We have been here before... Beano to Eastliegh in 2014!
Hylton was not Appleton's signing and he doesn't rate him.

Looking forward to see who Appleton brings in as a replacement.
That was a strange one - quality strikers don't come cheap and its difficult to find one and then to become established right away.

Best part of today's business is it means Calamity Cuthbert is almost certainly relegated to the bench!

What kind of striker is Hylton Oxford fans? I had it in my head he was a fairly sizeable unit but Wiki reckons only just six foot. Target man type?

No he's not really a target man, although he's good in the air. He'll be good for you if you like to pass the ball, because he can link up the play and when he gets into space he'll usually beat the defender. Our fans really took to him because he presses defenders all game as well as scoring 15 each season. Put him with another decent striker, or with an attacking midfielder just behind him and you should have a promotion standard attack.

We're expected to make our next signing this week. Not much is known about the player as of yet but Davis has implied that League One and Scottish clubs are keeping tabs on the lad but he's confident that he'll sign for us.

So naturally with Davis being hopeful, I expect this potential new signing to be tucking into a welcome meal of Haggis and Tennents over the celebratory Gresty Road Chippy supper when he finally agrees to sign for a club. Can't say I blame him either...

We've signed Liam McAlinden on a two year deal after his release from Wolves.

Anyone know anything about him?

Just look at any of the 5 names Davis tries to sign every single transfer window, it'll probably be one of them. And probably not very good at all.

But...

"Crewe Alexandra's Brad Inman says he is hoping his involvement with Australia's international squad will lead to him moving to a Championship club next season."

Good luck, Brad.

I'm sure I read on here recently that McAlinden was ok at Crawley.

Surely that's our forwards now sorted. Just to get the defence sorted out and we should be looking half decent.

I think its fair to say we're flashing the cash! These transfers sponsored by our good friends at Brentford FC and Burnley FC to the tune of £900,000 this summer for a certain Andre Gray.

The thought of Hylton and Marriott up front makes me chuckle more than it should. Hotel puns aplenty!

Desperately searching for someone with the initials IHG to complete the set.

Hylton was twice Oxford supporters' player of the season and rejected a new contract at the Us.

If I was an Oxford fan right now I wouldn't be happy!

I probably would be because they've got Kemar Roofe instead and are in League 1 but horses for courses and all that.

I think its unlikely the Roofe will still be there by August.

Think we just need 3-4 more players and then we're done - a goalkeeper certainly, right/left midfielders and possibly another forward.

Really happy with these two signings. I reckon we need a GK, a RB, CB and probably two midfielders now.

Need at least two central midfielders IMHO. Smith not good enough, Doyle not fit enough and given Jones's ultimatum probably on the way out, Lee a squad player. We have no steel or creativity in the centre really, and I can't possibly imagine us not signing at least one first XI player there as a priority. Lawless was released despite playing more games than any of the central midfielders bar Lee under Jones so surely we are in the market for an upgrade.

Are we still dragging this rubbish up?? He let Beano go because no matter how much we loved him, he wasn't ruthless enough in front of goal. We're in League One now and he's hardly setting the world alight at Eastleigh in the Conference.

Appleton played Hylton for two full seasons and offered him an improved deal for League One so he obviously did rate him. Simply, he's worth more to Luton than he is to us. We need strikers to fire us in to the Championship. Hylton is a terrific player for League Two but he'd have been back up next season, no more.

Two brilliant signings for Luton anyway. Massive statement to the rest of the division.

Not surprised we are looking at Oxford players given they were praised for their football last year and seems to be the way Jones wants to go. Like the sound of a few of the comments above from Oxford fans about Mullins being good on the ball and Hylton pressing.

As JD says, Cuthbert probably moves to the bench with Mullins coming in, unless we want to play Sheehan at left back but given he spent his loan spell at centre half unlikely.

Seem like 2 good signings, although I thought we made some good signings last summer and we saw how that went!

Also Jones basically stated outright he wanted two goalkeepers now as his original plan was for Justham to be back-up to new #1. I don't think either of the young lads are ready for that role just yet and as the emergency loan rules are changing, not a position you want to take a risk with really.

Jon Stead 'attracting interest' from Scotland apparently. I think I'd almost literally combust with joy if we got rid of him this summer.

Sheridan says he's staying, I can't wait for us to sack him in October already.

Given the emphasis Jones placed on having a natural leftie at centre back, I think that will definitely be Sheehan's primary role. On the other hand, I suspect we won't bother signing another out-and-out left back and just have Sheehan as the alternate option there, which would fit with Jones's plan to reduce squad numbers as well.

I wonder if we are still in for Rea after the Mullins signing? Probably still room if we don't sign another left back, especially as he can play defensive mid too.

Good luck, Brad.

Firstly, it can't be McAlinden whose finally gone to Exeter nor will it be Jake Cassidy whose signed an extension at Oldham. I don't think Jordy Hiwula will want to come here either. Means it'll either be the entire budget on Joe Davis or a lesser signing like Uche or Callum Kennedy.

In all seriousness though I have no clue who it could be but I bet you he doesn't sign this week.

As for Brad:      I wouldn't even want that lazy swine playing for us in League Two...

And suddenly we're back to 30 players again! With the new law professional foul laws in the penalty area, do you need two senior goalkeepers in the squad? The emergency loan loophole is being closed, but does that include goalkeepers?

Re the central midfielders - we already have 5 central midfielders in the squad + Bakinson who I'm hoping will play 10-15 games this season.

I see Sheehan playing at left back with O'Donnell on the right and Cuthbert and Mullins in the middle. That leaves Potts and Justin as fullback cover and just Frankie Musonda at CB, so I can see another CB coming in. If it was Rea, I'd be made up.

Excellent signings by Luton today, as long as Jones can create a good team spirit there they have to look good for next season.

I believe it does include keepers, yes. Don't quote me on that but I'm sure I read it somewhere.

Also, Jones's comments regarding squad size have been a bit mixed. One of his interviews implied that he meant 20 players + 2 goalkeepers. Another one implied that he meant 20 players plus the youngsters, so whether someone like Bakinson or even Musonda would count in his mind is unclear. I certainly don't think he would have been thinking of King or Gooch as part of his head-count even if they have pro contracts.

He explicitly stated that he wanted to keep Justham and still sign a new #1 and would now be adjusting his transfer plans, so however his maths are working with the smaller squad, he clearly wants two keepers in addition to the kids.

Re the central midfielders - we already have 5 central midfielders in the squad + Bakinson who I'm hoping will play 10-15 games this season.

Doyle hasn't played a game under Jones and was given an ultimatum, can't see him being around. Pelly is primarily a wide player these days (the only one we have in fact until Green recovers, probably Xmas at the earliest). Then we have Smith who clearly isn't up to Jones's style of football and was a fringe player under him last season, can't see that changing.

We play with at least three and sometimes four central midfield players under Jones (got a sneaking suspicion that the diamond will be Plan A next year). Jones's first choice centre mids were Lawless and Lee, one of whom was released. We also let McCourt go, who Jonest stated in no uncertain terms that he had planned to keep. There's no way we aren't in the market for at least one central player.

We've signed Liam McAlinden on a two year deal after his release from Wolves.

Anyone know anything about him?

He was ok with us but by the time he got here we had given up. Then, just as he got going he got injured. Didn't play again until the last two games where we were little short of awful (two 3-0 losses).

Hard to accurately judge him but I'd say a good league two striker but I can understand why Wolves released him as he is not Championship standard.

My comment about Beano was demonstrating exactly why I am not worried about Hylton going.

Beano still being in the conference and the players we replaced him with are exactly why I am not too bothered.
