Don't listen to DSL, Hurst is an excellent manager who more than deserves the step up. We definitely wouldn't stand in his way if he wanted to move on.

Like Jacob I think it will be someone who's already at a club. Trew just seems to like throwing money at us this season. Wilder will be up there I am sure

God no. Nowhere near a Football League Manager.
On the contrary, 3 back to back top 5 Conference finishes with the most recent leading to a playoff final penalty shootout defeat suggest he's about as close to being a Football League manager as possible without actually being one.

Yeah I expect Wilder is on his way to Notts County as we speak!

That's Luton, Swindon, Cambridge, Chesterfield and probably a couple of others Chris Wilder has been favourite for.

The footballing world needs to realise that we are no longer in financial strife and Chris Wilders best mate has just bought him a football club!

True but his failure to get Grimsby promoted from none of those play offs is criminal. Ok Granted one was on penalties and unfortunate but still. Certainly think Notts can do a lot better than him.

I think if Hurst deserves a job in the FL it should be with Grimsby if he gets them up. Certainly at a smaller League 2 club then Notts anyways.

Rumours down here are that Sheridan is closer than ever to joining you guys. Not sure what to believe now to be honest, just want you to appoint someone so we know if we need a new manager or not :D

Looks like Hurst. Suddenly dropped in as favourite, didn't attend his media stuff today.

I'd be amazed if Hurst went now.

Having said that, I wonder which set of fans would be happier at the move?!

Hurst? Very very meh. No great achievement in getting Grimsby to the top six of that league, they should have got promoted long before now.

Wilder would be great, he's served his apprenticeship at Oxford and Northampton, now time to show he can cut it at a bigger club like Notts.

The first time round in the playoffs, I just don't think we were good enough. Newport beat us fair and square were the better team. The second time, we were a bit robbed at Gateshead by a ridiculous red card with the tie in the balance. A parallel to be drawn between the Grimsby job and the Notts County job is that both clubs are among the biggest clubs in their respective divisions. This experience Hurst has gained over his time with us is something that would perhaps put him ahead of someone like Cowley, who's brief at the moment ensures that anything more than a lower midtable finish earns him a pat on the back. An upper midtable finish and he is the proud recipient of lavish praise. Hurst is barely ever given any credit from both Grimsby fans and the rest of the Conference supporters, despite consistently grinding out results for consecutive seasons now.

I do agree, however, that Hurst should earn his chance to manage a Football League side by taking us up. If only because he came so frustratingly close last season and I have grown quite fond of him.

Wouldn't get too excited....

Apparently he had 2 interviews for the Cambridge job, 2 interviews for the Luton job....

I'm not saying he's going to get the job, The NEP reporter is often right and has said he's having an interview

Dunno what to make of Hurst. If he was appointed, I'm not sure he's what we need which is someone to pick us up and get us challenging for a late play off push

This is basically why i'd quite like Hurst. It shouldn't be underestimated how difficult it is to keep a side at the top of a league season after season, even as one of the biggest clubs/with the biggest budget. We've tried plenty of managers who've had a short term impact (Ince, Allen, Curle, Derry...) but failed to sustain it, someone who has proven himself able to consistently get a team into a play-off position in a similar situation to ours, just a division lower, would be a shrewd appointment IMO. If he can replicate what he's done at Grimsby here, he's got double the number of promotion spots to aim at.

I dunno if that is what we need, really. We've had enough impact managers who've fizzled out, what we need is someone who can build a successful team without going on the sort of terrible run of form that inevitably gets you sacked at Notts.

IMO Hurst getting Grimsby in the Play offs year after year is a great achievement. It is a tough tough league the Conference. A lot of Ex Football league sides who are all expected to challenge and then the semi pro sides who are getting better each year and all go away to places like Grimsby and play for 0-0. Then you have the bankrolled Crawley's, Fleetwood's, Eastliegh's and FGR who don't make life easy for anyone.

Gary Mills got a team promoted from the Conference therefore I refuse to believe it's a difficult achievement.

We just need someone who is solid and not offensive or mental basically with enough experience to know how to grind it out when things get a little dicey. Look at our last few managers.

Moniz - Gung ho foreigner, couldn't adapt
Derry - Rookie, no experience, completely lost the plot last January when trying to turn form around
Kiwomya - Rookie, never really showed the ability to build a squad capable of competing. More of a coach
Curle - polarising character, only really had one way of playing and when it stopped working he didn't have a clue
Allen - Do I really need to say why this one didn't work out...
Ince - Same as above. A manager who routinely pushes training back 4 hours when the players are at the ground because he's playing golf...won't be a success.
Short - Rookie, probably the only one in my book that was sacked too soon.
Cotterill - Big Success obviously.

So since Cotterill (who is clearly the odd one out of the lot) we've just had a succession of either fairly volatile characters who would never last long-term or rookie managers who started off fairly well then were gone after a run of bad results they couldn't stop.

If Hurst is a fairly professional consistent fella who can steer the ship responsibly then I'll be more than happy. The same goes for Sheridan who I think fits the same criteria.

Isn't Sheridan known for doing much of the same as what you discribed with Ince, just replacing the golf course with a boozer?

He was. Seems to have sorted himself out at Plymouth and Newport, though.

Mark Cooper was at our game last Saturday again for some reason. Anyone know if he is doing some scouting for someone? He was here a few weeks back aswell.

Yeah, he is. That's why he was at our game, assume he must be doing East Mids ones for somebody.

To be completely fair as I haven't ever really been a big fan of Hurst, what he excells at is building a good team with a positive atmosphere, one that will work for each other through thick and thin. He's never proved himself as a mastermind of tactics and that's why I don't think he'll ever get us promoted, the league is just too tough. However if he can do what he's done here in League 2 which is less harsh in terms of promotional structure, he may find success.

Grimsby also say that they haven't been approached. Common theme emerging here!
