I imagine the main point of interest in these matches will be the attendances, and who can get lowest. If our boycott holds firm (and the local newspaper have just written an article sympathetic to it) then Carlisle v Blackburn U21 could be pretty low as Blackburn fans are currently in the process of boycotting their club anyway.
The other thing to look out for is the results. I'm not sure what people think will be best in terms of proving how ruinous allowing B-teams into proper competitions would be.
On the one hand, since the whole idea behind the competition is that it will be beneficial to the development of future England internationals (who it is presumed will be playing for the likes of Blackburn and Reading U21s) the best results would be if the U21 teams get smashed off the park by embarrassing scorelines with no possible benefit to their development whatsoever.
On the other hand, part of the idea was that apparently the cup was in need of revitalisation. The Football League chief Shaun Harvey has already shown himself up to be absolutely clueless in saying the prospect of the final being contested by two academy teams is "probably one of the biggest concerns we have" (seriously, he's inviting teams to join the competition with his fingers crossed behind his back hoping that they don't reach the final) http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/36902612 So maybe it would be for the best that the final does get played between Blackburn U21 and Reading U21 (with all due respect to Blackburn and Reading) in front of about 200 people.
So, this week's games are as follows (those involving L2 teams)
I was going to underline academy sides but none of us are playing them in this round of fixtures, not sure if that's by design, but I'm also surprised at the amount of all-L2 ties, not least because we don't have any other L2 teams in our group, so fairness clearly isn't a priority.
Bury v Morecambe
Gillingham v Luton
Accrington v Crewe
Blackpool v Cheltenham
Crawley v Colchester
Leyton Orient v Stevenage
MK Dons v Barnet
Mansfield v Doncaster
Northampton v Wycombe
Oldham v Carlisle
Oxford v Exeter
Plymouth v Newport
Shrewsbury v Cambridge
Walsall v Grimsby
Yeovil v Portsmouth
Notts County v Hartlepool
