Slightly surprised they've put Tranmere slight favorites over Grimsby, just because by the looks of it their squad is having some major surgery. Grimsby seem to be keeping most of their squad together so with a couple of additions and the experience they have of this league they should be strong. I think top 5 will come from those top 6/7 clubs on the odds list see if Woking can keep it up and not run out of steam this year.
Early punt on top 5 would be: Grimsby, Eastleigh, Forest Green, Tranmere, Wrexham.

At the bottom of the league i think anyone from Torquay down is vulnerable, (although Altrincham upset the odds last year with a good season). Torquay and Kidderminster will most likely be on reduced budgets. Braintree are under a different manager and must have a smallish budget. Welling come under the same 'perennial survivors' tag as Southport. While Boreham Wood and Guiseley are completely unknown quantities at this level.
Sticking my neck out again for relegation id say: Braintree, Guiseley, Welling and Boreham Wood.

Agree with your top 5 and without wanting to sound over-confident, I'm kinda expecting us to run away with it tbh and that's before we've even signed any strikers. It couldn't be much of an easier job for Hurst. I think our only real threat will be Eastleigh.

We had a rebuild job too remember. In no particular order, the top 4 is bang on for me.

I have a feeling Cheltenham may be a Torquay remake in terms of where they finish. Hopefully Grimsby go up as champions Torquay in the playoffs. Although I feel Torquay are here for the long haul Im afraid

Barrow need to massively improve if they're to get in the play offs, they'll easily stay up but on what I saw last season I don't think they'll get in the play offs.

To be fair it is still May and the play-off final was only two weeks ago. One thing I will say and will predict from this moment in time is that we will have the best defensive record in the league next season.

Is that the same defence that conceded 6 against us last season! :emb:

Lincoln, Halifax, Dover and Bromley are a bit short.

Chester will finish higher than 16th.

Yes, we conceded 3 goals twice last season in the league which shows how well you did in the games against us. The 800 Imps must have gone home very happy that day. And the sell out away end of 1800 went home very upset from Sincil Bank in September. Have you heard any thing else on Miller?

I guess these odds in particular are a combination of likely outcome with numbers of fans likely to feel bullish enough to put their hands in their pockets and make a bet. I'm not sure how big the market is outside the fan base.

Yes I know, I was having a friendly dig, I do expect you to have one of the best defences again next season. Doubt we will get maximum pts against you again, but was nice while it lasted! Miller probably won't sign here, not sure if he has been offered anything up the A46 with you, but he does live in Scunthorpe and has a business outside of football so it wouldn't be beyond the realms of possibility to be a Mariner next season. Whoever gets him will have a very good defender on their books.

Reading a couple of our boards it seems we may have a bit of extra investment coming in, nothing concrete yet and only rumour, but it would be nice if we could compete a little more with the sides that splash a bit more cash than we normally can afford. I would reckon your budget was maybe 2-3 times ours last season.

Continuity, to a certain extent, can make a difference, so I expect the teams with the more settled squads to start with a slight advantage. On that basis I expect the likes of Grimsby, Eastleigh and ourselves to start stronger then teams like Tranmere, Wrexham, Cheltenham and Barrow, all of whom are going through a rebuild and might take longer to gel.

Grimsby should be favourites imo, they know what it takes to win the league and have a strong core retained from last seasons near miss. Hurst seemed to be finally getting to grips with what's needed to consistently beat the lesser sides in the second half of the season, and if they add a decent striker or two they'll be tough to stop.

Tranmere and Wrexham will both be strong, they've made some good signings and have managers in place who know this division very well. They might drop more early points though, which like Bristol Rovers last season could cost them the title. I think they'll both make top 5, along with Eastleigh and hopefully us, although I expect Cheltenham with Gary Johnson at the helm to be strong play-off contenders as well.

Where can Miller play and where is he best suited?

