Group A: Colombia, USA, Paraguay, Costa Rica

Colombia will top the group as they are finally clicking after the disastrous 2015 they've had. Colombia are once again looking like the team they were in 2013 and 2014. Very fast paced, great to watch, lots of danger in the attack. They are definitely favourites to win at this tournament. As for the other 3, Paraguay should clinch second. USA missing out and Costa Rica to lose all their games. Some could argue USA are at home, but Paraguay and Colombia are both better sides by a mile, and the USA are very beatable at home, like the Gold Cup 2015 proved. Costa Rica are shit. They were good in the 2014 World Cup but that was a one time thing. They are back to what they are historically and that is being not very good.

Group B: Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, Haiti

Easily the hardest group to predict. I don't even know where to start. I guess I can go on with Brazil, if Dunga is still there by this moment, which he should be, then no chance Brazil will win this tournament. However, Brazil should top this group. The Haiti match is basically a free win for Brazil, as for the other 2, its hard to judge Ecuador. They do terrible in every tournament they participate in. The 2006 World Cup was the last tournament where they did decent, going out in the groups of the Copa America in 2007, 2011, and 2015, and the groups in the 2014 World Cup. If that continues on here, I can expect Peru to beat them even though they are a better side than us. If they do perform, then I can see them beating Brazil and Peru, and of course Haiti. As for Peru, I can't say what will happen. Peru have been very, VERY poor as of late, and the players aren't playing for their clubs (abroad of course) except Guerrero, Cueva, Advincula, and Pizarro. I may have missed some there, but there has to be changes. Haiti is finishing bottom. No chance they get any points. The team they have the most chance of getting points against though is Peru, I hate to say just because of how poor we've been.

Group C: Uruguay, Jamaica, Mexico, Venezuela

I hate to say this, but Mexico are definitely making it through their group here. I don't think they'll top it, as Uruguay is also here, but they'll make it through. Venezuela and Jamaica are awful. I can see Jamaica taking a somewhat similar approach that they took during the Copa America 2015, although Jamaica are capable of beating Venezuela. It all depends on Venezuela's new manager though as Sanvicente is gone now. Mexico and Uruguay will breeze through this group. Venezuela and Jamaica are both pretty terrible, Venezuela is at their worst in 20 years, and Jamaica despite reaching the Gold Cup final in 2015 are really not very good. However, they do a good job defensively, and that could possibly get them points in the group, but to go through? I doubt it.

Group D: Argentina, Chile, Panama, Bolivia

And interesting group. Argentina and Chile should breeze it, but I would like to see where Bolivia stand. The game against Panama is one I'll definitely watch as it will tell me how much better or worse Bolivia is over Panama. Argentina will win this group, Chile second. The big match is Argentina vs Chile really, as those 2 teams will beat everyone else in the group.

This is all assuming the teams don't send their under 23's however.

Everything will really depend of how the teams will come (main squad or not). But also would go with the same predictions: Colombia/Paraguay, Uruguay/Mexico, Argentina/Chile (would be more excited for a confront of them if Chile was still with Sampaoli but, considering the actual situation, yet one of the most interesting confrontations) and for group B I won't even dare to predict but I think Brazil will go through it. Anyway would like to see the main teams playing. I think Brazil will at least, just without Neymar because of that thing of Barcelona only liberating him for one competition and Dunga preferred the Olympic games. Don't think we can win it though, would say the better chances are for Argentina and Colômbia.

Shoot, that's right, Neymar won't be playing this.

Not a big loss as Neymar has only performed once in a competitive match under Dunga and that was against Peru in the Copa America. After that he's done nothing. I know he was suspended for a while, but even after that he hasn't done much.

There have been rumours that teams will not send their full squads. I'm not entirely sure on the reason but I think part of it has to do with this not being a REAL Copa America. So far, Peru and Costa Rica have sent weaker squads.

Probably as its a commemorative edition some coaches just preferred to rest their main squad. But I don't think it has much to do with Olympics as for it they have age limitation for the teams (sub-23 except 3 players) unless it's to getting "game rhythm" but it's risky considering it put the players into more risk of contusions.

USA missing out
I can see us getting through, we've got virtually the same squad as WC 2014 and Paraguay aren't too strong.

Let's say Colombia get 9 points, which is probable.

A win against Paraguay and a draw against Costa Rica will be enough, as we'll have at least 4 points, whereas Paraguay will have 3, maximum.

You won't beat Paraguay. Paraguay are better than you.

You'll beat Costa Rica though

Where did Paraguay finish in the 2014 World Cup?

It genuinely pisses me off that people think that just because the USA went to the world cup it makes them "better" than some teams. The USA is by no means better than Paraguay, Peru, Ukraine or Wales

You have to remember USA qualify against teams like Honduras, Guatemala and Panama. Paraguay has to qualify with Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay and then play in the altitude of Bolivia and Ecuador.

Paraguay finished 4th in the last Copa America and not only that, has players playing in more important leagues then the USA. They are also now fighting to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. They've improved since the 2014 qualifiers a lot.

USA will lost against both South American sides but will beat Costa Rica.

I will say two things that are both probably true.

1. You're biased towards the South American team because you've seen more of them.
2. The US is by no means a good team, I'm just saying that we have the potential to get out of the group. Even if we agree that Paraguay is better than the US, that doesn't mean the US can't win against them and get out of the group.

I'd say USA would win 5 or 6 times out of 10, although I am biased. I don't really think there are any standout players from Paraguay, and we have a solid squad.

You say you have a solid squad because you know most of their players, and most of USA's players play in the MLS which is a shit league. Most of Paraguays players play in Argentina, Brazil and Mexico. The Paraguayan league as proven in the last few Copa Libertadores, is also a very solid league.

I would take Ortigoza on my team over Bradley any day.

I would take the USA team over the Paraguay team any day. And Howard over whoever Paraguay's goalkeeper is.

Silva and Villar are miles ahead of Howard.

I'd even take Peru's backup keeper over Howard. Howards gash

Just because you don't know Paraguay's player doesn't make the US better.

I don't have a clue about Norway's players but I bet they're better than Peru anyways.

What was the result last time the teams played?

I get what you're saying Lib but as always you are blighted by South America. Paraguay were solid but they did spend the last qualifying round for Brazil 2014 BOTTOM of the continent! That's behind Bolivia and Peru! I get that things might have improved since then but, from an outsider's view, you can't fault us for thinking that this ain't looking good!

Around that time, the US were better. However around that time the USA also had players playing in decent leagues + Landon Donovan. Now? They all play in the MLS bar a few players, and the MLS is of a pathetic standard. Paraguay has a very strong league and most of their players play in Mexico, Argentina and Brazil and that is good enough for a good South American side. I always say Peru needs to have players playing there rather than Europe to even fight for World Cups.

Paraguay has done well in the Copa Libertadores the last 5 years, having 2 finalists, 1 semi-finalist and 2 quarter finalists. It came to no surprise to me that they are beginning to do well again.

Also, I'm not faulting Epic for thinking that the USA are better than Paraguay, I'm faulting this

"I don't think there are any standout players from Paraguay, while the US has a solid squad"

Just because you haven't heard of certain players doesn't make them bad. As I said I know fuck all about Norway's squad but I'm sure they can beat Peru for example which I believe we have a solid squad as well. Its the same issue with Ecuador, great team but overlooked just because a lot of players aren't too well known outside of South America.

Just for argument's sake, Lib, where do you reckon Paraguay will finish in the WC2018 qualifiers?

5th or 6th. They'll be fighting for those spots with Brazil and Chile.
