too often. He only ends up having to do that when our midfield is suffering and a vast space opens up between Afobe and the rest of the side. And when that happens, we look crap.

When we're doing well, and Afobe looks ace, is when our midfield can attack. Getting one or two players around Afobe to link up, put the balls into Afobe's feet to run onto, and suddenly he looks an absolute gem of a player.

It's all about whether the midfield can sufficiently assert itself (if we play 5). OR we risk being lighter in midfield and have someone alongside Afobe like Josh King.

Don't get why you're so sure Pelle will score. Don't think he has scored since his goal against you. He's been awful since coming back from injury.

Hope we go with Austin and Mane up top.

I can see us losing this one anyway.

Because centre forwards who are good in the air are the worst type of forward for us to defend against, we just can't do it for 90 minutes without giving them at least a couple of free headers at goal. That's why PDS (and I) are far from alone in assuming that Pelle will cause us all sorts of havoc.

Austin can do a bit of everything, and given his connections to AFCB you could make a case for him being bound to score also!

We'll need Surman and Arter at their absolute best to cut off the supply and keep our midfield in the ascendance as much as they can. That's the key for us, and it's a big ask.

Criteria:
Is he over 5ft 8? Yes
Has he scored a header before? Yes
Is he in bad form and needs something to reignite his season? Yes

Guaranteed goal. We're specialists at re-starting stuttering personal seasons to add to our inability to win headers.

Can't say Bournemouth haven't deserved the lead so far, they've been good but we're not exactly making it hard for them.

Forster at fault for another goal.

This has been our worst performance of the season.

Thank fuck that's over. A fully deserved win for Bournemouth. That Austin sitter aside, we offered nothing upfront.

I hope you Bournemouth lot aren't expecting any favours from us on Saturday, I can see Sunderland getting something!

Fucking hell
Priceless evacuation of the away end, that was immensely enjoyable.
Saints were poor, no cutting edge at all, and it was rather easy to get in behind.
Wow

Too busy celebrating with my mates and missed my train
Oh well, half hour or so to wait.
All the saints fans have legged it back, would have thought they'd be here too but it's pretty empty.
Ah well, safe trip home all.

Well that was wholly unexpected. Excellent performance at times, we were faster, fitter and just better all over the pitch.

Ritchie, Cook and Surman were a cut above. This takes the pressure off us ahead of Newcastle and Swansea in our next two games

I have to applaud Howe in going for it with 4-4-2. Most managers entering the run in of a relegation battle get more conservative. We just go for it.

Josh King gets better and better, he's such a nuisance and won't let the opposition have any peace.

Matt Ritchie has had quite a quiet season but boy was he on it last night. Him on one flank and Daniels on the other owed those areas of the pitch, and forced Saints into changing from their wing back system into two banks of four, after about 35 minutes, to try and combat us. That speaks volumes for the way Howe set us up and the effort our players put in.

But I was just very, very surprised how poor Saints were and that ahs to be taken into account when appraising our performance. Clearly a bad night for them.

Tbf Mark your lot suffocated us.

Oh well, you lot should stay up now which is good. Hopefully Brighton can join us up here. The more local games, the better.
