Anyone thinking of getting one of these? I tried one at work on Friday and while I did like the novelty there were a few things that detracted.

It was a very emersive experience which was great, can imagine a Star Wars or doom style game being incredible, but I found it so uncomfortable to wear. It really dug into my eyes, and I had to hold it away from them. It got so uncomfortable I just gave up

The other aspect was that I felt sick. The movement created was so realistic I felt I was moving but my brain was aware I wasn't. Like car sickness but worse

Not sure I'd bother considering it's gonna be at least £500 on my initial experience

Virtual Reality is the next big thing for technology, not tried one myself but I've heard they are pretty incredible. I imagine if you wait a few more months there will be competition to match the Oculus.

Not convinced this isn't going to be a novelty that everyone is tired of in a couple of years.

I got myself a Samsung Gear VR a month or so back and it really has raised my hopes and expectations of what VR can bring to gaming. Like, I expected it to be pretty cool... but it really is the most mindblowingly awesome experience I can remember having in recent years with a piece of tech.

My main issues are that A) I don't own a controller and B) There's not really any great games available on the Oculus Store for the Galaxy Gear VR... but with the rift it's going to instantly resolve both of those problems. I think for example, that Half Life 2 will be playable from launch. That sounds special... and I don't think we'll really know how special it'll be until we get a chance to play it. VR is hard to hype up for people until they experience it for themselves... and more often than not, when they finally do check it out, they're utterly blown away.

The big question of whether it'll be a novelty or not...? It'll depend on how much backing it gets, I reckon. If people continue to support it and give us stuff worth playing on it (and better yet, great stuff that can only be played via VR), it'll change gaming forever. If it's just treated as a gimmick and the odd game supports it... well, it'll be no bigger than 3D. Which is still just something cool, but it never transformed things the way we were told it would. Don't get me wrong, VR is a large step ahead of 3D, they're barely even comparable. But yeah, time will tell.

VR should do very well because they can rerelease a shitload of games that can be modded for the VR experience and basically profit from the inital exctiement without having to develop entirely new games for it. Any FPS or games like Skyrim would feel pretty incredible. Especially with something like the Virtuix omni:

Mate of mine is making VR games. He used to work at Rockstar back in the day, and more recently Activision. Coulda kept taking a steady paycheck from a big developer like them I guess but chose to move into the VR space and started up his own studio. He's really excited about what's gonna be possible.

Get Viral, Oaf - that's one him and his team did. I'm just plugging a mate's work here really.

That's all I've got.

Not having a dig at Sony here but OR is much more high end than Sony's VR.
Also didn't look too good at their last event presentation.

Nintendo did this ages ago with the Virtual Boy and now everyone is copying them.

I think there's a big difference really. The fact that Virtual reality is active rather than passive in your interaction with it I think makes a big difference (there's probably a better way to word that). When it comes to films you can watch a film in 3D or as standard, for the most part it won't affect your enjoyment and the sense of immersion is largely the same. If games like I mentioned like Skyfall or FPS shooters are adapted for it and that's the only route people go down, then it may not last. However it will only take 1 exclusive title that utilises the tech in a way that playing a console or PC can't replicate to get great reviews, then the thing could skyrocket.
It's not inconceivable that it could get by with 1 or 2 titles full stop if said games/experiences were good enough. Imagine if an MMO like Warcraft were to be made for it were you were the character in a massive online world populated by other players doing all the shit people do in WoW now, but obviously with that additional sense of immersion.
I've seen videos of old people who play their grandsons Assasins creed game simply so they can look around Venice because the graphics are so good. In a VR world you open that up a step further where (some) people wouldn't even go on fucking holiday, they'd just whack their headset on and wahey, I'm in Burundi!

I got a VR headset with my S7 Edge. It works quite well, especially considering it's all done by the phone. All this VR stuff is a bit of fun for me, and not something to be taken too seriously at this stage.
