I know this has been done before but I do believe it was last season when we did this. I feel quite a few clubs in this league are quite interchangeable with not a lot of difference in size between them. For example, Shrewsbury, Colchester and Us are quite similar in size.

My list

Sheff United
Bradford
Coventry
Wigan
Barnsley
Millwall
Blackpool
Swindon
Oldham
Gillingham
Port Vale
Peterborough
Chesterfield
Doncaster
Southend
Walsall
Bury
Crewe
Colchester
Shrewsbury
Scunthorpe
Rochdale
Burton
Fleetwood

They're certainly not, Bradford are historically a third tiered club whereas Coventry have spent most more years in the top flight than any other division.

Wigan at 4th is slightly questionable as well. They've only been a league club for 30 years.

Would say Sheffield United then a big gap. Coventry 2nd with Bradford/Millwall following. Then there's the rest with Fleetwood the smallest.

Didn't you say before that we are historically a bigger club than Coventry?

- Last club in the league to win a major domestic cup
-Last club in the league to be in the Premier League
-Were in the Premier League for 8 years (only two other clubs in this league have been in it in that time frame)
- Have about the 5th or 6th highest average attendance in this league.
-Often travel in large numbers

I said we're potentially a bigger club than Coventry to DH84, how could we be bigger historically? We've never won anything major.

Erm..

My Dad's mate who is a Leeds fan reckons that we are on a par with Sheffield United in terms of club size, excluding home averages.

IMO -

1 - Sheff Utd
2 - Bristol City
3 - Coventry
4 - PNE
5 - Bradford
6 - Barnsley
---------------------
24 - Swindon :fish:

It's all a matter of opinion, but how anyone can say a club who only had 2,500 more home fans than we did away fans in a game at their stadium they just got back are a bigger club than us is beyond me..

I know that's just one example, but historically, we are probably a bigger club than Coventry.

Last team of the current members to grace a European Club competition final = massssive!

In all seriousness though, it depends what you use to define size of a club. Coventry would be the biggest club for me based on history etc, bigger than the Blades but then years at this level and off field matters have knocked their fan base compared to the Blades.

Bradford have big followings but at cheap prices. Pretty sure I recall when we played there at this level ten years ago they'd get around 8-9000 so on a par with the likes of Millwall/Barnsley.

Wigan is an odd one as up until around 12 years ago they had zero history and never achieved anything, money injection has changed that but if your looking historically they were playing pub teams when most of us were playing out football league histories.

Fleetwood are the smallest, barely four years FL history and ten years ago were literally at the level of some local sides to me such as Holwell Sports and Coalville Town.

I'd say Burton after that as second smallest then Rochdale, Colchester, Crewe, Scunthorpe and Shrewsbury.

We're kind of similar sized to Gillingham, Doncaster, Peterborough, Oldham, Swindon, mainly 2nd-4th tier roaming, the odd cup run and a couple of FL trophies. Support level between 4-6000 at this level.

Leicester City have just won the premier league and we're having a conversation about who's the biggest baddest willy waver in L1?

None of this shit matters.

All I've had is family and friends tugging over the premier league glory and will probably hear about it for ten years solid... Thought I'd get away from it in L1 forums! (Not bitter at all about it though.... )

It wasn't aimed at you mate, it's just an entirely pointless discussion. As I'm sure the rest of the thread will prove ;)

It depends whether it's better to have had 100 years of League Football twiddling your thumbs, or 30 years with a massive mark left.

I'm probably biased in this, but I err toward the latter (depends on the clubs being compared really). Meh.

These sort of threads always descend into the same old arguments between fans of clubs that once rode high in the footballing pyramid but have slumped sufficiently enough to be playing at a level with just one other division separating them from non-league football.

As I always ask in these threads, has anyone actually come up with a way to decide what constitutes a club being classed as 'big'?

I've tried to keep your discussion going by asking a simple question in my last post

- Time spent in the top division
- Average attendances
- Historical success
- Recent success

Everything adds up to make a big club.

The discussion is lame, often repeated and futile.

What is useful though is the league system, where clubs play each other, accrue points and over an even number of matches, prove who is better than who.

But y'know, I wonder who sold the most cups of Bovril in the 1925-6 season...

If you don't enjoy the topic in a thread you simply don't need to post in it, it's really that simple.

I'd put us above Bury, they were alright a century or so ago, but they've only got about 2000 fans now. Move Bradford to below Wigan, and Gillingham below Southend.

This considered would (I think) place us above at least Barnsley on your list. I think if the finances were taken away from Wigan, above them too. Bradford is arguable.

Wigan in brackets because they are the original Crawley. Tinpot fucking nobodies artificially inflated with a cash injection from a local bellend.

Swindon have had higher attendances than us over the last ten years, but 18 Championship seasons to our 46. Seeing as for quite literally the entire 21st century we have been owned by fuckwit after fuckwit nonstop there are some explanatory circumstances for this.

Bradford let people in for free and Firthy knows it

Well in that case then Vale being somewhere in the middle is probably about right. I think we are similarly sized to quite a few clubs in this division

You've got to try and even things out. If Wigan had spent 7 (?) seasons at L1 level as Blades have their attendances would be down to below 5000. Sheff Utd are a massive club for this league.

We've spent more time at this level than any other and will average 7000 come what may. People can knock Bradford for cheap tickets but if most other clubs tried it they would only put on an extra 1-2,000 at best.

Coventry appear to want to emulate Blades for underperforming year by year.

Are Wigan Athletic even the biggest sporting team in their own town?

I seem to remember Vale doing a similar scheme to ours
Bradford let people in for free and Firthy knows it
Don't understand why so many opposing fans knock our club for making football watching affordable.Seem to remember Vale trying it a few years back. What was the outcome? Size of clubs is irrelevant. Surely the biggest teams in league 1 are Wigan, Burton, Walsall, Millwall, Bradford etc.
