I’ve decided I’d start Gime today. I know Beech probably won’t, but I would. We’ve been absolutely shite going forward, totally ineffective, so why not? Maybe he’ll produce something on his old ground.

You took more away then you've ever really averaged at home games? That doesn't sound plausible.

Yeah I'm not sure we've ever took 6,000+ to Feethams, the place only held 6,500, unless this was the black and white picture days before H&S existed?

We took 4,000 to their White Elephant stadium the last time we played them before they went bust.

Yeah, decent shout. I know we've been unchanged in all our games so far this season and picked up 6 points from four games before our first realistic opportunity to get some points on the board has even come around... but with Clough potentially fit, this being Toure's time of the season I might be tempted to go.

Our fans, particularly the younger ones, are really selling the Carlisle game tomorrow as something huge. I think they're pining for a proper derby.

Whatever, it's sold well, and it'll be good to see the old place three quarters full. We'll have to overcome our traditional stagefright. Of the 13 highest attended HOME games over the last two decades, we have won.... none. The largest Vic crowd that did see us win in that period also saw us relegated.

Oddly, unnervingly, pointlessly confident. 1-0.
I can certainly see it with the younger fans. You get a similar thing with us where various generations of fans pop up with different views on who our 'derby' is. They want one but they go from being bolshy teenagers to jaded adults in just four or five years.

We weren't in the same division as Preston for very long in the grand scheme of things, but long enough for one of the abiding memories of supporting Carlisle to be big away followings in games between us. My equivalent of that took place when Hartlepool were a decent team, usually in the division above whereas our most prickly and best supported fixtures were always with Darlo.

Still not a patch on the goal Grimsby keeper James McKeown scored for us last season
I hope youtube links are working again because this one really belongs in a museum.

Really weird if you just listened to that you wouldn’t realise anything significant had happened, let alone an enormous fuck up like that. Football behind close doors is shite.

I’d be for that lineup. Clough could play as a false 9, he could drop deep and Mellish could make advanced runs as well as obviously the two wide men.

I’d be disillusioned if i get there and it’s an unchanged lineup.

It's plausible if you know the history. I'd say it's one of the truest derbies in FL history. Two clubs who are each the other's sole local rivals; two clubs with scores of shared players in common; two clubs that have met well over 150 times, with very similar league records, head to head, average attendance. Often, during the unsuccessful years (of which there have been many) the derby was all there was; beating the other lot was everything.

So in those seasons where one club was chasing something, you could get some uncanny followings. Last time we played them there were 3750 Poolies in a 10k crowd, but in truth we were limited only by what they were able to sell us. Similarly in 1984/85, when Darlo were chasing promotion, here is a sequence of our home attendances: 2207, 1949, 3199 (bank hol), 2285, 1353, 5947 (Darlo), 1432, 1364, 1326... In their last three home games, as they clinched promotion, Darlo averaged ~3700. Our home average was through the floor, and yet there we were, just shy of 6k in the middle of Feb.

I assume the 6000+ referenced was in the great escape season of 71/72. Before my time but still talked about. We played at Feethams in late April. The attendance for the preceding home game was 2103, the game after was 2250. Ours was 8809!

Definitely need Mellish making those runs. Especially with the positions we've found ourselves in the last few games. They're situations where I thought we were supposed to be at our most dangerous with Mellish arriving in the box just as the cross comes in.

Try this, if i remember likely we needed this win to avoid the bottom spot.

Before your time most likely, 2,000+ Darlo the rest pools.

In typical Scunny fashion, we have a fit striker for one game and he's out injured/Covid the next one.

This does allow for Aaron Jarvis to finally return from injury, I would celebrate but he's a contender for worst player I have ever seen play.

Well we’ve changed the lineup, but we’ve gone with a more defensive approach with 5 at the back. Seems weird when it’s been scoring goals that’s been the problem not conceding. Honestly, the mind boggles, but we’ll see.

Good news is Maris is fit, bad news Perch is injured, so Rawson, Hewitt CB pairing, which makes me uneasy. Not that we can do much else, literally the only two players at the club available that can play at centre back.

This CB signing has took way too long, not sure how bad the injury to Perch is yet but I think realistically we could do with signing a CB to go straight in the team and maybe bring a loanee in too because we can’t afford to be so light in that area.

Four changes though seems it’s the same formation. Wilson and Proctor is the forward line I personally think has the best understanding from what I’ve seen so far so will see how that goes. Conlon on the bench though doubt he will come on today.

I’d be surprised if we even scored a goal today.

Well mystifying given that the shakiest we've looked defensively this season is when we've tried to go to a more defensive formation. McDonald and Whelan seem to have picked up each others game pretty quickly so adding a third centre back risks confusing the matter.

Good though to see Devine on the bench, and Clough starting, and there's a chance that the formation isn't the 532 it looks like.

Probably our strongest line up of the season today, 4-0 loss then.

I can’t see what else it could be, perhaps 5-4-1 if Clough drops into the midfield. Either way I think it’s a mystifying decision as you rightly say we’ve looked at our shittest this season when we’ve reverted to that. We’ve overall struggled to threaten opponents goals so we go with a more defensive approach. Weird.

We've still got 6 players out injured;- Matty Platt, Mike Jones, Jamie Devitt, Dmitri Sea, Luke Lames and Tom Beadling.....

Curle has kept faith with the outfield 10 from midweek, which is fair enough after the debacle at Bristol Rovers, he needs to be able to trust his team.

But the big news is the embarrassing situation with Jayson Leutwiler has been dealt with, he has graciously renegotiated his contract and starts. Should be excellent for us between the sticks this season.

Keeping the rest of the team the same means hugely exciting 17yo Vaughan and 19yo striker Luamba both start, but the returns of loan duo Bettache (cup tied) and Bowden (covid) are limited to places on the bench.

So players missing now are McGahey (calf, still out for another month or so) and Cisse (hamstring, 2 months)

Quick glance at the FGR team seems they are without Cadden. That is a massive break for us I think as he always causes us problems. Means we look to get Worrall further up the pitch without fearing what Cadden can do in response at least.

Yeah, heard some noises he might be back but looks like not made it. Adams suspended too. First XI pretty decent but bench looks thin.

I think the bench strength is something we do have in our favour. I can’t imagine Conlon will come on today but Politic, Amoo and Rodney are some good options as game changers after about 65 minutes if we are still in the game.
