Good, to be frank. The CCTV from outside/inside the hotel makes the conviction appear ludicrous IMO. How the jury managed to reach a verdict that was 'beyond reasonable doubt' is beyond me.

------

The footballer Ched Evans is to have his rape conviction reviewed by the Court of Appeal.

The Wales football international was jailed for five years in 2012 after being found guilty of raping a 19-year-old woman at a hotel near Rhyl.

Evans, 26, was released last year after serving half of his sentence.

The Criminal Cases Review Commission referred the conviction after his lawyers lodged fresh evidence.

The former Sheffield United footballer has always maintained his innocence but his attempts to restart his career with Oldham Athletic and his former club collapsed in the face of a public outcry.

To be fair, I'm on the same side of the fence as you. The sad thing is that even if he wins his appeal, he'll struggle to get back to the levels he was before this whole thing came up.

Whether it's overturned or not, the behaviour of some of his supporters towards the victim (which by legal definition she still is) has been fucking shameful. But Evans himself has always maintained his innocence, if not his dignity.

He will be owed an absolutely huge compensation package should it be overturned. Should it get overturned then surely he will only be ending up at one place.

Disagree? With the information that's now publicly available a betting man would say the conviction will most likely be overturned.

Nah, it's bizarre, his defence is basically built on the fact that if a drunk girl goes back with your mate then she's obviously gagging for it with you too. In some ways, he's not appealing his conviction but also the definition of rape. The idea that he snuck into a room with an already naked girl and had sex with her because she was pissed but not that pissed is, frankly, repulsive.

Will his lawyers get it overturned, dunno, maybe, but it won't be on any revelation and case-changing. He's still forced himself onto a drunk girl who has subsequently had to change her identity 6 times...but hey, some toxicology report said she wasn't drunk enough to be suffering from memory loss and come on lads she's hardly paralytic just stumbling about a bit so #JusticeForChed

Curzon Ashton....and Carlisle
Innocent in regards to fact he never did anything at all and is therefore innocent or innocent in regards the fact that he did a lot of wrong things, but they can use most legal aspects of the law to make it tough to prove it as fact.

He hardly deserves much of a let off regardless, he could easily have just kept his pants on.....then he'd not needed to worry about it.

I agree with Ravens post above, the only sympathy I have for him is other footballers have done similar and just seemed able to get away with it as its very hard to prove as legal fact.

It gives rape apologists who weren't in court and don't understand the case another chance to push their agenda.

If more evidence has arrived that could clear him why shouldn't it be heard in court? He went to prison on the evidence availiable at the time in a court and if he's cleared then it will show mistakes were made. If they don't change the verdict that should be the end of the matter though.

He's also had two previous appeals rejected based on evidence at that time too. This is basically their 4th attempt at trying to produce something that proves he's not a rapist - put me down as skeptical.

I wonder what kind of compensation he'd be able to claim if the ruling is overturned. Hypothetically he'd be an innocent man that's wrongly had his name and reputation smeared, costing him lucrative contracts.

Apparently we've ended all chance of him playing for us again, us backing down really annoyed him. Or so the rumour goes.

Whatever the outcome I hope it puts an end to the endless discussions. For selfish reasons I hope he is innocent, those being people using giant leaps to assume I support a rapist purely based on the SUFC connection, apparently I should've disowned the club according to some. Obviously I hope justice is done, to whatever extent it can be done, most though.

I wouldn't bet on it. There are plenty of examples of convictions being overturned which haven't resulted in a penny for the person convicted. Look at Barry George for an example.

I've just looked that up and the reason George hasn't been compensated is "he's not innocent enough." Regardless what anyone may think of George that's an outrageous and dangerous precedent to set.

I very much doubt he would turn the offer down to play for us again if it came about.

How long has he been out now, 4 years? Wouldn't surprise me if he were innocent that Phipps would try and make a statement and bring him back given the stick he and the club got last year, to be honest. However I cant see him being any good now...or what we need. Anyway lets worry about that if his conviction is overturned.

We can never be certain that what he did was actually rape her. However, he definitely isn't innocent as he's had sex with the girl without permission. Even though he might not have intended to 'rape' her as he just believes it's casual sex, it was just a ridiculous thing to do and he's brought the whole thing on himself. It was interesting that nothing more was done to Clayton MacDonald when he was the person inviting Ched over. Even if it is overturned, I don't think it changes anything about what he did so I won't judge him any different.

No offence but you seem incredibly misguided. You come across as if you're absolutely certain of his guilt and if you were familiar with the entire case (and the new reasons why it's been referred to the court of appeal) that would be a very difficult opinion to maintain without just blindly jumping on the media bandwagon.

I never thought Evans was innocent and the initial verdict seemed sound to me after seeing the evidence in the public domain.

However, well under 5% of cases put before the CCRC are taken to the Court of Appeal, they don't make a decision like that frivolously.

Very interested to see what this new evidence entails.

Fucking hell mate.

Seriously, fucking hell. You've literally based your opinion on a CCTV snippet, 'misguided'. I've read the court files by the way, he's a rapist - the only way that changes is if the girl comes out and says 'nah, my bad, I made it all up' which I'm guessing would've happened sometime between the 1st and 6th times she had to change her identity.

I mean, the bloke actually admitted it. His story is akin to me going 'yeah so, I got the gun right and I shot him in the head.....wait, that's not murder is it?'

Correct.

Evans is a piece of shit. As are the people who've done their utmost to ruin the victim's life over the past few years.

The people who have tried to ruin her life really are pieces of shit. All of us have different opinions on ched and none of us actually know what occurred in that hotel room that night do we. Only those that were there do
