We're pretty much on our holidays now, so we'll either relax and tonk someone, or go all meh. Doubt we'll see any movement in or out before the loan deadline.

Are we expecting a Walsall backlash from their Wembley defeat or are they on their holidays too?

Need to win, got some mates coming up from Birmingham...not Walsall fans though!

As an insurance policy i'm taking the boy who's never seen us lose at home.

Walsall are looking below them at the moment, so I dont think they'll be in holiday mode.
Couldn't have said it better myself Hurrikeen! We have been utter cack this season and a Wembley appearance has been papering over the cracks for quite a while (and look what happened there!). Slow, predictable and boring football with no definitive Plan A never mind a Plan B. A lot of fans wont like to admit it but I think we are heading towards a relegation scrap and if we get ourselves to that point I don't see us having the personnel to get out of it. Hopefully, a P45 for Deano at the end of the season and lets try and move the club forwards once again.

NEED a win here to try and get over the Wembley farce and give us a bit of a safety zone. Hope they prove me wrong but dont see a 'backlash' in this game but 11 players with heads down and completely devoid of confidence.

It will be my first trip to Chesterfield. I'll be traveling in hope more than expectation......but stranger things have happened.

Ah, I had Walsall and above as just about safe, with those below them in danger.

Got tickets this morning, new ground to tick off!

I imagine we'll come out the blocks firing, we usually do after a disappointing performance. One downside is Sawyers is out on international duty (downside to some, a blessing to others). We'll play Grimes in the hole instead who has been surprisingly good the past few appearances.

I'll be wearing my lucky buttplug for this one. We've never lost a game when it's been up my arse.

Will be my first trip if I'm feeling 100% better. We have become stagnant, slow, lacking in confidence and about 4 of our key players are playing with injections/injuries or aren't quite fully fit. Sawyers away finally gives Smith the chance to play with Hiwula and Bradshaw together, not sure he will though. I'm expecting an absolute spanking if Chesterfield even half bother to turn up.

Come on, Saddlers; Bristol are where they are for a reason and two-nil wasn't too bad under the circumstances.

Though it's galling to think that all those tens of thousands who suddenly became Walsall fans for a day will crawl back into the woodwork (aka Molineux, The Hawthorns, Villa Park or St Andrews) with only a negative memory, I guess.

That's not an insult, by the way - we learned many years ago that twenty-plus thousand 'lifelong Spireites' demanding semi final or Wembley tickets can quickly find other things to do on a Saturday afternoon.

Anyway, it's a coin-toss whether the team believe the play offs are still an option or have Benidorm on their minds (hey - they're only third division players, y'know).

The 'daytripper fans' is just part and parcel of football and the same at most clubs so no problems there. Any negativity from Walsall fans doesn't just stem from the Bristol City game. Every Walsall fan that went pretty much expected to lose but it was the laboured and dull performance without the attempt to compete that was hard to take. The game Sunday was just a summary of how we have been playing for quite a few months bar a couple of decent away wins. Every opposition fan has said the same about us this season......'walsall are a fairly tidy side on the ball. Just no end product up front'.

For me, Smith has been found out this season and has served us up with one of the dullest seasons in a long time. We all know we are on a pathetic budget which instantly puts limitations on us but his stubbornness to play 1 up top both home and away has cost us dearly. On the occasion he has changed it he has picked the wrong games or personnel for it and has consistently got team selection wrong. The excuses have been comical as well. Apparently it was too snowy on boxing day, too windy at barnsley and the pitch was too rough at Bradford. Our away form has just about kept our heads above water this season as the only games we play well are where the opposition comes at us to open the game up. If/when we go behind or are playing against 2 solid banks of 4 there is no chance we will score. I'll be going tomorrow as we are occasionally decent on the road so fingers crossed. .

Cheer up mate! Dont understand why you want Deano to have his "P45", he has had us punching well above our weight as playoff outsiders for a while now and (as has been said many times) getting to wembley for the first time in our 127 year history was an amazing achievement, He is sensible, young and loyal, and on the "pathetic" budget he has, his recruitment has been excellent: Bradshaw has been excellent, O'Connor's not been great but Forde and Cook have been promising, if a little inconsistent. That's exactly what we've been as well, promising but inconsistent, and going by that then a new manager is probably one of the worst decisions the board could make. Yes we're being dragged into a relegation battle, but we play good stuff and if we can keep most of our reasonably young side for next season (rather than releasing the number of players we did at the start of this season) while adding to it with a centre back who isnt an instant weakness for us (aerially), some pace on the wings and a clinical and maybe big striker then we can truly push for the play-offs. Consistency is really our only issue and I believe (as you should) that Deano is perfect for us. And anyway, I cant really think of anyone who would do a better job than him on the budget he has at Walsall.

Hello mate and welcome to the forum. Nice to have another saddler along. Good post, I like the thought and sentiment behind it but a couple of quick questions:
- can you define 'we play good stuff'?
- Do you hand on heart feel as if you have had value for money this season and have been 'entertained', win, lose or draw?

When my expectations are low we tend to win. With that in mind it should be three points.

Well, we knock it around quite nicely on the floor and some of our moves can be a joy to watch (eg Sawyers goal v Bristol City in October). Im not really defending the way weve played this season, but I think that the future is bright, so long as we dont go down which is becoming increasingly more likely. I agree that particularly our home form has been abismal, but there's also evidence that we can perform away from home (3-0 win away at MK, 2-0 win away at Preston). This season has definitely been disappointing (apart from our cup run) and no I dont think that weve had value for money but I still maintain that we're just a few players short of a playoff push.

We are down. £20 at 20/1 yesterday for us to go down. Get in. Perfectly good players there, ruined by a lack of confidence and a focus on Wembley.

Yep, it was a nailed on 0-0 game, i don't remember either keeper having a meaningful save to make, and then amazingly, out of nowhere and taking into account our awful set-piece "routine", we scored from a corner. As far as late winners go though , it was pretty low key

We lost last week and shouldn't have and today you couldn't have seen us scoring had it been played until midnight yet we won, as Paul Cook would say, that's football.

Christ that was dull.

Fully deserved 3 points though on the basis that we were at least prepared to venture over the half way line.

That 90 minutes does not deserve anything like a match report other than to say it was an absolute utter steaming pile of shite. Oh well we move on to our next defeat.
