There are more English speakers in China than there is in any other country in the world.

The vast majority of whom watch Chinese broadcasts of the EPL.

Not to mention that Manchester United have lost 40 million Thai supporters who now follow the glorious King Power of Leicester.

You talk about me clinging to a point after flogging the number "14" like a decomposing horse?

I'm done with this. I should have reminded myself before my last post that this is what you do. You would argue the sky was red purely because someone else pointed out it was blue.

First of all, "arguing for the sake of it" is the entire basis of every forum, do you really expect people to peddle groupthink when there is compelling evidence to the contrary of "greatest sporting achievement ever"?

If people aren't allowed to disagree then what is the point? Validation of opinions you yourself aren't even sure of?

Moving from 14th to 1st is remarkably similar to moving from 14th to 1st - Leicesters story isn't unique, in fact it was achieved almost verbatim by Montpelier a few years ago.

The vast majority of whom watch Chinese broadcasts of the EPL.

Not in my experience of living in China. Given how desperate they to practice their English (with anyone) it would hardly make any sense to make a Mandarin or Cantonese broadcast of something that is easily accessible in English.

Furthermore, many people watch it on streams which is broadcast predominantly in English.

Nice try though.

No you're right. TV stations getting a couple of local dudes to talk over a live feed just to cater to like hundreds of millions of people who speak no English and will never learn wouldn't be worth it at all. No idea what I was thinking.

Where do the Chinese people find streams predominantly in English btw? In your experience of living in China, I mean. The ones I find on local sites (pptv, letv, zhibo etc) are always in Chinese. Point me in the right direction. Help a brother out.

The EPL matches there were certainly broadcast in English in Shanghai between 2008-2010. They may well also be broadcast in Mandarin, I never had any reason to check.

On the internet? The majority of streams online are in English - I don't know which ones are available / blocked in China. Front Row Sports broadcasts in English - I find it much easier finding a English stream than a Portuguese stream.

oooo he fucked with the wrong english chinaman

You don't think the fact English football is broadcast in English helped spread its popularity in Asia relative to football that is only broadcast in Spanish? It's the biggest factor in the spread of the 'EPL' to that market.

Yeah, I see what you mean, perhaps if we start broadcasting it in Welsh to the Americans, it'll become the number one sport there too.

I love Chinese people (particularly women) me, so i use the term with the utmost RESPECT.

St.Juste isn't Spanish like the second most spoken language in the world?

Also, the PL is generally considered to be the most competitive among Europe's top 5 leagues. In my very humble opinion, to say that jumping 14th to 1st in the PL is the exact same level an achievement as in Ligue 1 is wrong.

Imagine if you wanted to brush up on your English and you thought watching English football would help, and you were met with Sky's coverage of Richard Keys and Andy Gray with input from Harry Redknapp. That lads 'triffic. Take a bow son, etc. Oh and here's an interview from the tunnel with Wayne Rooney.

It's enough to set your English skills back years.

Well hasn't this all gone off on somewhat of a tangent.

Yeah I wasn't insinuating anything from you Sl1k, its just its a long time since I heard that word and thought it was maybe an archaic term for someone hailing from China, just as Scotchman is for people where I come from. No doubt someone would take offense to those terms though just to get their voices heard, just as they get all up in arms about if someone calls another person 'coloured' rather than 'mixed race'.

Anyway, I digress. :D

Okay. How does you watching it in English 6+ years ago lead you to believe the Chinese folk do too (now and/or then)? Apart from it hardly making any sense to even have a Chinese language broadcast, ofc.

And how is you finding English streams more easily than Portuguese ones in Brazil at all relevant to people supposedly finding English streams more easily than Chinese ones in China?

Also, congratulations Leicester.

Do you think Leicester winning is the greatest achievement ever in sport? As some on this thread do?
That might be Buster "Who?" Douglas taking the belts from Mike Tyson in heavyweight boxing. Or, the "Miracle on Ice," USA vs. The Soviet Union, Olympic Ice Hockey 1980. Or, Nottingham Forest winning the European Cup 1979. Goran Ivanisevic winning the Wimbledon in 2001 also springs to mind.
It's totally a subjective question. But Leicester City is definitely up there now.

If Jimjams wasn't just a constantly punning, less funny ZFG/Stagat, I'd be really happy for him. I don't know any Leicester fans. It must be unimaginably joyful there at the mo.

That reburied king coincidence... freaky as fuck, right lads?

You have really not thought that one through.

Not really, perhaps as a first language but the total number of English (and Mandarin) speakers will exceed it. But anyway, even if it was it's not where the market is. South America has a rich footballing tradition and well supported local clubs whereas in Asia (China and elsewhere) the domestic league is weak and easily supplanted by the most available foreign league. I think only in Thailand does the domestic television matches attract more attention than EPL games - in most other places it isn't even close.

Considered by whom though? And for what reason? Ligue 1 has roughly the same amount of league winners, Spain too over the last 10-15 years.

Okay. How does you watching it in English 6+ years ago lead you to believe the Chinese folk do too (now and/or then)? Apart from it hardly making any sense to even have a Chinese language broadcast, ofc.

The simple fact that the Chinese people who want to learn English (or speak it already) watch every available English broadcast they can - to augment their language skills. Or maybe they hardly speak any foreign languages, but because of the proliferation of Western culture / television / movies their understanding of English will easily supplant their understanding of Spanish.

It isn't a solitary factor of course, for many wealthy Chinese people British culture is something to admire and emulate - it's where they invest a lot of money, it's where they send their kids to university. They have a much greater affinity with it than Spain or Italy. And whilst the ordinary Chinese person won't care either way those with influence and power are naturally more likely to follow something they can understand / feel some kind of affinity with. That's why the EPL might be able to cling onto the "most watched" tag despite clearly being no where near the best - but in years to come I think it's almost certain La Liga will supplant it. Particularly once the TV bubble bursts.

I watched the whole thing in a hostel in Dublin. There were people from all over the world that stopped their holiday to watch it. The whole place gave a standing ovation after the opening and closing ceremonies, some people were moved to tears.
