Quite often sides coming from L1 struggle in L2. Then they come up against teams like us, well managed and in the habit of winning games. The gap isn't big enough to expect a walkover. It's hardly the Prem to the Championship.
Too right it can be a struggle, as we know only too well from the last time we dropped into this division from above. We were used to losing, and we dropped into a competitive division. As a newly relegated team you're also unlikely to be underestimated. Teams are up for the matches against you, and it can be difficult to adjust and easy to keep falling. You'll remember that it took us until about November to get to grips with the challenge, by which point Danny Wilson was under pressure. It got fun after that though :)

very good game i thought and again i was impressed with the opposition, though swindon had started the season well so shouldn't be a surprise, their big striker is a handfull.

thought we edged the game in terms of chances, again we gave up possession but it really doesn't matter when we're so direct with our chances - definitely wouldn't call us hoof ball though, we go down the wings most of the time and our biggest threat is worrall, after set pieces.

must say i didn't really notice the incident with their player going down - i watched it on ifollow but didn't have commentary on for a lot of it.

Look we are the biggest club at this level. We all know this as we were the last to play in the Championship. UTFI. Exeter well done. That was up there as one of the best results of all time

I thought Rochdale deserved to win the game today, although the manner of the defeat was frustrating for us. They were the better side in the first half and caused us a lot of problems in midfield, through the movement of Newby and Odo.

However, we got back into the game after half time and the winning goal resulted from us giving the ball away cheaply on the edge of our eighteen yard box. Sam Foley then contrived to hit the post from four yards out in stoppage time.

We have to find more creativity and fluency, and that probably means ditching five at the back and playing two strikers.

Careful now. Dont bosh it all in one son, your nose will be doing a Daniella Westbrook impression.

Have to feel for the Oldham fans and players; so reminiscent of us a few years back. Reasonably neat and tidy in midfield, but almost impossibly lightweight. Terrible at the back and powderpuff up front. We ragdolled them all over the pitch and barely broke a sweat to win. Their idiot chairman can’t fuck off soon enough.

Not much to add to what the other Rovers posters have said about today. Rochdale deserved their win, could have been more comfortable and 5 at the back with the current personnel isn't working.

Thought it was a good advert for league 2. There's no gimmes in this league and I feel like the standard is much better.

Vale much better first half, Swindon had a good go at the beginning of the second half but felt like we came back into it. Good to see both sides trying to win it.

Felt like we outfought Swindon in the end. They pass it around quite nicely but sometimes you need to be aggressive and battle. We'll beat a lot of teams with our endeavour.

Mellon must’ve give your lads a bollocking at HT because you looked a different side for the second half, from 45-60ish you were well in it. That said we really should’ve been out of sight at HT.
A great game that though. Promising for us as that’s the sort of game the last few seasons that we’d lose.
Thought Rovers fans had a touch of class applauding Odoh when subbed. I’ll be amazed if he’s still with us after Jan transfer window.

Expected result vs Leyton Orient, and things wouldn't change on the pitch until Abdullah and Mo sell the club to another owner.

I’ve got no complaints about the result at all - thought Vale looked good team. We do lack aggression and seemed to hardly put a tackle in. Shithousing is part and parcel of every game nowadays - we do it quite well, so no moans when someone does it to us.

Can’t say I particularly like our anal passing game - a lot of it is passing for passings sake - but it is what it is.

Btw, I hate those who say ‘playing football the right way’. There’s only 1 right way - the winning way. Well done, Vale.

Mansfield were really, really bad. Their players looked like 11 strangers out there and their defending the past few years look sturdy. Feel for their fans who turned up in good numbers and made a good amount of noise.

Cannot argue with that at all, we had probably our three most senior players missing but it’s no excuse for that sort of ‘inept’ performance like Clough said, although he’s guilty of poor decisions too. Funny old game, Colchester and Bradford fans will tell you a different story about this side!

Walsall did their homework, and decided (correctly) the best thing to do is lob the ball directly down the middle because we didn’t have anybody who can handle it, Hewitt in particular for the first was a disgrace.

Struggling to understand why Rollin was allowed to come here watching that defence today he is way better than that pairing.

I’ll be honest Rollin is clearly better CB than Hewitt who has literally nothing in his inventory to be a L2 CB but he’s not the solution despite not being terrifyingly weak like Hewitt.

The big fuck up is letting O’Keefe go to Rochdale.

Can you carry that on next week? I was a bit worried we’d miss O’keefe for our game but seems we might be alright after all?

Well we will still be missing some important players for that.

I encourage everybody to watch the highlights from yesterday, us Walsall and Mansfield fans ain’t being OTT about the defending, it doesn’t get any worse.

Switch Jimmy Keohane over to RWB and bring in Aidy White or Matt Done on the left.

If Mansfield's Centre Backs are vulnerable to high balls, we could even bring Josh Andrews in alongside Jake Beesley...

Obviously very happy with the 4-0 win. Hopefully this is the start of a winning run. We looked really good yesterday and I am hoping it was because we were and not that Scunthorpe had to make up a team with square pegs and round holes. No disrespect to the Scunny fans, and I knew in advance of some of the problems, but i'd be pretty worried if that performance was repeated week after week. Hope you get it sorted out

Timewasting or "game management" is a pain in the arse and refs should add on double time for any incidents of it.
All teams do it to some extent when it suits them and it wants stopping.

Not sure how you kept onto Matt Jay, he's ridiculous. S5 goals in 4 games against us now and he's not even a striker.

Our chairman came in and promised the fans the world, we really overspent in a pursuit to get to the Championship and we failed. Ever since our second L1 play-off loss, the budget has been slashed every single year. We definitely have one of the smallest budgets in the league this season, I wouldn't be shocked if it was the lowest.

Today was really bad for us. While we've lacked quality all season, we've showed proper fight and really tried. Today was different, the minute that first goal went in the heads dropped. I think our manager not being at the game today may have impacted that, there was no leadership. Not sure if you saw but on your third goal we'd just changed shape and nobody seemed to know where they were playing anymore.
I’m surprised nobody has taken a serious look at Matt Jay. Perhaps it’s his lack of height that raises a question mark, but otherwise I can’t think of a reason. 20 goals last season from a ‘number 10’ is excellent and he’s already on 5 in all comps this year and he’s been playing even deeper at times.

It’s crazy that your budget has been slashed so much. I always remember Scunthorpe signing really good young players like Gary Hooper and Billy Sharpe. Admittedly that was some time ago, but it’s worrying how quickly teams can fall from grace as a result of one bad season of spending. Hope you can turn it around.

External timekeeping with the clock stopped when the game is stopped.

I don't mind it. If you're losing then using the ball sensibly and not giving away silly fouls is part of the challenge.

Spot on, this is exactly as I saw it. Don't think we have enough 'steel' in this side. Vale seem to have all the ingredients to compete this season.

Good luck.