I would doubt our budget would have been double yours last season. I would have a total guess at our budget being around 700k. Although hasn't Moyses put a load of his own money in this season? The fact league a few leagues players have rejected there contract at Mansfield and come to join you suggests that your budget will be only slightly smaller than ours which will make sense really as our average attendance is 1000 bigger than yours.

According to the manager's son, it wasn't Miller who Hurst was showing around.

As for Moyses, he put £100k into the youth system on relegation when all the grants stopped, which kept it going until the fundraising got into full swing (it's now funds itself) and put in a one-off £75k to get onto the Board a couple of years ago. There's not been anything significant.

Miller is versatile, can play RB or CB. He isn't the biggest but he is good in the air, reads the game well, reasonable pace and can score a goal or two. I honestly believe he is one of the best defenders in this league, just hope he stays with us but doubt it.

We shall have to agree to disagree on the budgets. I believe Moyses is not taking a wage, he has made a decent living outside of football so his salary looks like it's gone into the playing budget. I don't think the fact that Mansfield offered players, possibly deemed slightly surplus to requirements, a contract has got much to do with what we have offered. I think it's More down to how long we have offered for security for those players and their families. Anyway the budget is/was supposedly going to be similar this season to last but if this outside investment happens, that may well all change of course depending on any amounts. Funnily enough this investment rumour was mentioned on the Fishy a couple of weeks ago.

The investment thing, hmmm.
I put a bit ago maybe on here not sure that the people involved with NFU may turn up at Lincoln, pure hunch, if people have put 2 and 2 together then so be it.
Re Miller is a good player at this level but is a bit injury prone and was part of defence that leaked 71 goals last season.

I was kidding with Macc as good value, certainly don't expect them to trouble the top 5 this year, though I would be more than pleased if they do. As for the rest, the only two that I think represent good value are Wrexham at 12/1 and Woking at 16/1. However, even though I'm tipping Grimsby for the title, IMO, this year looks extremely hard to predict, and whoever correctly predicts the title winners is either a genius or a very lucky guy.

I think the hunch from some people about NFU is quite strong in some instances, and in some it seems more than a hunch from several normally reliable sources. Allegedly these aren't the only potential investments/investors though but as always in the world of rumour, I will only really believe it when I see it down in black and white (much rather it was red and white though!)

I will welcome their cash IF they appear but the way Allams have carried on at Hull and NFU does make you wonder how long they would stick around when things dont as they want.
Our odds of 20/1 is that to go up or down??????

Confidence is high at Whaddon Road, which considering last season, is not something I truly expected.

Minimum expectation this season is the playoffs, and that's what the fans who are buying the season tickets at the same prices are looking for.

There are some on the boards that do think the Allams are going to be involved as well as this Clive Nates chap (Toffee Imp), whether that's because they just hope it's true or know more than they are allowed to officially say, I have no idea!

100-1 as an unknown entity and written off by several posters already; whatever happens, it'll be an experience for the mighty Wood!

Looking forward to mixing it with some of the 'bigger' c!ubs, I'm sure we'll give a good account of ourselves.

Given we only have a 2-a-side team (one of whom is injured) I think 33-1 is a little optimistic for us at the moment

Seriously though, looking at those odds the bookmakers are expecting us to be in midtable come next April, which personally I wouldn't disagree with, although I hope we will be closer to the playoffs than 13th.

Of the other odds I think they are pretty much as expected based on last season and managerial/player signings so far. That said, I personally expect Dover (and to a lesser extent Woking) to slip back next season.

In no way are we title favourites. We appear to be putting together a decent side for this level but A) it isn't finished and B) they all have to gel together. We have no idea how long that will take, whilst sides like Wrexham and Grimsby seem to have the basis of solid sides to build upon already. Throw in Cheltenham who have a very good manager and the sides who throw money at it (FGR, Eastleigh, Barrow?) and the promotion race is pretty tight looking at this stage. Grimsby will win the league IMO, but we could give them a run should it click quickly (and that isn't guaranteed). For me, at this early stage I'd go
Grimsby
------------
Wrexham
Tranmere
Cheltenham
Eastleigh
-------------
