There's still an awful lot of work to be done. Basically were still cleaning up the mess that Fergie unfortunately left us in, but what are these surgical implements that are required?

Jones, Smalling, Evans, Raphael, Di Maria, Mata, Falcao, Fellani, Van Persie and a fair few others are teetering on the brink of the exit door.

What needs to be done in your view?

A centre back, a right back, a proper defensive midfielder (not a playmaker that can do a job there) and a striker assuming Falcao and Van Persie continue to be as poor as they have been so far this season.

Definitely a striker seeing as Van Persie's best days seem to be behind him and there's no way we will be spending 40 odd million on a dud.

A new keeper (Goatboy will likely be off to Real this summer) so basically a whole new defensive unit as there isn't a single player in the back line at the moment that is good enough. Di Maria won't be going anywhere, he just needs to be used properly. Plus so much money was paid for him there is no way he could be sold without making stupid losses. And I'm talking a record. Get rid of Falcao and Van Persie.

To properly challenge for the title United need around 5-6 players.

Why are people so convinced De Gea is going to Madrid?

It's actually seeming more likely all the time that Real are happy to persist with Casillas and make a move for De Gea in a later window. I'm sure he'll end up there but the longer we keep him the better, obviously.

One of the best keepers in the world. He's Spanish and a local lad. Less than 18 months remaining on his contact. And Real's current number one is nearing the end of his career.

Basically he's the perfect replacement for the biggest club in the world and if he doesn't sign on United's dotted line before closed season, Real will know why and send in a decent offer. And with 12 months remaining on his contact by then United will either have to sell or lose him for fuck all.

And all the above isn't even talking about the fact United aren't exactly setting the world alight at the moment and likely won't be for the near future.

United could always do a Rooney though and offer ridiculous wages and make him the best paid keeper in the world. Could work.

He's our best player and should be paid accordingly. I don't agree with the money players are on but give him whatever it takes. Every top club needs a very good keeper. We see it time and time again. We can pay him whatever Real could.

And if his only consideration was money that might be enough. But few players turn down the chance to play for the likes of Real and Barcelona, especially if they're pretty much guaranteed a first team spot for years if they keep up their form.

They should buy Krul as a replacement if he does go. A clear, instant improvement on Goatboy (I do like that one, Paggers) and some money in the bank for Mr. 3 Months to piss up the wall at a later date.

LVG should move heaven and earth to get DDG signed up on a long term contract. If they can get back into the top four and bring in a couple of top quality defenders in the summer it might be enough to convince the player that his ambitions can be fulfilled at Old Trafford.

United already have De Gea's replacement should he leave for Madrid in Valdes. Before he chose to opt out of his Barcelona contract (seems as though some players don't want to play for Real Madrid or Barcelona), he had a couple of very good seasons for them. Still has three or four seasons left in the tank, so goalkeeper is not a priority.

I think United will re-sign De Gea anyway, not a foregone conclusion at all, he's becoming a cult hero. Even if it's just a contract extension to bump his price up in a later window (ala Bale), I think it will happen.

United need a world class centre back, a right back, a destroyer and a quick centre forward. More than that though, they need to change formation - ideally 4-3-3 to unlock Di Maria's potential. In which case they would need new wing forwards instead of a centre forward (Rooney).

I can't see United forcing him to resign. It's effectively giving him away for nothing.

Seen today in L'equipe I think it was that Manchester United remain interested in Laurent Blanc!
Getting on a bit, but still better than Smalling! :).
If De Gea does go, wonder if they would make a move for Anthony Lopes.

As for a keeper they have Valdes who is excellent, though we'll have to see if he's the keeper he once was. I can easily see them getting rid of Van Persie and Falcao though so that means they might need two strikers also.

I would say in all serious that three defenders are needed along with a defensive midfielder and two strikers. The most important change should be the manager, who is awful.

Rooney and DDG have been head and shoulders above the rest all season.

I would clear out
Valencia
RVP
Falcao
Rafael
Evans
Mata.

Massive doubts on the rest. I don't think any of the summer signings have done well consistently. If someone offers anywhere near £50m for Di Maria, they should except and get in Bale.

for me its the midfield where they look weakest. RVP, Rooney and Falcao will score goals if theres a midfield who can control the tempo of the game and find them in the box. Every other team has someone who can play in central midfield and dictate the tempo, but there's nobody of that ilk at united.

I reckon they've got the builders, just lacking an architect. It just looks like LvG has slung them on the pitch and told them not to lose.

Spending more money won't fix the problem.

If it's a case of an overhaul in terms of personnel then next season will be another where they will do well to challenge. Badly need pace in forward areas though.

A squad that has already just had £150M spent on it, still needs 6 new players at least - how much is that going to cost? Another 200m? How much can be gained from selling the current dross to offset the outlay? Not a lot I'd imagine.

And many of the new players who cost that 150m have gone backwards so far in their time at United.

So then you get in loads of new players, it needs time to settle down and for the manager (be it LVG or someone else) to sort out a consistent team, so there's still no guarantee of any title challenge. It's a mess.

I think it's safe to say United are out of the running for the title, and on that bases I've just done a cursory check and I think this will be the first time United will have gone two full campaigns without any form of trophy since 1988-1989. Perhaps someone else can confirm this.
