But its rather stupid isn't it? The 2 clubs can hardly be compared when you look at everything and the general view of the neutrals.

I think Coventry are bigger but there's little in it.

It's not even like its Sheffield United fans. It's Bristol City who haven't done much meaningful in their entire existence. If it was Sheffield United at least it would be a fair debate where it could be argued either way rather than 'we've got loads of potential'.

No it would be exactly the same debate as this for example.

Coventry are a bigger club than bristol city just as sheffield united are a bigger club than coventry end of debate. Bristol city are a better team than the pair of us and a division higher thats what matters. Also neither sheffield united or coventry are big clubs nobody cares whos bigger than who.

I love this thread. It's the ultimate willie-waving contest, diminished only by the absence of Rotherham fans.

There is a scientific way to establish the peckering order. That's by factoring in the number of tinpot elements and the number of big penis elements.

Each club starts with 20 points. Except Wigan. Because I don't like them very much.
Add 1 point for every season since the war in the PL or old First Division.

1. If club (current legal entity) was established before 1900: +5 points
2. If chairman or CEO has a proper, local first name. Like Stan, Sid, Norman or Yussuf: +5 points
3. If club (current legal entity) was established after 1960: -15 points
4. If original ground (before everyone went all seating) held more than 50,000: +15 points
5. If more than 40% of ground is covered in asbestos sheeting: -5 points
6. If any part of the flooring or surface anywhere in the ground is made up of crushed cinders or old mill slag: +12 points
7. If club has ever been in Premier League: + 20 points (in addition to the points earlier)
8. If the ground is actually finished. No, we mean completely finished including all the seats, doors, stairs and windows.: +10 points
9. if any stand is the mirror image of any other stand in the ground: - 10 points.
10. If club does not possess or use a portacabin anywhere in the ground: +15 points
11. If the club does not have a FY postcode: +7 points
12. If average gate this last season (regardless of division) was more than 8,000 (+5 points), more than 11,000 (further +5 points), more than 19,804 (further 1 point)
13. If away following averages more than 500 (+5 points), more than 1,000 (further 5 points), more than 1,500 (further +5 points)
14. 2 points for each match when club was live on TV excluding play-offs and pre-season friendlies in Malta or Ireland.
15. Club has recorded official song at any time in its history: -12 points.
16. Further -8 points if the song is still sung.
17. Nickname involves fish, fruit, chickens or small dogs: -8 points
18. If you are so embarrassed at who you support that at parties, you say you support Man Utd or Liverpool: -10 points
19. If any stand has an official sponsor in its name: -15 points (Further 5 point deduction if sponsor designs, makes, sells or disposes of pies)
20. Tinpot competitions: if you commemorate the winning of any cup open only to lower league clubs (JPT), other tinpot clubs (Dorset Senior Cup) or, say, something like the Anglo-Italian-Faroese-Toto Cup. -10 points. If you **would** celebrate them if you actually ever got past the first round of any of these cups: -15 points.
21. Aggregate noise. -10 points if at the average home game last season, seated at the back of the main stand, you could hear the players shouting to each other.

Your league standing can be increased by sending detailed "clarifications" to League 1 Performance Standings Officer, PO Box 2018, Zurich Switzerland.

I think Coventry are the bigger team for what its worth. Who cares though? We'd had a great season and the future is looking good. Best of luck to Cov, I hope they get back to the big time asap.

Back on topic. Any chance of someone doing a list of the 24 in size order? Maybe using some logic not just emotion to decide it. Like average gates and league positions since the war etc

Historically we are bigger then Fleetwood, Crewe, Doncaster, Peterborough, Wigan, Rochdale, Bury, Scunthorpe, Burton, Colchester for example, but in the last five years, Peterborough and Doncaster have done well and had finance, Wigan have been in the premiership and won the FA Cup.

Ultimately the relevance is little, we're all third tier clubs and that's the ultimate measurement for any club at the current time.
Not that it matters much but I reckon we shade it just against you lot.

I'll point you to this....

http://www.european-football-statistics.co.uk/attnclub/porv.htm

http://www.european-football-statistics.co.uk/attnclub/bury.htm

Just for a quick break down overall stats (you know for the next time you bang a big list of clubs out who you are historically bigger than)

Port Vale

Total years 102
Major honours = 0
Level 1 Seasons 0
Level 2 Seasons 41
Level 3 Seasons 43
Level 4 Sesons 18

Attendances (highest averages)

1889 - 1939 14.000 1921
1947 - 1985 20.869 1955
1986 - now 9.174 1995

Bury
Total years 110
Major honours = 2
Level 1 Seasons 22
Level 2 Seasons 39
Level 3 Seasons 26
Level 4 Seasons 23

Attendances (highest averages)

1889 - 1939 19.500 1925
1947 - 1985 16.821 1950
1986 - now 6.177 1998

So your statement about Port Vale being a historically bigger club than Bury isn't really as cut and dry as you make it out to be.

Sorry JJH, you know I like you, but I disagree with you here.

I think you're confused between "bigger" and "better"

You're most definitely far better than Coventry at the minute, but to say you're a bigger club based on 5-6 years is just plain wrong. It takes a good 20-25 years at least of being superior to be classed as bigger imo.

As an example, Burnley have been better than us for a good 7-8 years but I wouldn't class them as bigger than us. We are very very similar and always have been. It would take something drastic and a prolonged period of superiority for them or us to change that.

I'm reality it matters not a jot. We are start with zero points on August.

I feel for Stockport and Wrexham fans who must feel how much bigger they are then all the other teams in their divisions yet find themselves looking up at teams like Eastleigh and afc fylde. The bigger they are the harder they fall and that is what Coventry and sheff u are finding. Comfortably the two biggest teams on this division..yet it counts for nothing.

I'm not basing it on the last 5 years on the whole, mainly over the last 25.

And I don't really think the emphasis is on us going into great things, because we really haven't, I think the emphasis is more on Coventry's steady decline and lack of success.

It's certainly a controversial opinion, but it's one I'm happy to stick by :)

The last 25? Since 1990 we have had 11 years in the Premier League and in the same period you have just hovered between League one and the championship.
In the 25 year period you have average between 7000 and 16,000. Whereas we have averaged between 9000 and 21,000. You have spent 4 seasons below 10,000 compared to our one season (when you don't included crowds in Northampton).

Even if you look at FA Cup final stages both clubs have got to since 1990 they swing towards us and our two quarter finals - I am trying to find something to consider you 'BIGGER':ffs:.

I am ashamed to be involved tbh.
Well stop then

Bristol and Coventry City are the two most random clubs to have an argument about ever... Be like Bury and Inverness...

People who actually aren't sad as fuck, who have jobs and actual personal lives should put things into perspective and realise a debate on Coventry and Bristol really isn't important at all in the grand scheme of life. It certainly isn't worth 20 pages of absolute shite and going round in circles..

Can we just close the fucking thread?

Is this still going on

It's literally not relevant to anything
I'm not arguing with any Coventry fans anymore tbh - everything that could have ever possibly been covered between the two clubs has been.

This is the most tragic thread on the whole of 1FF.

Bristol City and Coventry ffs, my local Sunday league side are bigger than the two combined.
