As mentioned above there was also an in depth article in the Times today on DC which someone on OVF has archived so don't need to register. Think it will be of interest to any Rovers fans on here (tends to skirt over his time at Walsall by contrast). Also I didn't realise but apparently it's not just Stockport and Wrexham paying silly money in the league below but Solihull also paying someone £3k a week. Very eye-opening for anyone who ends up down there.

From a Vale perspective we've actually cut our wage budget this season and our highest paid player is on £1850. Obviously not small money in itself but was very surprised to read that given the squad is exponentially better than last seasons. Also noted how he dismissed those sort of managers who only pursue a possession based game like Russell Martin. Rare you see a manager speak like that about others. Overall a good insight in to him as a manager.

Saw some snippets of it seems like many suspected January pushed him over the edge here.

Jordan Tunnicliffe has suffered a set back in his fitness battle. He doesn't say what's gone wrong but its bad news for Crawley.

He originally had a calf injury in our first game of the season and he hasn't played since. Meanwhile Crawley continually concede comedic goals from crosses into the box. To say we are missing him in central defence is an understatement.

Can't imagine any League Two fixtures being affected by the World Cup. Of those of us who get the odd game called off for internationals, they're usually for countries who wouldn't be qualifying or for U21 international sides who presumably won't be playing at the same time either.

Lebanon will qualify and Omar Bugiel will be called up thus affecting Sutton*

(*yes, I’m aware Lebanon qualifying is as likely as Scotland)

A quick look at the tables shows that they’re in a decent position in their qualification group….

But you need three to be gone for games to be called off - and postponements is what I meant with regards to games being affected. I can't see any of us having three players at the World Cup, even for those of us who may often have three go on international duty.

Ghana are in the WC play offs so if they make it our keeper, Wollacott will be there. If Wales make it we’ll also be without Johnny Williams. That’s assuming both are still with us.

The keeper will also miss a chunk in the New Year away at the African Cup of Nations. Even if we had a third player away we couldn’t afford to not play any games for the duration of the WC.

"In particular, it is pleasing to see the Review conclude that additional distributions from the top of the game are needed alongside appropriate cost controls to support football in this country, and we look forward to advancing discussions with the Premier League regarding a restructure of the funding model that works for the whole game.

Clearly this extends to addressing the outdated parachute payment system that currently distorts finances in the EFL and I am heartened that Tracey Crouch and her team agree these should be “reformed as part of a wider reform of distributions"

It does seem quite promising on the face of it, addressing the parachute payments and an independent regulator for a start are long overdue. This isn’t a political dig or anything as it can be applied to any governing party but there’s one thing doing these reviews and another actually implementing them particularly when the Premier League drag their feet on it (which they will) so remain to be convinced on that.

PL Clubs won't want to change the financial distribution anyway, but it's an even more difficult conversation when some of the money they do give up will end up going to Clubs like Reading, who seem to spend twice what they can afford, Derby, and whoever else.

Until the EFL are able to sort a good enough version of FFP, then it's a non-starter IMO. And ironically enough, it's the Championship, or Championship sized, Clubs who're against forms of FFP but also want redistribution. They can't have it both.

Unless that additional money is ringfenced for infrastructure work or something.

From my understanding it is about the PL clubs themselves giving money to the EFL rather than the PL?

It needs to improve, the Derby situation emphasises that.

I really dislike the parachute payments, I think its ridiculous, especially for 3 years, you end up with huge ex Prem clubs in league one getting an extra X amount of million on top to make it an even bigger task for your Port Vale, Swindon, Walsall or Exeter's to compete.

Ultimately clubs should include relegation release clauses or wage cuts for relegation from the top flight, or even a consolidation payment for the one season only to allow 12 months to clear the decks of the highest earners. Why should the Premier League pay for an EFL club to have a player on 100k a week when everyone else in the division has to finance what they can afford?

A good example was Wigan in league one when they came down middle of last decade... middling along not really pulling up tree's so spend £1 million in January on Morsy and the dutch winger they had (tore poor old Adam Yates apart) to get them over the line and back up... how was that fair on Walsall who missed out by the skin of their teeth and didn't have that extra money the parachute payment allowed Wigan to have?

Are you saying you favour a more equitable distribution of wealth.

Some of the proposals like a tax on transfers are a bit ridiculous and Chinese Communist Party-like.. and would also put the PL at a very much disadvantage to its European counterparts.

Footy is a business at the end of the day, whether we like it or not - I'm trying to think of any other situation where a business gives as much as the PL do to the EFL. Not that I think it's right with how things are now, not sure what the best solution is, or if there is even one. I think the answer will be whatever the least disliked option is going forward, because there certainly isn't going to be an option that keeps everyone happy.

Nope as mentioned above - and I wish I didn't click on 'show ignored posts' now because i'm going to end up biting to you and give you the reaction you want so this is going to be my only post to make it clear that I simply posted a link, I didn't post any supportive or opposition to it.

This is a classic of your mindset though, as if these "businesses" or competitive football would be anything without the long history of the people's game at all levels and the culture it created and to largest degree perpetuates, but once some c*** has corralled the top end off behind some fancy paperwork it's pull up the drawbridge and fuck the rest or if there's any return required you think it's an act of charity. Then at the same time they all squeal like stuck pigs and hand out the cease and desist if their "intellectual property" or "branding" aren't paid for in full.
Though sad to say they probably could go their own way now in some sort of NFL-esque perpetual spectacle.

Was simply concerned you might have developed some kind of strange traits such as decency and a social conscience. Would have had to report you to Conservative CHQ. Can't have tories showing humanity and disrespecting the great lord Mammon.

'Classic of your mindset', Jesus Christ. It's a fact. Football clubs are businesses. Like it or loathe it. I understand you're not the most intellectual person on here but football clubs have owners, those owners shouldn't have to fork out money to keep other, not just businesses, but competitors afloat. The PL already are more generous than any other league in the world when it comes to funding grass roots football. That money can then just be pocketed and not even reinvested by the lower league clubs owners. There needs to obviously be a solution, but for once take your head out of the Chinese Communist Parties ideologies and think realistically. If they give more money to lower leagues via 'transfer taxes' like that have been proposed, then they'll be less competitive in Europe, they'll earn less money and then the lower leagues will get less money. It's a tricky situation but pretending football clubs aren't businesses, and football players aren't employees, and you aren't a customer is not the solution.

The first solution I'd offer are owners being properly vetted before they're allowed to take over by an an independent panel, which seems to also be a proposal as well, which I'm all for.

It was a direct quote from a PL club owner, but you crack on hahahahah

Well in that case the PL club owner doesn't know what he's talking about.

FWIW, even though I'm a proud lefty, I much rather we* don't drag politics into every single thread that Devon Lad posts in. I mean we're not going to change his mind now are we? Just like he won't change ours.

* 'we' is everybody, those on the left side as well as those on the right side. I'm not referring to anybody in particular.
