Having lived in Edinburgh for a while, I had a season ticket at Hearts the season when they split the ugly sisters and won the Scottish Cup beating Hibs in the semi finals I have a bit of manlove for Hartley. Hope he does really well.

Scottish lower league football can’t be that bad, we got Cadden from Morton and Hendry from Raith and both have done alright at league 2 level, Cadden especially.
Hit and miss though in general. Mainly misses for us.
We even had a full international international Derek Riordan in L2 while he was still only 29...and he was absolute bobbins.
Other shocking scots include Garry Kenneth, Martin Cameron and Scott Howie.
The only 2 decent ones we've had are still here, Coutts and Nicholson although neither came directly from Scotland.

I’d be chuffed with either of them. I said from the off I thought Delaney would get it - based on the relationship with Villa loanees.

Mason could get a few tasty Spurs loans in, too.
Yeah out of the 'candidates' I reckon they are the 2 that stick out as being exciting. Carrick as well but I don't think he'd start his managerial career this low down.

Is Mason really an exciting appointment? Spurs weren’t great under him at all. Could be another Tim Sherwood…

If I were Swindon I’d be looking at someone like Warburton rather then some ex Prem player with zero EFL knowledge.

Based on our history of managerial appointments, Macari, Hoddle, Wise/Poyet, Di Canio etc Mason is more 'exciting' than a lot on the list of usual names. As with all appointments it's a risk, see also Ben Garner;Bristol Rovers.

Notts County were hardly amazing and you appointed their manager.

I didn’t describe that as an exciting appointment either tbf, although he does at least have a decent record managing in Scandinavia. 160 games in management and a 38% win record isn’t bad I would say. Much less of a gamble then Mason or Carrick would be.

I think regardless of records all managers are pretty much a gamble to be fair. Our fanbase generally seems to react better to an 'exciting' manager than Joe Soap or El Dino Sheridan for example. I haven't done any research at all but generally it seems to be that we have our best times with an 'exciting' manager at the helm.

And you are right, you never did say your appointment was exciting, I was just getting a pointless, cheap dig in for shits and giggles.

Thing is at the end of the day, the main exciting thing is good results. Having a great playing record/big name/good contacts doesn’t really mean much if you don’t win enough games.

Seems a good character, and vaguely remember him being a bastard as a player. But the Cove job surely has no reflection of his ability - looks like they've been flashing the cash in the same way Gretna did, buying in players from the divisions above and borrowing money that they'll never be able to pay back. They were certainly big favourites every season he was at Cove, so it's hard to tell if the success was down to him, or a chimp could've done the same job.

My yardstick for Scottish football is always Jordan White. Absolutely hopeless for us in non-league, but spent most of the subsequent years in the SPL.
Everyone said the same about Challinor before he came here and that worked out. Hartley got a double promotion with Alloa on a tiny budget, Dundee the Championship title with little outlay there as well. Cove aye granted he had some coin but for me at least his record shows he doesn't need a massive budget to compete. Over 45% career win rate as well, can't help feel positive about this

We also had Gavin Reilly who came off the back of a promotion to the Prem and scored 22 goals that season. He flattered to deceive but wasn’t useless.

Thought he’d do well in L2 tbh but seemed to actually get worse?

Edit: working his way down the leagues back in Scotland now, into L1. Shame

Kenny Ronaldson was half decent in his time.

Not our manager yet but.....was previously with Wigan when they got promoted from League 1. Sounds quite moneyball really

Funny there’s no mention of him on the Wigan forum, though.

Kevin Betsy confirmed as new Crawly Town manager.

Last week I'd have been intrigued and hopeful. The way Wagmi have cooked up the announcement means it's a bit meh.

Highly rated young coach, with plenty of experience of lower league football from his time as a player with the likes of Wycombe. He definetly will be given the benefit of the doubt by me but he is coming into a role with most of his playing squad already signed. He cannot make big changes unless wagmi give him a budget.

The appointment of Dan Miccichi as assistant is interesting. Was Arsenal u18 head coach but was once manager of MK Don's for around 3 months.

No idea what he’d be like as a manager but Betsy was highly rated and a popular figure at Wycombe, for what it’s worth I imagine all our fans will be rooting for him to be a success.

His Arsenal U21s were the best juniors I've seen in the Pizza Plate.

Betsy is a coach I thought we might be looking at. It will be interesting how he does at Crawley as based on nothing at all I expect them to struggle next/this season.

I expect us to struggle most seasons based on our budget. We were told we had the second smallest last season so finishing mid table was pretty good.

New man, new style but mostly the same players means it could be tough but wagmi have said they will up the budget. It also appears wagmi are intent on using analytics as an integral part of running the team. Betsy had to sign up to that to be appointed but how much interference will there actually be and much will that affect the team he can put out?

WAGMI sound more of a nightmare each time you mention them. So glad we sent them packing

Their name just irritates me, irrationally of course. The analytics thing is interesting, that's something we are looking to do more with. I guess everyone wants to be Brentford these days!
