The last great English centre back of our time looks set to depart the English game this summer (is this right, thought I heard MLS but I don't really watch the BPL anymore or read news items), what are your fondest JT memories?

Probably the highlight of my 21st birthday:

In all seriousness, he was probably the best English player of his generation, and I think people rate him less as a footballer because they don't like him as a person. Chelsea will find it very hard to replace him.

I can't post GIFs for some reason but if I could, Diaby's best moment in an Arsenal shirt would probably feature.

In the mid to late noughties (I hate that word) he was the best defender in the country. The fact he's a bit of a c**t shouldn't take that away from him.

The best English centre back for two generations. Should be going to the Euros imho, as currently there is no-one better in the PL.

Rio was better and he was playing at the same time.

Tony Adams, Ledley King & Sol Campbell were also better.

JT was fortunate he had Jose. Terry was a carthorse, only looks good now because of the absolute shite that's now in his place. Smalling, Jones, Jagielka, Cahill.

Nope, not having it. Tony Adams as good, but played in a very good 4. Ledley King was a cripple and could only play once a year. Solomon? Don't make me laugh and Rio? No way.

Duck mouth possibly, arguable and it's close. But the other three? No. Especially King, you can't argue a defender to be amongst the best if the guy can't play more than one game a week without his legs falling off. Regardless of how talented he is.

Ledley King was the English Franco Baresi, don't you know?

All three were better footballers than Terry.

Rio was immense in his prime, a Rolls-Royce centre back. Sol was a beast too. Teams weren't handicapped going forwards because all three had the pace to bail them out of trouble, Terry didn't, they amount of times teams simply walked though Chelsea & England because Terry's boots were planted into the mud was simply laughable.

Saying Ledley isn't better than Terry because he didn't play many games is like saying Led Zeppelin aren't better than One Direction because they didn't have number 1 hits like One D have. Gotta look at the whole picture, Ledley was a centre back Terry could only dream to be.

I've read some fucking ridiculous analogies in my time but that's right up there. It's not a question of him not playing as many games, it's a question of him being a complete crock. You're effectively saying the reliability of a player being available for selection shouldn't be taken into account when judging their overall quality as a footballer. That's bullshit.

Should have been sacked by his club and shunned by football when he repeatedly racially abused Anton Ferdinand in 2012, let alone ever represented his country again. The way football dealt with that imbroglio was absolutely shameful.

I'm surprised Arsenal didn't put in a bid. :db:

If you have to explain a "joke" to someone, it's either shit or not worth the bother. Or both.

Despite his lack of pace for his entire career he rarely ever gets caught out. In recent years more, but still not huge amounts.

Still not really sure why he's being TURFED OUT (if indeed he is). Still reckon he has something to offer. Immense defender in his prime.

Also think he gets a disproportionate amount of shit for being a c*** (not that he doesn't deserve stick but loads of objectively really cunty footballers get off exceptionally lightly)

He still looks good enough to be a squad player for Chelsea, but would he be willing to properly accept that?

Rio was the better player, but the two were two of the very best in Europe mid-late 00s. The England squad of that time increasingly looks like a missed opportunity.

Funny as fuck that he wasn't even on the bench for that game, yet wore his full kit just to fit in with the photo opportunities like this. Perhaps that's what you're referring to.

After all the fuss, Chelsea have offered him a new one-year deal. Still remains to be seen if he accepts it, mind.
