The pretence you keep trying to maintain is getting very wearisome now EG. It'd be great if they were re-settled en masse in your town, on your street. Aggggghhh Muslims refugees on my street :eyes:

:bg1:
This is weak.

Macclesfield Town/Manchester City. It's complicated.
Why do they choose the boats? Because they're looking for a better life, and the EU offers them much more than crossing the border into Algeria, Tunisia or Egypt would. Assuming they survive the journey.

Perhaps they happen to find themselves on the coast and the boats are the easiest way through. How many people are being killed travelling through Libya to make a similar journey on land (that we don't hear about because the bodies aren't washing up on European beaches)

I suspect the people charging them everything they own for a berth on the boats are hardly giving them a PowerPoint presentation on the potential dangers before getting them to sign an insurance waiver. How much information is making it back to those waiting in North Africa? Do they actually know the risk they are taking?

I'm sure they probably don't, no. I doubt crossing Libya is the issue though. Many of them are from countries much further south in the first place.

It was intended as a joke. :hb: :err:

I think you're a bit of a sycophant when it comes to EG Alty. You accuse me of calling him things that I didn't and (wilfully?) don't recognise my having a joke about him. Loosen up.

He's right too. It does always end with me making a daft joke because I can no longer read his weasel words,

I'd suspect that many of them actually are fully aware of the potential risks involved in embarking on these journeys, we have to be careful not to homogenously infantilise migrants and portray them as victims incapable of making informed decisions. You have to remember, there's a reason for this consistent flow of people, information is travelling down sub-altern channels to people who are capable of weighing up their options and are in such dire situations that the risk is outweighed by their current living conditions. Of course information can be distorted, some really will be victims of coercive tactics, some will make very informed decisions through contacts in this stream of information, it's a highly complex web that is fueling this migration.

We'd be better suited to investigating the causes for their migration than just trying cap it or legislate it. There are push and pull factors at play here, it's vital to try to alleviate pressure in their places of origin if you want to reduce the flow of people to the Mediterranean crossing.

You implied the guy was racist. For what, the 999th time? You're not joking at all.

You (poorly) attempt to out EG, among others, as a closet racist on an almost daily basis. Going way back in to the days of TFF you've been accusing people of being bigots and racists with no real evidence at all. You're the one who needs to loosen the fuck up mate. It's as if you actually want people on here to express racist views. Give it a rest for fuck sake, you're irritating as fuck.

Disappointing how few politicians and journalists are exploring the backgrounds of these migrants and establishing which countries they are coming from and what can be done about the situations in each of these countries.

To focus on what happens to them after they set sail is too late. "Let them in" is a short-sighted solution that does nothing to solve the underlying causes of this crisis.

It's not hugely surprising Beee, even the "good guys" like Human Rights Watch et al tend to examine the "end result" of migration and the problems there instead of taking a broader view and placing more emphasis on where they come from and why. It's a habit of western media to perpetuate paternalism and view these people as helpless victims of evil wider coercive factors and less as active participants in a flow of humanity with varying degrees of knowledge and suffering variable levels of coercion and maltreatment.

I was legitimately surprised when I studied the way Gulf migration was reported that things like natural disasters, civil war etc in Nepal, Indian, Sri Lanka etc are normally relegated to passing mentions and the focus is firmly on where they end up and "evil coercive recruiters" and how they're treated, it's a different flow of people but it's treated fairly similarly to this flow from the things I've read, the rhetoric is familiar. You may get separate exposes on conditions in say Sudan etc, but for some reason they don't seem to link these things together to make much more valuable observations about the wider topic of migration.

We need to tackle problems at the source as best we can to improve things at the "end".

:brill: . So you've taken my saying I hope the migrants descending on EG's street as something other than a joke..ok. I have discussions with EG, but exactly who exactly have I accused of being a bigot and racist? You say 'among others' and 'on an almost daily basis'. If that's true you'll have no problem at all in in providing examples of this right? I pulled Blue Bee up a few weeks ago for telling an openly racist joke that he admitted and other people acknowledged was racist, but what else? As for loosening up, the tenor of your post seems to indicate that is exactly what you need to do. Look forward to your examples, unless it's just you talking bollocks :P1:

It would be a big shame if this anonymous hacker group released all her private details over the internet like they have threatened to do.
