If City win the League Cup, the prize money will cover 1/3 of Toure's weekly wage.

Worth it.

The problem is that you're comparing the team in 1966 to the team now.

Our team now is not playing against the 1966 West German side. It's playing against those well rested and energised chaps in the Bundesliga and La Liga and it is certainly not winning any tournaments.

I mean, he's Jurgen Klopp, he knows what he is talking about.

The real question is whether we actually want a slightly better chance at tournaments if it means giving up Christmas football and our beloved carling cup.

I wasn't necessarily comparing the teams, it was the amount of football they are playing, and where and when.

The overall point being, too much football 'organised' by FIFA and UEFA

Why does Christmas football only effect the English players in the PL and not the foreign ones?

To be fair Premier League players rarely tear up tournaments.

Hmmm yeah, quite a good point with a big drawback. While there are plenty of different foreign nationals playing the premier league, I think that excuse is generally rolled out comparing our fitness/fatigue levels with the rest of Europes top nations. So while there is a David Silva here, an Ozil there, the vast majority of the big nations players do play in their home leagues, and so a large portion of their squads are getting that rest. There are no England Internationals getting a winter break.

But if we did have a winter break, surely the season would finish later and the same people would complain our players aren't getting enough rest directly before tournaments?

I doubt that would be an issue. Next year the players won't be allowed to have a holiday before the tournament, they'll be off to a camp to keep their rhythm.

Part of this is addressed by Klopp's comments about the League Cup. The other part is that you've assumed two shorter periods of work with two periods of rest are the same as a longer period of work and a longer period of rest.

If EPL players get injured and fatigued in March then that will compound problems later in the year.

The thing is, so many people, who must know what they're talking about, have mentioned this. The main argument I see for keeping things as they are is a cultural one. Which is fine, but let's not pretend there's not a downside.

You don't have to give up Christmas football. The break could be in January.

Get rid of the JPT and turn the League Cup into the Football League Cup. A competition between the 72 sides in the FL. That way few internationals (barring those who play for Northern Ireland) will play in them games and it rids us of a pointless competition in the JPT.

Most first team players don't play much in the League Cup anyway.

And a lot of the time, the 'top top' players get rested from the 3rd round FA Cup game meaning they almost get a 2 week break anyway.

Spain and Italy play 38 games, doesn't do them much harm does it? and the Coppa Del Ray is played over 2 legs the whole way through.

And look where that got them. 'Even' a LVG team scored goals against them. 6 to be precise, 6!
In all seriousness don't scrap the league cup, it has given us some great moments in football.

Do you really think giving the players a couple of weeks off over Christmas would result in us matching the Germans or Spanish for talent and winning a tournament?

Don't really know if this was directed at me, the world in general or what, but offering my thoughts:

I don't think you have to match them in talent to win a tournament, and England are able to improve their performance in tournaments without actually winning them. Even so, I obviously don't believe this is the all-important factor that determines the world champions. I don't believe that such a defining variable exists. There are so many ways that England could improve their chances, and I think that this is one of them, although not the single biggest problem that needs to be fixed (number of coaches would be top of my own to-do list; I might have no football insight whatsoever but it's surely more important than the next TV deal or a shiny new training ground for the best 11 players in the country).

My belief regarding the winter break is simply that enough experts within the game have pointed to it as a factor, that it is foolish for fans to try and act like it's not the case. Although again, I don't think our game should be structured with a bi-annual tournament in mind, I just think we should make an educated choice.

Not trying to rustle any Liverpool fans, as I'm dissapointed with Klopp too. I think everyone expected him to at the very least improve this squad, but he's managed to make them look even worse?

I wouldn't want to label him as a flopp just yet, but he's heading down that path.

The side has too many high peaks and low troughs, it's finding consistency that's always been the issue for a few years now. They have had enough time now to try and get that but it doesn't look like they will ever find it and it's going to be a case of win a game, lose a game or two until the end of the season. Hoping for a good cup run now as the league won't get any better and they'll finish 10th or 11th (but still ahead of everton ) especially if the injuries are still causing concern.

It's not going to get better until next year when Klopp cam start bringing in players that will fit his system.

Hos system is having a world class squad. He won't have the pull at Liverpool.

It's ok cos my other 12 teams won. We'll probably win at least 5 titles this season and even if some of them do bad I can just distance myself and start calling them "they" like a disloyal whorebag :box:

Arsene Wenger said we'll be fine this season. Are you saying you know more about football than him? Cos that'd make you look incredibley stoopid tbh.

I wouldn't necessarily say the squad he had at Dortmund was "world class". There aren't many players in that squad who you look at and think...woah.

Klopp needs time to bring in his ideas, and that is going to take some time for the players to adjust to. The Bundesliga is a different ball game to the PL, so it's a learning curve for him too. There have been glimpses of what is to come (e.g. City away, Southampton away etc), but anyone expecting that level of performance consistently from the off was always going to be disappointed.

You cannot judge him properly until he has had a full summer to do what he wants with that squad. I imagine that Can and Firmino will both play big parts in Klopp's plans in the next couple of years, providing he doesn't get sacked before this season is out (which wouldn't surprise me at all with the way the PL is nowadays).

Klopp cam would be entertaining. I'd rather watch a man try to eat his own face than Liverpool, for sure.
