Reports he might well sign a new 5 year contract after missing out on his "dream move"

Seem strange given Van Gaal's feeling that De Gea wasn't focused and ready to play...

Van Gaal always maintained that was because of the speculation and that he'd reassess the situation once the transfer window was shut.

I'm pleased to have him for another year atleast because if we do achieve anything of any significance this season De Gea will be one of the main catalysts behind it. If he signs a new contract I'll be ecstatic, he'll end up back in Madrid one day but selling him on our terms would obviously be ideal.

Been rumours about it for a while now, but with Mendes apparently pictured at Carrington and the Beebs reporting "contract talks" it's looking likely United will secure him to a new contract. Fucking brilliant, hoping it all gets settled before the Liverpool game and he starts.

Even if he does go in a year, there's no price you can put on his contribution to this team and after Romero's weaknesses getting exposed against Swansea it's a relief. Means we'll get proper money for him when he does leave too, win win!

It will be like a new 30 million signing for United.
At least that's about how much they have to pay to tie him to a new contract I guess.

Maybe DDG has heard that a skilled manager might be coming in within the next year or so when van Joke leaves.

It seems Real's interest has cooled, which surprises me a lot given that he's better than any of the keepers they have or likely to get. I'm not sure what they're playing at but if they lose him to a new United deal it will be idiotic on their part.

Unless there's a 'gentlemans agreement' in place that United get him to sign a deal so he cant' walk for free, plays this season for them, and then leaves for a set price to Real in the summer.

To go from being a paperwork cock up away from leaving, to signing a new deal, is a heck of a turn around.

As I said earlier in the thread, that wouldn't really make sense from a personal perspective. He would have guarantees should he be injured, but would surely be sacrificing a large signing on fee and possibly a significant difference in wages if Real get him for nothing as opposed to £40m+ should he be on another long term deal. Still, that's not to say it's not what's happening here.

It's a good result for United regardless. They either get one of the best keepers in the world for the next four years or will get the highest fee ever paid for a keeper should he move.

I can't see why on earth De Gea would sign a contract with a world record fee clause for a keeper written into it. It serves no purpose to him. Given that Buffon cost over 50 million Euros to Juventus back in the day, having the clause put in there is basically saying he will never go to Real, as them signing him for a stupid price would more likely be seen as a bad thing given that the fans all know the situation. They'd leave him be and look at outfield players. Great for Utd, not for De Gea.

Well if it does comes off it's great news for the United fans.. Has anyone heard reports about LVG saying he signed that French kid, Martial? Martian? for the next manager? I know he said he'd promised his wife he'll be leaving at the end of his contract.

Well, from being resigned to losing him in the summer to a 4 yr contact is brilliant for United. Like Nilsson says he will be instrumental in any succes they get this season.

Baffling but certainly good for United. Perhaps Real dragging their heals on deadline day pissed him off to the point where he was happy to stay. As JJ said above, I can't see Real coming in with a £40m+ bid next summer now. It would be ridiculous when they could have had him for nowt with a bit of sensible communication.

Wow. Talk about a turnaround. Like others say, there will likely be some sort of release clause written into the contract, but United can't really lose here.

Fair play to Ed Woodward and those involved. Great coup by United.

Good bit of business by United, and it's been a while since I've said that.

4 year deal with the option for another year and LVG saying he expects De Gea to be at the club for many years.

:bdick:

Quite shocked that it's turned out like this tbh,

:fing: Fuck you Real.

I wonder if the story of what actually happened will eventually come out. But as I said above, at the moment it appears to be more about Real losing interest in signing him rather than De Gea preferring Manchester United.

There's definetely a whole load of shiz that went down before it got to this, alot of it political on Real's side I think. Even with De Gea being Spanish, their fans seem to have always been behind Navas.

I think most United fans could understand him wanting to return to his hometown, but the way Real had dealt with the whole situation was all fuckery - unsettling our 'keeper and playing games all window. Turned out in our favour though if we get to keep him for another few years.

I don't think we'll ever get to know exactly what happened and why the deal didn't go through last month.

I think both parties pissed around too much in the end.

Wonderful news. Real tried playing alpha with the biggest club in the world and now they look quite silly.

Delighted with that. We've went from having a shambolic situation to a great one. If De Gea stays past this season, then we have arguably the best goalkeeper in the world for the foreseeable future. If he leaves, we'll rightly demand a massive figure for him. It's become a win-win situation.

I really don't think he has any interest in leaving after the summer antics though.

The more I think about it the more clear it seems that pesky David was just using Madrid to sign a new contract with the mighty United. He could've just left on a free next year and got himself a ginormous signing on fee, afterall.

It's probably just me but I think this llama looks like Dave de Gea. That's where the similarity ends, if there is one. The llama could no more save a 30 yard scorcher than De gea could have a shit in a field in front of people.

Great stuff. A four year deal with an option for another one suggests there isn't going to be a release clause, if so it won't be cheap. He'll be at United for at least a couple of more seasons now I think. Not sure if he'll play tomorrow but it'd be a great boost.
