according to our AGM this weekend, our first team costs are going to be £969k this season, down from approx £1.25m the season before

We believe that this is not exclusively for wages, it also includes travel and other costs associated with the team

Tough to compete on anything at this level below £1m unless you have a unreal season like Macc did.

Still think this should be a proportional percentage of overall turnover.

Would Barrow have also been under £1m?

Depends what's counted. The salary cap seems to include all bonuses, agent fees etc. As a playing budget, all we know is that the chairman reckons it was about the 10th biggest budget last season.

No real high earners, very small squad (no reserves team or 1st year pros etc), so probably safe to assume it came in under a million.

If you're including management etc, well Evatt was on bigger wages than any of the players...

Yeah similar discussions going on with our fans; don't see the point of arbitrarily hampering larger clubs who can sustainably spend over the cap, and does nothing to stop the North Ferriby/Fyldes of this world from spending well over what they can naturally afford

average wage was £700-750/week, 20-22 players and 42 or 44 week contracts. so taking the bigger figure on each works out at about £726,000 plus bonuses etc

I think a lot of Chairman have said SCMP isn't fit for purpose anymore. It did a job to a point but it's far too flimsy, nor is it monitored correctly and has too many loopholes.

That said, I do agree about restricting those who can afford it. It's a particularly problem in L1 because the difference between the smaller and bigger clubs is so massive.

There's a good, clear breakdown of the EFL one here and how it'll work. Any fines incurred by clubs, for example, are now split between the rest of the division.

That was also a point I made one of the another forums, it'll be interesting to see what happens in two or three years because when all the old contracts have expired and gone through the system, we could have a situation where your smaller clubs, I'm going to go to two extremes here but Accrington may only be £700k off Sunderland's budget. It's unlikely they'll do it because they're not that sort of Club, but £700k is a 'small' gamble to get yourselves on an even keel with Sunderland with the £8m TV deal of the Championship on offer, especially if you have absolute trust in your manager at they do with Coleman.

The trouble is if you base the cap on turnover, it won't stop little pipsqueak made up clubs spending massively as their wealthy owners inject their cash into the turnover.

It needs to be a simple and straightforward and although it may slightly hamper the biggest clubs, it also takes away the point of buying a village club and throwing all of your money at it for the next wealthy owner - if you can only throw a finite amount at it, that won't guarantee winning the NL.

If they realise that they can't outspend Stockport and other proper clubs, then there is no point to it all, and hopefully all of these clubs will fuck off.

If you're a player and Chudleigh-cum-Chuddington On Thames Railway Athletic AFC (Est. 2013) and Stockport County are both fighting to sign you, it's pretty obvious who you're gonna sign for if both are offering the same money.

How many clubs in this league can afford a 900k or more budget anyway, without a financial backer? 5 or 6?

It also encourages these bigger teams to spend on their academy and bring through some homegrown players - got to be a good thing in the long run.

Important thing is it'd be guaranteed income, not loans. And it's debts like that which've caused the downfall of clubs like mine and (presumably, since I'm not an expert on Darlo) yours. Didn't MacAnthony have to sponsor Posh in order to put the extra money in he wanted, 'cos of FL turnover rules?

He did initially but that loophole got closed years ago I think, and sponsorship's are made sure they're at a market rate now.

It was also something Piley did at Fleetwood by renting out the office space at their Stadium.

Any news on this?

Thought fans would be a bit more enthused about this but judging by the thread maybe not!
