If Hurst can slap him out of this apparent bad boy attitude then we might have a good player. I trust in that Hurst does in fact know a good player when he sees one. Clay signed after having done nothing at all anywhere yet turned out to be quite good. If nothing else, Hurst still has his beloved loan market to fall back on.

Even without his attitude, he just has no 'get up and go' about him. He's quite happy just breezing through games without breaking into a sweat and doing just enough.

I would have thought Wrexham would have been tailor-made for Nolan tbh. If he isn't in their thoughts who are no doubt a decent passing team, I find it strange that Grimsby have taken a punt. I still think there is a good player in him, but he does have one of those big time charlie can't be arsed a lot of the time attitudes which will not endear himself to most fans.

1 good game 10-12, nearly scored against the cods from memory this season but his shot was cleared off the line.

I'm just whelmed by that, neither under nor over. Seemingly arrives with a substsntial list of positive and negative attributes. I don't think the fact that he is a considered to be a decent passer and more of a Mills style midfielder is that much of an unHurst move. It's his attitude problems in the past that seem out of place, when you consider Hurst doesn't think twice about moving on first team members who disrupt the harmony. Still, he'll get a clean slate here and we'll judge him on his time in a Grimsby shirt.
What else can you lot tell us about him ability wise? Good on the ball? Attack minded?

He's actually a half decent box-to-box midfielder when he wants to be but more often than not he's just satisfied with just sitting back, collecting the ball from the centre backs and passing it sideways. He has all the attributes to dictate play from the centre of the park but as Luke says, he just doesn't have that drive to actually act upon it.

You should be happy. He can run games on his day. I've still not seem a midfielder play better in non league than him, County fans hate him and rightly so cos his attitude is a disgrace and he's a big reason why we went down as he just didn't care. But when he did care he could boss a game, good on the ball although sometimes a little over confident, and will put a tackle in. When he left us I was sure he'd be in the football league by now, he was man of the match in the large majority of our games

He's neither one or the other really.

He looks far more comfortable playing in a deeper role because the play is ahead of him, he has lots of time, pick the ball up from a CB and pass it sideways 10 yards, but he's not got the physical attributes to break play up and be the defensive midfield option.

We tried him further forward for a bit but he's not got the awareness to pick the ball up in tighter areas and have his back to goal more often than not. And, again, his not physical enough for that position either i.e. protecting the ball/holding it up a little bit.

I'm not 100% sure what his goals and assists stats are here over the 3 years but I'd be amazed if they're as high as 5 each. Don't be expecting 50 yard diagonal balls, goals and assists. More short, safe sideways passing and the odd risky, reckless tackle in there.

Nolan is capable of being the best midfielder in the league, he just needs the right manager. Top player.

We were told that 3 years ago when he signed for us but he's not further on than when he signed. He's 23(?) now.

Dreadfully honest that we needed a top drawer first team central midfielder. We've signed Henderson who couldn't get in the team BEFORE he signed and fucking Jon Nolan. Who is not only no better than what we have but by all means a knobhead.

Don't you just think that it might be an idea to see him play in a Grimsby Town shirt before being all melodramatic. On one hand you have the Lincoln fans slating him, on the other hand you have Wrexham fans who say he was pretty decent for them and wanted him to stay.

What I will say is that I'm glad there weren't any internet forums around when we signed Paul Futcher!

Fucking hell, we need a decent centre-half and who do we sign, a 35 year old has-been who can't even get in Halifax's Reserves.

Nolan was alright. Started to look quite good for us then got injured. Not sure what happened then as he didn't get.back into the team. I had a completely unsubstantiated idea that he might be involved in the alleged bad behaviour by some of our players that was being reported on our forum. That is based on nothing but blind conjecture though.

Technically good albeit a little lightweight. Didn't appear to be able to shoot either. Should have been perfect for us really.

Nolan seemed well liked by the fans at The Racecourse; he fitted into our team well, and showed glimpses of being a "proper footballer". He certainly did well enough to have extended his stay to the end of the season; that Mills sent him back either points to him being a bit of a twat, or that Mills is a bit of a gingerist.

Exactly this, when we signed Ollie Palmer at a similar time of year I'm sure most of our fans were not exactly popping the champagne corks, but he turned into an excellent signing for us.

Reckon we've strengthened better then Cheltenham and Grimsby so far this window. Two more quality strikers signed in Brett Williams and Kieffer Moore. Both too good for this league if we get the best out of them.

Just need to stick a load of cameras around the ground so that Williams thinks he's on telly every week and bang, the goals will flow.

The Futcher line is boring, it's one example from absolutely years ago.

I'm not concerned about his ability, it's obvious there is some. It's two things, his attitude and track record of causing trouble worries me. What also worries me is that he's not the big first team star we needed. As I said, I didn't slate him as a player. I said he's not what most of us expected to sign considering we desperately need.

I also don't like the idea of gambling on a player in January, it's undoubtedly a gamble. I accept you're always taking a gamble signing a player, but why a player who has consistently caused more trouble than his performances on the pitch warranted.

But I repeat, the Futcher thing is probably the most boring, shite comparison I've seen on the Fishy. For every Futcher there's been at least 10 Damien Spencer's.

Injured all the time. If he was reliable I think we'd have signed him, he is a good player no doubt about it. I think he will do well at Grimsby, playing with better players for a start.

And that is exactly my point. When we signed Murray Jones and going back even further Jimmy Gilligan, we were all raving that we'd signed a great striker who would score goals for fun and both turned out to be absolutely useless.

You shouldn't really judge a player on their past career. I'll give anyone a chance until I've seen them play a few times in a Grimsby Town shirt instead of shooting them down before they've even pulled one on.
