John Askey is flattered to be linked to the Grimsby job.

I'm surprised you don't go for Joey Barton -- Certainly fire your team up .
Him and specifically his family aren't thought of very fondly round these parts, it would be controversial to say the least...

As Boz has summarised, Adkins is here as long as he wants the job, Palios has the club up for sale and is burying his head in the sand and says we'll be fine. Hopefully Boreham Wood put a roof on the away end in time for next year...

Very uninspiring list is that.

Stick Scott Lindsey on there and it basically the same list as ours

Who do you fancy for the job? On the list I posted I think the Cowley brothers and Richardson would be the only two picks I'd be fairly happy with.

I’d go for the Cowley’s but like you am equally uninspired by everyone mentioned

A few suggesting Grimsby will go for a coach rather than a traditional manager. Personally I wouldn’t be in favour of that at League Two level but things are a changing.

Dean Holden for me

If I was Stockwood I’d be ringing Danny Cowley and asking him how much does he want.
I know our chances of getting him are about the same chance as England retaining the Cricket World Cup but if you don’t ask you don’t get.

Very surprised David Artell isn't on that list. Disappointed as well. Not because I think Artell isn't a leading candidate, but because I can't be arsed to sign up with whichever bookie that is to put some money on him.
(if he's really at 33/1 though, my laziness is being severely challenged.

Is Artell actually any good? He’s one of the main names mentioned by our fans

Took us from relegation strugglers in League Two to midtable League One with a tiny budget and got us playing some unbelievable football at times.

However, he did have some brilliant young players to work with and his final season was historically bad.

There's more good than bad and I think he'll do well in his next job if he's given time.

Being honest, I don't know. He's managed at one club, Crewe, and as par for the course it was a mixture of success and in the end failure.
I think that he's learned from the experience. managers don't always get it right first time. it's like a lot of things in life. You evaluate the things that worked. you identify the reasons for things that didn't, and you carefully choose a situation where you can succeed.
Sure, in the end, if city don't give him the job, he might have to take what he can get. maybe Grimsby will be a good match for him.
He's someone who'd want a lot of control, and build things long term. He's not lacking in self-confidence. He's a Yorkshireman. He wants the job. How many of those other names being bandied about have actually applied?

If he fails, well, he has that in common with the last 6 or 7 managers, but I think he's a solid manager. He'd fit in well with the culture. I just think it's a good match.
I won't be too upset if it's the Cowleys. They have a good record. I suppose deep down, I just think David will be more committed. He wants to build something. I want somebody who wants us.

I'm not interested in supposed quick fixes. I want a sensible long term strategy, and Artell is my guy.

I guess the bottom line is the vast majority of football managers fail. They get sacked whether it is 6 months, 1 year, 3 years, whatever. They fail.
You could pick an experience guy, a guy getting his first job, a former playing hero, someone from within. It doesn’t tend to matter. Boards believe they have the right man, but invariably it won’t work out!

Impossible task

Artell is like schrodinger's cat at this point. He's both a good and bad manager and only by getting another job will we know for certain which one he is. If he gets any of these jobs and does well, then he'll set himself up for the next 10 years with other gigs. But if he fails, he'll be like his predecessor Steve Davis and be out of EFL management for good.

He needs a job soon though, he's clearly searching for one given he's done the circuit of pundit podcasts in the last few months. Pretty soon his name will fall out of circulation.

I mean you never know but I think Grimsby be alright.

The ‘why can we not have a play-off push’ narrative from some in the summer not held up well mind.

I think so too but if the new man gets off to a hard start you can quickly get into the three manager a season relegation scenario.
We did it, Hartlepool did it last season, it's not uncommon and just sort of creeps up on you.

Got a better squad than Hartlepool looking at it, although league is definitely better this season which may offset it.

We’re not actually playing too badly and I genuinely think it just takes some confidence and more progressive tactics. I think every Grimsby fan would say the same and personally I’m not worried at all.

I’m also not too worried at present - what does concern me is the current pool of managers. I trust the board to bring in someone with the right attitude but get the feeling they’ll go with a long-term person where we might not see instant results.

I don’t think we’re fishing in the same pool as Bradford and Gills either, because whatever they offer will certainly be a better package than us.

The players we have are certainly capable, mostly better than last season, but they’ve been coached pretty horribly this so far, and the squad just seems unbalanced and really lacking in confidence.

Stockport County.
Hurst did a great job yet again at Grimsby to get them out of the NL, great Cup run last season too. But I said last week I thought they were poor. I think their squad is decent which is probably why Hurst has been given the bullet and the squad is probably In the "too good to go down" category but there aren't two basket case teams that stand out to me. I couldn't call who will go down.

Our squad is fine and has been the last two seasons, we just can never put chances away, if a new man can fix that we will finish comfortably mid table and above

That’s a fair comment re avaliable managers.

Grimsby are going to need to be smart about it.
