You would have thought free market conservatives would be in favour of this.
Please!!!
The proposed ESL was roundly condemned by all sections of the political community from the left to the right.
There are probably more football watching supporters in the Houses of Parliament than other establishments.
And it was the pressure from the government that additionally helped change the minds of the errant SIX.
Pressure from the fans plus a proposed windfall tax did the job.

I'm in favour of them being able to join, I'm also in favour of the FA / PL Clubs / PL / Uefa / FIFA / Fans in also taking action.

Free markets, innit. And look how well it's played out - The right result in the end. The ultimate result and proving free markets work wonders.

Whereas you're in the elite super league along with the Carlisle and FGR boys.

It's good to know I'm still spoken about regularly on this site.
With the amount of absolute shite you have spouted over the years you are very hard to forget.

It has nothing to do with free markets. It is all about votes and the Red Wall. Why did BoJo respond so quickly to this, but not what was happening in Northern Ireland, for example?

You mean other than the fact he called for checks to cease immediately so the EU started legal proceedings whilst Boris also called for urgent meetings to discuss with the EU - Where breakthroughs have already been made? Just because the Guardian didn't report, you probably haven't been best kept up to date. Nothing to do with the Super League, just your distaste for Boris. Shame, polls as always show you commies up to be exactly what you are - A vocal, angry, snowflake minority. Nothing to see here, just the Conservative Prime Minister single handedly saving football. Free markets showing they work and another nail in the coffin for the left.

Deflection is always a favourite from your ilk, so I'll do it to. Get out my pub.

All fell apart very quickly, didn't it!

We all knew it anyway, but Allegri saying publicly that it can't go ahead without the English teams point it towards the obvious of them needing the PL to bring the money to prop everyone up.

Also needs ensuring that this climbdown doesn't result in the authorities forgetting what's happened and sweep it all under the carpet again. Clubs and/or individuals still need to be held to account.

Yep, absolutely nothing to do with the fact that not a single footballing personality, media personality or member of the public backed it, and nothing to do with the fact that they were threatened by all the footballing authorities - it was purely because some Eton oaf said he was unhappy about it in a bid to appear as a man of the people.

The only surprising thing about all this is that the Government wasn't taking a backhander to help them push it through - must've been why Johnson was "so opposed" to it.

Ha ha. You have completely and utterly missed the point I am making, and I suspect not deliberately. You were referring to pure economics, whereas I am suggesting that a political economy perspective is more applicable. I am giving primacy to political considerations rather than economic. The need to maintain electoral support of Red Wall seats is a clearly rational self-interest decision to explain BoJo’s motivation to act promptly in this crisis. My view is not based on any personal politics, but an understanding of political science influenced by work like that of Thomas Piketty and Simon Lee, not The Gruaniad.

You really are the Comical Ali of culture war inadequates aren't you? Government intervention shows free markets work? Shows you don't even understand the politics and economics you pretend to subscribe to.

Absolutely hilarious that little exchange there.

Someone claiming free markets work and using the example of Government involvement to "prove" said point. Talk about a self own.

I think this is a great time to reset all the leagues
1 point awarded for every season spent in the top league...Old First div
2 points awarded for each season in the Premier League
3 points for each time you have won promotion
4 points for every league title you have won
5 points if you have played in a European competition
6 points for Each Fa cup win
7 points for every ground with a capacity over 25k

Seems only fair

Bolton would be back in the top division with about 150 points
Bradford Championship about 80 points
Oldham lge 1 40 points
Tranmere lge 2 20 points
Barrow National league 10 points

Kick the likes of Salford FGR and Newport out
Reinstate Notts County

Sounds like a plan !!
Does the Anglo-Italian cup count?

We were in that shite 2 years running. :bg:

It’s not shite, I actually think a breakaway super league for 3rd and 4th tier sides across Europe would be just what the game needs to get all those 16-24 year olds interested in football again.

Who doesn’t want to watch Bari v Rochdale, Accrington Stanley v Stuttgarter Kickers or Grimsby Town v Deportivo Ibiza?

And what a wild ride it was. We jetted off and took in the sights, sounds and culture of two of Europe's most distinguished and beautiful locations. Leicester and Barnsley in back to back Septembers. We really were spoilt.
We became the first foreign team to beat Roma in Rome thanks to that.

But imagine the away days out of that. Be epic to see a competitive away game at Deportivo Ibiza wouldn’t it?!

Apparently contracts and agreements have been signed between some, if not all the ESL clubs and bankers JP Morgan. There will be some untangling and cost involved in getting out of it now. Real Madrid still want to go ahead.

We only needed a draw with Barnsley too to qualify for the away Italian games and we lost 2-1 and I remember as a kid being genuinely gutted at missing out on those. :(

Can imagine some of the PA announcers struggling a bit, ‘we’d like to welcome our visitors from Italy today, Nibionnoggiono Calcio, starting in goal no.1....’

When we moved to our current ground we had an announcer who couldn't say Matt McEntegert...he had a few attempts at butchering his surname, before announcing him as Matt.

Anglo Italian cup vale played in that quite a few times in the 90s. Lost to genoa 5 2 in a final at Wembley in 1996 think montella scored a hatrick for them they absolutely dicked us.

Next season you'll be able to challenge for a place in the Tunnocks Caramel Wafer Cup! That's honestly a real thing.

Vincenzo Montella scored but was Ruotolo who got the hatrick (Italian international!)

Think we drew with Genoa 0-0 in the group too but they had some talent and generally are Serie A so a big club. They had Van T’Schip on the bench who was a Dutch International regular. Montella who was one of the great goal scorers of the 90s in Italy.

Shame it wasn’t still on, the likes of our games away at Ancona and Cesena and Perugia are pure Ryanair £1 flight destinations these days!

Good away days they’d have been, better than Wigan in the Paint Pot you get these days!

I read that the final nail has been hammered into the ESL's coffin now that JP Morgan, the American bank and backer, has pulled out of the project.
